Us Briefs: Open Road snaps up animation 'Spark'

The distributor has acquired Us rights to the animation Spark, which Double Dutch International represents for sales at the Afm outside the Us with the exception of China and South Korea.

Hilary Swank, Susan Sarandon, Patrick Stewart, Jessica Biel and newcomer Jace Norman star in the ToonBox Entertainment, Redrover Co, Shanghai Hoongman Technology Co, and Gulfstream Pictures.

Open Road Films plans an April 14, 2017, theatrical release on the space adventure inspired by the 16th century Chinese novel Journey To The West. Canadian Aaron Woodley directed.

Hoe Jin Ha, Hong Kim, Jay Hj Ahn and Daniel Woo served as executive producers alongside Gulfstream PicturesMike Karz and Bill Bindley.

Covert Media is fully financing, producing and will handle worldwide sales on Ya adaptation Need. Jackie Chan Joins ‘The Nut Job 2’
Jackie Chan has joined the voice cast of “The Nut Job 2” with Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl and Maya Rudolph.

The animated film is directed by Cal Brunker and written by Scott Bindley, Bob Barlen and Brunker. “The Nut Job 2” will be released in theaters by Open Road Films on May 19, 2017.

The original “Nut Job” surpassed $120 million at the global box office in 2014.

The Nut Job 2” follows the adventures of Surly Squirrel when the evil mayor of Oakton decides to bulldoze Liberty Park and build a dangerous amusement park in its place. Chan will voice Mr. Feng, the highly territorial leader of a gang of city mice.

Chan has been featured in all three “Kung Fu Panda” films as well as the Cantonese and Mandarin editions of Disney’s “Mulan” and in his own animated series, “Jackie Chan Adventures.”

Will Arnett’s ‘Nut Job 2’ Gets Release Date
Open Road Films has set May 19, 2017, as the U.S. release date for its animated comedy “The Nut Job 2.”

The studio noted that the 2014 original film achieved the biggest box office opening ever for an independent, animated film and surpassed $120 million at the global box office.

Returning voice cast includes Will Arnett (Surly), Katherine Heigl (Andy), Maya Rudolph (Precious the Dog), Gabriel Iglesias (Jimmy) and Jeff Dunham (Mole).

The sequel takes audiences back to the town of Oakton, where the evil mayor decides to bulldoze Liberty Park and build a dangerous amusement park in its place. Surly Squirrel and his ragtag group of animal friends band together to save their home, defeat the mayor and take back the park.

Open Road had announced in 2014 that it would open “The Nut Job 2” on Jan. 15, 2016, but pulled it off the schedule several months later.

Korea Claims Credit for $45 Million ‘Nut Job’
Hong Kong – The South Korean government is claiming a major share of the credit for Open Road Films’ “The Nut Job,” an animated movie set to open on some 3,000 North American screens next month (Jan. 17, 2014).

The film is co-produced by Toronto, Canada-based ToonBox Entertainment with finance from Korean visual effects turned production company Redrover.

The action-comedy is directed by Peter Lepeniotis as a derivative of the short comedy “Surly Squirrel” he directed in 2005. The feature was co-written with veteran Disney animation screenwriter Lorne Cameron (“Over the Hedge”).

With a voice cast that includes Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigel, Will Arnett and Brendan Fraser, the film is set in the late 1950s in fictional Oakton and follows the travails of Surly, a mischievous squirrel, and his rat friend Buddy, who plan a nut store heist of outrageous proportions and find themselves embroiled far greater complications.

Open Road Films has acquired all U.S. distribution rights to the 3D animated comedy “The Nut Job” and set a Jan. 17, 2014 as the release date.

The project is a collaboration between ToonBox Entertainment, Redrover Co., Ltd. and Gulfstream Pictures. Producers are Graham Moloy and Wk Jung; exec producers are Mike Karz and Bill Bindley of Gulfstream Pictures, Jay Ahn, Daniel Woo, Hong Kim and Tom Yoon.

Characters in the toon are voiced by Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl, Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Stephen Lang, Sarah Gadon and Jeff Dunham. Peter Lepeniotis directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Lorne Cameron.

Story centers on a mischievous squirrel (voiced by Arnett) and his rat friend who plan a nut store heist and unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a much more complicated adventure.

The film is based on Lepeniotis’ 2005 short film “Surly Squirrel.”
