The Real Reason Meg Ryan Didn't Return For "Top Gun: Maverick"

The Real Reason Meg Ryan Didn't Return For
"Top Gun: Maverick" leans on nostalgia for the original '80s action fave, writing a new chapter of the high-flying story while also bringing back some of the stars of the original movie, like Tom Cruise in the title role and Val Kilmer's Iceman. There are definitely a few familiar faces who are missing, including Meg Ryan, who played Carole Bradshaw in the first "Top Gun." Since Carole and Goose's son Rooster is one of the main characters in the sequel, it seems a little odd that she's not in the movie, but the plot does offer a brief explanation.

What Is Carole Bradshaw's Role in "Top Gun: Maverick"?

While Carole isn't a part of the present-day story in "Top Gun: Maverick," she plays a very significant role in the backstory. One of the major conflicts throughout the movie is the tension between Maverick and Rooster, whose father Goose

Why Tom Cruise's Love Interest in "Top Gun: Maverick" Looks Different

Why Tom Cruise's Love Interest in
"Top Gun: Maverick" is packed with nostalgia and callbacks to the original 1986 movie, including some legacy characters and familiar scenes. One thing that has changed, however, is who plays the love interest to Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The sequel sees Maverick, now decades into his career, wooing a bar owner (and daughter of an admiral) named Penny Benjamin. Here's what to know about Maverick's love interest.

Is Penny Benjamin in the Original "Top Gun"?

Penny, played by Jennifer Connelly, is not physically in the first "Top Gun" movie, but she does exist in it, even if she's only mentioned in passing and is never actually seen on screen.

In one scene, Maverick's past exploits are said to include "a history of high-speed passes over five air-control towers and one admiral's daughter," and Maverick's Bff Goose mutters Penny's name under his breath - making her the "admiral's daughter" in question.

Top Gun: Maverick – Jennifer Connelly Recalls Stunt Flying with Tom Cruise

Top Gun: Maverick – Jennifer Connelly Recalls Stunt Flying with Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise wanted to do barrel rolls. That’s one of the more singular moments Jennifer Connelly can remember about her time on Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 classic. The opportunity to go flying with her legendary co-star had come about because Maverick features one of those classic movie moments. You know the type: a pair of old flames consider rekindling their romance as their single-engine aircraft drifts above the clouds and a lonely stretch of the Mojave Desert. Perhaps you’ve even seen something similar, with movie stars in front of green screens making eyes as they vanish into the wide blue yonder.

But in Top Gun: Maverick, they’re doing it for real as Cruise’s glorified biplane rises above the weather, and Connelly as his wingman in the backseat looks out in astonishment at the horizon.

“He did pilot the plane,” Connelly says with

Kelly McGillis Knows Exactly Why She Wasn't Asked to Be a Part of the Top Gun Sequel

When the first trailer for the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, dropped at San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks ago, you might have noticed that a major face was missing from the new footage. Although Tom Cruise's Maverick is obviously featured heavily, his love interest from the first film, Charlie Blackwood, is absent. Wondering why? Actress Kelly McGillis, who played the astrophysicist and civilian Top Gun instructor in the original film, certainly isn't.

"I'm old, and I'm fat, and I look age-appropriate for what my age is, and that is not what that whole scene is about," the 62-year-old told Et, confirming that she wasn't asked to be a part of the film. "I'd much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and who and what I am at my age, as opposed to placing a value on all that other stuff."

Although there won't be any Charlie cameo,

Kelly McGillis Wasn’t Invited Back For Top Gun: Maverick

Since Tom Cruise took San Diego Comic-Con (and not the mention the world) by storm with the first trailer of Top Gun: Maverick, not a whole lot’s been said about the highly-anticipated sequel. However, we can add the absence of one of the series’ most central characters to the tiny list of things we do know about the film.

Kerry McGillis, who played Charlie Blackwood, one of the Top Gun instructors and main love interest to Cruise’s Pete Mitchell, has revealed that she wasn’t asked to return for the sequel.

When asked by Entertainment Tonight whether or not she’ll be attending any of the film’s promotional events, she had this to say:

“You know what, I don’t know how to answer that because one, it hasn’t happened. Two, if and when it did happen, I would have to assess where I am, what I’m doing,

Kelly McGillis' Hollywood Comeback Is More About Hallmark Movies Than 'Top Gun 2'

After a self-imposed exile from Hollywood, Kelly McGillis is back on our screens. But she's not necessarily feeling the "need for speed" As her former co-stars Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer suit up for the sequel to 1986's Top Gun, Kelly likely won't be reprising her role as flight instructor Charlie Blackwood, Tom's on-screen love interest. Instead, she has been sticking to quieter projects like Hallmark movies and horror flicks. Kelly starred in Hallmark's An Uncommon Grace last year, for example, playing a grandmother living on a farm in Amish country. Other recent gigs of hers include the horror films The Innkeepers and We Are What We Are, the thriller Mother of All Secrets, and episodes of the TV shows The L Word and Z Nation. Kelly in Top Gun. Covert boards UK horror 'Matriarch' (exclusive)
Newcomers Charlie Blackwood, Julie Hannan and Briony Monroe star.

Covert Media has come on board at Efm to handle worldwide sales on British filmmaker Scott Vickers’ horror thriller Matriarch.

The film, which wrapped last year, shot over 12 days in late 2016 in a farm owned by executive producer Alan Cuthbert in Balfron near Glasgow. Vickers’ partner at New Light Films, Steven Little, produces.

Vickers cut his teeth in acting, screenwriting and short film directing and wrote the screenplay about a pregnant woman and her husband who are taken in by a farmer and his wife after their car crashes in the remote Scottish countryside.

Once inside, they realise their hosts’ daughter is in fact abducted and made headlines when she went missing years earlier. Things begin to heat up when the farmer and his wife tell the couple they want to take the woman’s baby once the child is born.
