African American actor, singer, composer and song lyricist.
Got his start in show business as a child in a traveling stage production of "Uncle Tom's Cabin".
Born in the "Shake Rag" neighborhood of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Wrote the infamous song "All Coons Look Alike To Me" for the stage show "The Widow Jones" in 1896. This is the play that May Irwin and 'John C. Rice' are reenacting in The Kiss (1896). The song started a "coon song" craze in America which lasted roughly a decade and boosted the careers of both Hogan and Irwin.
