"Can we push back this deadline that you've set?" Dark Sky Films has revealed an official trailer for indie thriller Lifeline, from director Feras Alfuqaha. Yet another hotline thriller focusing on a person answering a phone - this night he receives an odd, paranormal call. There have been a few of these recently - including The Guilty with Jake Gyllenhaal or Tessa Thompson's The Listener. In Lifeline, a suicide hotline operator gets a late-night call from someone who claims to be him, knowing private details only he would know, and threatening to end his life in an hour. The operator must race against time to stop "himself" from suicide. Josh Stewart stars as Steven Thomas, along with August Maturo, Charlene Amoia, Jocelyn Ayanna, Nicole Santiago, Jill Awbrey, & Brecken Merrill. This also reminds me of the film Frequency (2000) about a father and son connecting across time through the phone. Lifeline...

Bianca D'Ambrosio, August Maturo, Mirabelle Lee and Chiara D'Ambrosio in Slapface
Lucas (August Maturo) has lost his parents. He’s being looked after by his older brother Tom (Mike Manning), who is ill-equipped at cope and takes out his own stress by bullying him, so he seeks refuge in the woods, where he befriends a monster. Beautifully shot and beautifully played, Slapface captures the magic of a Spielberg film, only to transform into something emotionally devastating. It screened at Frightfest 2021 and is now getting a release on Shudder, which prompted me to discuss it with director Jeremiah Kipp.
I might not have caught Slapface at Frightfest were it not for the urging of Julie Kauffman, whose documentary The Brilliant Terror explores grassroots filmmaking. She had been really impressed by Jeremiah’s work, so I ask him how he felt about that film.

Stars: August Maturo, Mike Manning, Libe Barer, Dan Hedaya, Bianca D’Ambrosio, Chiara D’Ambrosio, Mirabelle Lee, Lukas Hassel | Written and Directed by Jeremiah Kipp
Writer/director Jeremiah Kipp has expanded his short, also titled Slapface, into feature-length; which, as with any short, is a risky undertaking. What works at fifteen or twenty minutes may be drawn out and dull at ninety. Changes to the plot may ruin the mood or message of the original. That’s even more true for something like Slapface which relied heavily on feeling and emotion.
Lucas and Tom lost their parents in a car accident, leaving Tom an unprepared and somewhat unwilling guardian for his younger brother. He would much rather be at the bar with Anna than be at home, or at work for that matter. This leaves Lucas on his own a lot and he spends his time wandering around the woods and getting into trouble with the cops,...

It originally premiered last year at the Cinequest Film Festival and FrightFest, also stopping by Grimmfest and the Razor Reel Flanders Film Festival in Belgium. A boy deals with the loss of his mother by creating a dangerous relationship with a monster rumored to live in the woods. The film stars August Maturo as Lucas, with Mike Manning, Dan Hedaya, Mirabelle Lee, Lukas Hassel, Libe Barer, Bianca D’Ambrosio, and Chiara D'Ambrosio. This won the Audience Award at Cinequest, and looks like a thrilling little horror film with a good twist in the story. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jeremiah Kipp's Slapface,...

“My dad says if I ever see a gun I have to leave immediately,” says Roland (Cameron Crovetti). He’s a good boy and he aims to take his dad’s advice, but his friend Chris pleads with him to return to the abandoned boat where they’ve been playing. They don’t have to use the gun. It can stay in the bag. They can just get back to what they were doing before. Chris may well spend the rest of his life wishing he’d taken his dad’s advice.

Luke Benward (“Dumplin'”) and Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”) have pivoted behind the camera with a new project, “Boys,” Variety can exclusively reveal.
The short film marks a debut for both Benward and Winter, with Benward directing and Winter producing.
“Boys,” which tackles the topics of children, parents and guns, tells the story of two young boys who are playing in the desert when their day takes a dark turn, leading to loss of innocence. The trailer opens with Cameron Crovetti (“Big Little Lies”) sitting in a bathtub streaked with blood.
Benward began his career at the age of 5 when cast opposite Mel Gibson in “We Were Soldiers” before going on to star in projects such as “Dumplin'” opposite Jennifer Aniston and “Dear John” alongside Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum. “You understand why we have to do this,” says Tom, hitting his little brother in the face.
Tom (Mike Manning) has been legally responsible for Lucas (August Maturo) ever since the death of their parents. Deprived of his family and future in one fell swoop, he works in a manual job, drinks in the local bar and tries to suppress his rage and grief so that he can provide the care the kid needs. Naturally, Lucas is also traumatised and would be a handful even for an experienced adult. He disappears for hours on end, he refuses to listen, he smashes things up and he engages in strange rituals, longing to reconnect with his mother somehow. So Tom, not knowing what else to do, hits him in the face, and Lucas hits back, and each uses an open hand and Tom never uses his full strength, but still, he’s doing damage.

On the surface, from its pure and simple, monster-in-the-woods logline, Slapface might sound like another Blair Witch, Slender Man-esque urban legend chiller waiting to happen. Lots of creeping, twig-snapping tension, mysterious whispers in the forest, and a plethora of halloween mask-lead visuals that you might assume will eventually play out like any other cheap Blumhouse clone. It’s a solemn surprise then that the reality is anything but.
Slapface, after all, isn’t the monster, but a highly sinister game, played by two recently-orphaned brothers, struggling to make ends-meet, now on their own in a secluded house on the margins of society. The older Tom (Mike Manning), has turned to drinking to feed his grief, while the much younger Lucas (Girl Meets World’s August Maturo), struggles with loneliness, spending his days wandering the woods, trying (and failing) to escape local bullies.
The only way the boys can connect it seems,...

Writer-director Lynn Roth instinctively knows how to pluck the heartstrings with her heartrending historical drama, “Shepherd: The Story of a Jewish Dog.” Her adaptation retains the wit and wisdom found within the pages of Asher Kravitz’s novel “The Jewish Dog,” whose unconventional conceit chronicling the Holocaust through the perspective of a German Shepherd lends itself to plenty of poetic and fantastical realism on screen. Yet the family-friendly feature all too frequently falls into conventional trappings that it unwittingly sets up for itself, particularly when it strays from the pup’s point of view.
Kaleb is born surrounded by the love of a Jewish German family, the final puppy birthed on a warm, sunny day. He has the misfortune, however, of entering into this world right before a terrible, tumultuous time for the country in the 1930s. But as the pick of the litter, he’s showered with praise and...

A family of German Jews are separated from their pet by Nuremburg laws in this honest, unsentimental film
In 1930s Germany, the thoroughly assimilated Jewish Schoenmann family welcome the arrival of a litter of puppies when Anya, their pedigree German shepherd, gives birth in their sun-splashed flat. Although young Joshua (August Maturo) and his sister Rachel (Viktoria Stefanovszky) plead with them to keep the lot, mother Shoshonna (Ayelet Zurer) and father Ralph (Ken Duken) insist that only one puppy can be kept; the rest must be rehomed. The lucky pup who stays, a male named Kaleb, forms an intense bond with young master Jacob.

William Sadler (Bill & Ted) and Mike C. Manning (God’s Not Dead) are set to star together in an upcoming horror thriller called Slapface, which will be written and directed by Jeremiah Kipp.
The film follows Lucas (August Maturo from The Nun), “who lives with his older brother (Manning) after the loss of their parents. Lucas befriends a Monster in the nearby woods, and trouble ensues. The town Sheriff (Sadler) tries to thwart the wrongdoings of Lucas and the Monster before it is too late.”
That sounds like an interesting story that could make for a fun horror movie. It seems like it will be a darker, more horror-fueled version of the 80s film Little Monsters.
Sadler is a fan favorite character actor who has appeared in so many films and TV shows. This seems like it’ll be another great role for him to take on and he will...

A highly lucrative and incredibly foreseeing addition which came to be a highly sought after and rich commodity within the horror community, leading Warner Bros to explore the roots of Valak in its own inevitable spin-off and two years later here we are with the highly anticipated final product.

“The Nun” features a demon nun, two exorcisms, and some zombies, but Demian Bichir had more realistic fears in mind on Tuesday night at the horror film’s premiere in Hollywood.
The Mexican-American actor has been an outspoken advocate for immigration reform, most recently penning an op-ed for Deadline last month about the separation of immigrant families at the border.
“Immigration reform is nothing new. It’s been on the table in congress for decades, and we keep on fighting for it to get a real immigration reform that can be fair to so many millions of human beings who make our lives easier and better and happier everyday without getting anything in return,” Bichir told Variety. “There’s a lot of misinformation and these crazy loonies at the White House.
