Sam Avery is a filmmaker and educator based in central New York state. In 2013, Sam became a Professor of film and media studies at the State University of New York, College at Cortland where he teaches courses in Advanced Film, Advanced Documentary, Studio Television Production and Screenwriting. Sam is also the Executive / Artist Director and founder of the Blackbird Film Festival, an international film and arts festival based in Cortland, NY that screens over 120 films each season from around the world. Sam received his MFA from the University at Buffalo where he worked closely with International Award Winning ethnographic filmmaker, Sarah Elder.
