The Gilgo-Beach murder case suspect, Rex Heuermann, 60, was charged with a fourth killing this week, after being charged with three first-degree murder counts in the killings of escorts Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, and Megan Waterman in July 2023. This week, he pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder charge of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who was reported missing in 2007.
In attendance at the hearing were Heuermann’s ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, and 26-year-old daughter, Victoria, whose trash found on the Long Island Rail Road by undercover detectives helped tie Heuermann to Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
Detectives collected DNA samples from a discarded drink from Heuermann’s daughter, along with various samples from Ellerup, and connected the DNA to a hair found wrapped in the belt buckle used to restrain Brainard-Barnes. They also used an old pizza box collected from the suspect’s home to connect the link to DNA evidence found at the crime scene.

Suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann had some surprising acquaintances. It turns out that actor Billy Baldwin, also known as William Baldwin, went to high school with him.
Billy, the second youngest of the four Baldwin brothers, got on Twitter the morning of Heuermann’s arrest to share that he went to the same high school as the then-suspected Gilgo Beach murderer.
“Woke up this morning to learn that the Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect was my high school classmate Rex Heuermann,” Billy wrote.
He then wrote the name of the high school they attended together, Berner High School in Massapequa, New York, and the year they graduated in 1981.
“Married, two kids, architect. ‘Average guy…quiet, family man.’ Mind-boggling…Massapequa is in shock,” Billy added. “23andMe strikes again???”
Billy was born and raised in Massapequa, as were his other siblings, excluding Alec, who was born in Amityville. All Baldwin brothers, however,...

Officials are currently investigating the theory that Rex Heuermann killed his victims at his home in Long Island.
They believe that Heuermann lured his victims to his house while his family went out of town. Being able to kill his victims at his home gave him the advantage of having the necessary supplies on hand, which includes burlap bags and the tape that was found at the scene of the crime. This is why the police are combing through his house, in hopes that they will find more evidence that are connected to the women.
Despite Heuermann only being arrested two weeks ago at his office in Manhattan, officials have been looking into him since the spring. He has pleaded not guilty to the three homicides of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy and Amber Lynn Costello.

Police believe that Rex Heuermann, the main suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders, kept trophies from all his victims.
They are hoping that they will be able to locate these trophies in his house and believe that he may have done this on purpose or even unconsciously kept them. This is a strong possibility as serial killers typically keep some kind of trophy whether it be a piece of jewelry or clothing from their victims.
The investigation is currently ongoing and authorities are gathering and analyzing digital and trace evidence.
His house was initially searched after he was arrested and a search warrant was obtained. While they examined his house, over 200 guns and a child-sized doll that he kept in a wooden and glass case were found. In addition to this, Heuermann had two storage units and a Chevy Avalanche, which are all in the process of being examined for evidence.

On Friday morning, news broke that a suspect had finally been placed in police custody for the infamous Lisk murders, the deaths of four sex workers whose remains had been found in burlap sacks on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach more than a decade ago. After 11 victims’ bodies have been found over a decade ago on Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York, Rex Heuermann has been arrested by police.
Investigators have been trying to solve the murders of nine women, one man and a toddler, but it seemed, they did not have much luck until recently.
Officials were unsure whether they were dealing with one serial killer or multiple people who may have acted together. On Thursday, a break in the case was finally made, and Heuermann was taken into police custody.
Through a bail application, it was found that Heuermann had already been charged with three killings and is being suspected in a fourth. He was arraigned on Friday and has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. He has been ordered to be held with bail.
Heuermann is an architect in Nassau County in Long Island and has resided there for most of his life.

Updated Throughout: Law enforcement officials and investigators used cell phone data, DNA evidence and computer search histories to zero in on the suspect in the Long Island serial killer case, explained Ray Tierney, Suffolk County, New York, District Attorney, in a press briefing this afternoon.
Among other bits of evidence presented to a grand jury since the formation of an investigative task force last year were hairs found on the bodies of at least three victims, hairs that provided DNA that matched DNA found on a pizza crust discarded by suspect Rex Heuermann.
Tierney also said that Heuermann had been linked to various “burner” cell phones – a different phone allegedly used to contact each victim and then discarded after the murder – and that cell phone tower data linked locations frequented by Heuermann – his Massapequa Park home, his Midtown Manhattan office – to calls made to the victims.

Based on the unsolved Long Island serial killer case, Lost Girls heartbreakingly follows the true story of how Mari Gilbert (Amy Ryan) searched for her missing daughter, Shannan, in 2010 and how this disappearance impacted her other daughters (Oona Laurence and Thomasin McKenzie). Still, Shannan's death isn't the only one that looms over this tragic case. We learn about other victims, too, many of whom were female sex workers. The Netflix biopic ends not long after the discovery of Shannan's body. Authorities ultimately ruled Shannan's death accidental, but Mari maintained that Shannan was murdered. As the murderer's identity and motives remain unknown, we don't know for sure how many people he killed. However, chances are that the person, long dubbed the Long Island serial killer, murdered between 10 to 16 victims.
