Nawazuddin Siddiqui not a part of Karthik Subbaraj's Rajinikanth starrer

KollywoodThe 'Gangs of Wasseypur' star did not give them his nod.Digital NativeDigital NativeAfter Nana Patekar in Kaala, another Bollywood actor is most likely to be pitted against superstar Rajinikanth in his upcoming yet-untitled project with Karthik Subbaraj. If the industry grapevine is anything to go by, Karthik is said to have met and pitched the story to Nawazuddin while promoting his film Mercury in Mumbai last week. But, the Gangs of Wasseypur star did not give them his nod. However, Nawazuddin’s manager has denied the reports. Nawazuddin’s manager reportedly told the Indian Express, “If it was true it would be great, but no, there is nothing like this happening.” Notably, Vijay Sethupathi was also reported as one of the actors in the mix. On teaming up with Rajinikanth, Subbaraj said in a chat with Sun TV recently: “Even though I’ve made four films in my career so far, I grew fascinated towards cinema because of superstar Rajinikanth sir. To get to direct him is the best moment of my life,” Subbaraj said, adding that the project will go floors in next two months and will be wrapped up this year itself. Asked if the project will be as ambitious as Sun Pictures produced Enthiran in terms of scale, Subbaraj said his film will be quite different from Enthiran. “It’ll be a proper Rajini film,” he said. He also sees collaborating with the Superstar will come with its set of expectations and responsibilities. “I see it as an enjoyable challenge,” he added. Anirudh Ravichander has been finalised to compose music. The film will go on floors post Kaala's release. A source close to Karthik adds, “It will be a pucca Superstar film with all the necessary mass elements.” Rajinikanth currently awaits the release of Kaala, which has been directed by Pa Ranjith and it’s his second-time collaboration with the Superstar after Kabali. The film is believed to revolve around the lives of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai and their fight for equality. Produced by Dhanush, Kaala also stars Nana Patekar, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjali Patil, Huma Qureshi and Samuthirakani in pivotal roles. Shankar’s 2.0, a sequel to Enthiran, was supposed to originally hit the screens on April 27. The release of the magnum opus, rumoured to be made on a lavish budget of Rs 450 crore, has been deferred once again owing to high VFX work. (Content provided by Digital Native)

‘Kaala’ gets U/A certificate

KollywoodThe film’s release, slated for April 27, might be postponed because of the ongoing strike in the Tamil film industry.Digital NativeSuperstar Rajinikanth’s Kaala is one of the highly anticipated films this season. After recently completing the censor formalities, the film has been awarded a U/A certificate. Sources close to the crew say that the film has been censored with 14 cuts. Kaala, directed by Pa Ranjith, stars Rajinikanth in the title role. The film was slated to hit the marquee on April 27, but it looks like the film’s release might get postponed because of the ongoing strike by Tamil film producers. Lyca Productions, who have bagged the distribution rights for the film, has extended its support to the Tamil Film Producers’ Council. “We are in sync with the Producers Council and in complete support of the demands. We will comply with the same till the system is rectified. #Tfpc,” Lyca Productions recently tweeted. We are in sync with the Producers Council and in complete support of the demands. He said that the film talks about the livelihood of a society, Dharavi in particular. Ranjith said that the story is about the diversity of Dharavi slum. The film has a bevy of stars in the cast including Samuthirakani, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Aravind Akash and Sayaji Shinde. The film also stars Nana Patekar as the main antagonist. The Ab Tak Chhappan actor, who will play the role of a ruthless, conniving politician, is returning to Tamil films after a decade. Santosh Narayan is the music director for this flick with Murali G being the cinematographer and A Sreekar Prasad the editor. Kaala is bankrolled by Dhanush under his banner Wunderbar Films. It is worth noting here that director Pa Ranjith and Rajinikanth had teamed up earlier for the movie Kabali in 2016 and it went on to become a huge hit. (Content provided by Digital Native)

Rajini floors Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi with his humility

KollywoodPankaj makes his debut in the Tamil film industry with the Rajinikanth starrer ‘Kaala’. Digital NativeDigital NativeBollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi is making his debut in the Tamil film industry with the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala. He plays a police officer in the movie and is elated about sharing screen space with the legendary star. On working with the Superstar, Pankaj revealed in an interview that he was floored by his humility. Pankaj reportedly said, “My experience of shooting with Rajini sir has been amazing. He is a very humble man who used to check on me and ensure I ate on time. We have had conversations about acting, about spirituality and the film industry. When he is in front of the camera, he takes on a different persona. I learnt a lot from this experience. I knew I needed to be part of a film where I share screen space with someone of his calibre. The minute the offer came, I said ‘yes’ and I am delighted that I did.” Kaala marks the second time collaboration of director Pa Ranjith with Rajinikanth after the success of Kabali. The story revolves around Rajinikanth, his family which comprises four sons, grandchildren, his friends and more. It will be the story of an emotional patriarch. The film is due to hit the marquee on April 27 worldwide. Bankrolled by Dhanush under his banner Wunderbar Films, Kaala has a bevy of stars in the cast, including Nana Patekar, Samuthirakani, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil and Sukanya. Veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar will be seen playing a politician with a negative shade. He is returning to Tamil movies after a decade; he was last seen in Bharathiraja’s Bommalattam in a pivotal role. Santosh Narayan is the music director for this gangster flick that has cinematography by G Murali and editing by A Sreekar Prasad. It may be mentioned here that Kaala was initially scheduled for release after Rajini’s magnum opus 2.0, directed by Shankar, was out. However, the release of 2.0 was postponed to a later date due to delay in the CG work and Kaala took up the April 27 slot originally allocated for 2.0. (Content provided by Digital Native)

Will Rajini’s ‘Kaala’ release on April 27?

KollywoodProducers are demanding that films for which release dates had been announced earlier should make it to the silver screens soon after the strike is over.Digital NativeDigital NativeDue to the sudden developments in the south film industry, confusion prevails over the release of the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala. Reports indicate that the producers of small budget movies are raising a war flag over the preference given to high budget movies. With the cinema industry strike going on at present, some producers are distraught that their films are not being given priority. The producers want all the films for which the release date had been announced earlier to make it to the silver screens soon after the strike is over. This means high budget films, such as Kaala, may have to look for another date. The producers have taken up this issue with the Tamil Film Producers’ Council and an amicable solution is expected any time soon. Meanwhile, producer Madurai Selvam has threatened to immolate himself if his film is not given priority in the release race. It may be mentioned here that the Tamil film industry is currently engaged in a standoff with Digital Service Providers (DSPs) from March 1 in the state, because of which no new releases are happening in the state, which has affected several new big and small budget films. Following this, the Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors Association (Tnfea) recently passed a decision to go on an indefinite strike starting from March 16. Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kaala was initially touted to release on April 27 only after his 2.0 was out. But the delay in the latter’s post production work ensured that Kaala would be out on April 27, the date originally earmarked for 2.0. Directed by Pa Ranjith, Kaala stars Rajinikanth in the lead role with Nana Patekar, Samuthirakani, Eswari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil and Sukanya in the star cast. Santhosh Narayanan has composed music for this venture with Murali G as the cinematographer and A Sreekar Prasad as the editor. The film is produced by R Dhanush under his banner Wunderbar Films. So, will Kaala bow to pressure from the producers or march on ahead to its release date? We need to wait and watch. (Content provided by Digital Native)

'Kaala' is about the diversity of Dharavi: Director Pa Ranjith

KollywoodHe also added that the inspiration for the titular character, played by Rajinikanth, was his grandfather.Digital NativeDigital NativeFilmmaker Pa Ranjith, who has teamed up for the second time with superstar Rajinikanth in upcoming gangster drama Kaala, says his film is not based on the life of any individual in his latest interview to Tamil magazine Vikatan. Brushing aside rumours that the character of Rajinikanth, who plays a slum lord turned gangster in the film, is based on the life of Haji Mastan, Ranjith clarified that the film is not inspired by any person’s life. He said that the film talks about the livelihood of a society, Dharavi in particular. Ranjith said that the story is about the diversity of Dharavi slum. He went on to add that a lot of Tirunelveli Tamils live in Dharavi, a place filled with multi-cultural, multi-lingual families, and he wrote the script keeping in mind the lives of these people. He said the inspiration for the titular character, played by Rajinikanth, was his grandfather. Kaala, produced by Dhanush, is the story of an emotional patriarch. The story revolves around Rajinikanth, his family which comprises of four sons, grandchildren, his friends and more. Slated for release on April 27 worldwide, the teaser of Kaala will be released on March 2. The film stars Huma Qureshi and Nana Patekar, who is returning to Tamil after a decade, in pivotal roles. Patekar in south was last seen in Bharathiraja's Bommalattam. Although it was initially rumoured that Huma would be playing Rajinikanth’s pair in the film, it was later clarified that she plays a college student. Nana Patekar will be seen playing a politician with a negative shade. Kaala, which has music by Santhosh Narayanan, also stars Anjali Patil and Samuthirakani in important roles. Apparently, Rajinikanth will also have dialogues in Hindi, and the makers don’t intend to dub those lines in Tamil as it will appeal to non-Hindi speaking audiences as well. Ambedkar, Akilan and Hip-Hop: The political subtext of 'Kaala' teaser explained

KollywoodPa Ranjith's films are always rich in political subtext - from caste to gender - and the 'Kaala' teaser starring Rajinikanth does not disappoint.Sowmya RajendranThe teaser for Rajinikanth's Kaala, director Pa Ranjith's second outing with the superstar, was released at 12.00 am on March 2. The date was pushed from March 1 because of the death of Kanchi Jayendra Saraswati - the irony is not lost on Pa Ranjith fans who enjoy the political depth in his films immensely. In all three of his films released so far, Attakathi, Madras as well as Kabali, Ranjith has brought in narratives of the oppressed in a "mass", celebratory way that has seldom been seen on the big screen. What was subtle in Attakathi and Madras, exploded in Kabali, with none other than the superstar himself lending his body and voice to political expressions. With Kaala, the team seems to have notched it up further. The teaser begins with a chorus of voices shouting, "Poraduvom" or "We will fight", placing it immediately in the context of a people's struggle. Nana Patekar, who plays a politician in the film, is dressed entirely in white, and is pitched opposite Kaala - a man whose name means black and is also dressed entirely in the colour. Interestingly, white has usually been the colour of Good and black, the colour of Evil. Ranjith subverts these hegemonic colour associations to give us a villain who wears white and speaks of "cleaning" the country and a hero who wears black and is proud of the "dirt" in his home. We already saw an assertion of "Karuppu" politics in Kabali, with Rajinikanth speaking about the power of black. While Rajini films in the past have had heroines fawning around the actor, and justifying why they fell in love with a dark-skinned man, Kabali avoided the condescension. What's usually a romantic song and dance sequence in the superstar's film took on political overtones in Ranjith's film. Kaala plays with the same idea with much more confidence, directly re-imagining the colour black as heroic, something we saw Black Panther accomplish with great success recently. Interestingly, in the teaser, as Rajini does his trademark walk, we see Hip hop dancers in the foreground. An art form that originated on the streets and incorporated the dance of the African-American and Latino communities in the Us. The voice-over (Samuthirakani) explains what the name 'Kaala' means - as Rajini walks with blackened joyous faces behind him, we're told 'Kaala' means 'black' and he's also 'Karikalan', the one who fights in order to protect. The first teaser of big star vehicles seldom features women characters. Kaala, however, not only has shots of Eswari Rao and Huma Qureshi, Eswari even gets lines! The actor, who plays Rajinikanth's wife in the film, can be heard complaining about his tendency to get into fights and doesn't seem as awed by Kaala as the watching viewers. In Kabali, too, Ranjith broke the mould of the overly impressed heroine who was a fixture in Rajini's earlier films. A spirited Kumudhavalli (Radhika Apte) berated Kabali whenever required and wasn't the stereotypical subservient wife. Ranjith's films are inclusive of all kinds of hierarchical politics, including that of gender and the director is increasingly attempting to bring these "upsets" to the mainstream.  The "punch" dialogue in the teaser is undoubtedly the portion when Kaala says, "Kya re, settingah? Vengayin mavan, I have come alone, come if you have the guts!" Speaking in the Nellai dialect (Ranjith has said in an interview that this was because several Tamils in Dharavi, where the film is set, are from Tirunelveli), Rajini's mix of Hindi and Tamil has already set the Internet on fire. But what does "Vengayin mavan" mean? The word 'Vengai' means 'Brave', and is used to refer to a fierce animal like the tiger, but it could also be a reference to Tamil writer Akilan's Vengayin Maindhan, a historical novel about Rajendra Chozha, the son of Rajaraja Chozhan whose reign is considered to be the most glorious in Tamil history. Recently, there have been attempts by different caste outfits in Tamil Nadu to claim Rajaraja Chozhan as their own. Kaala using the phrase challenges this notion of ownership. Further, Karikala Chozhan, a king who ruled in the Sangam era, is considered to be the greatest of the early Chozhas. Given Rajini's name in the film and the use of the phrase, it's unlikely that the link is a mere coincidence. Many say that Nana's character is modeled on the Thackerays, given that the film is set in Mumbai. Ranjith has denied that any of his characters are based on real life people, nevertheless, one can be sure that the audience will watch for similarities closely. For now, the reference to the desire to "clean" the country seems to be a potshot at cosmetic "cleanliness" campaigns like Swachch Bharat conducted by governments which do little to improve the lives of the oppressed. Adjectives like "clean" and "pure" (a word dear to fascists around the world) that Nana's character throws around are politically loaded and signify an awareness within the narrative of the systemic failure to emancipate the oppressed, even as cosmetic changes are made. Pa Ranjith's films always have portraits of personalities who have inspired people's struggles and Kaala is no different. Even as Rajini delivers his finishing lines in the teaser, we spotted a picture of Wangari Maathai, black environmentalist activist, Nobel Laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, on the wall. There's another picture too, but too blurry in the teaser for us to identify. Towards the end of the teaser, Kaala says that there's more "rowdyism" on offer but Ranjith brings it to a close with Ambedkar's powerful words - "Kattravai, Pattravai" which mean "Educate, Agitate". The third word in the strategy that Ambedkar gave to his followers was "Organise" - but that does not complete the slogan in the teaser although the lyrcis leading up to the end suggest it. Is this because Ranjith sees Kaala as a sequel to Kabali? In the first film, Rajini played a Malaysian Tamil don who sets up an educational institution for his oppressed people - Educate, done (Madras, too, stressed on education before agitation). Is Kaala then the second phase - Agitate? And will we see another film to complete the trilogy - Organise?

Mahesh Babu and Allu Arjun’s films to clash with ‘Kaala’

Entertainment Both films announced their release dates a few weeks ago and have no plans to change it. Digital NativeFew days ago, Dhanush, producer of the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala had announced that the film would hit the marquee on April 27th. Earlier, the slot was earmarked for Rajinikanth’s other upcoming film 2.0. However, it was taken over by Kaala with the post production of 2.0 getting delayed. It is well known Rajinikanth’s movie gets a massive opening and has always enjoyed the ‘sole film release’ status with all other releases being put off for want of theatres or patronage. With the entire film industry waiting for the Kaala and 2.0 team to come up with an announcement on the release dates, it is now clear that Kaala has taken over the April 27 slot. On this, industry pundit, G Dhananjayan had tweeted: “When the King #kaalaa arrives on 27th April, others have no chance to stand. Though we announced first our film #MrChandramouli releasing on 27th April, now we will rework the date with Team & announce. Best wishes @dhanushkraja sir @beemji sir & Team to rock (sic).” He also went on to add that a huge film like Kaala is the need of the hour to revive the gloomy situation and the box office. On this, he tweeted: “Met 3 popular theatre chain owners at the wedding reception. They reported 25 to 30% drop in footfalls in the last 2 to 3 months & stated several show cancellations for new films released. Very challenging situation. We need a huge film like #Kaala to bring back audience.” But two Tollywood films – the Mahesh Babu starrer Bharath Ane Nenu and Allu Arjun’s Naa Peru Surya – will clash with Kaala head-on, we hear. Both these films have announced its release date few weeks ago and have no plans to change it. Kaala, a gangster film that is being directed Pa Ranjith, has Rajnikanth in the title role with Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Easwari Rao and Samuthirakani in important roles. Santhosh Narayanan is the music director of this film with Ruben editing it. (Content provided by Digital Native)

‘Kaala’ team miffed with leak of stunt sequence

KollywoodThe film has Rajinikanth playing a powerful don who fights for the rights of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai.Digital NativePiracy is proving to be a real bane for the south Indian film industry. A video clip of a stunt sequence from the Superstar’s upcoming gangster drama Kaala, directed by Pa Ranjith and set to release on April 27, is going around on social networking sites. The team is understandably upset and furious over the leak. In the clip, touted to be the climax of the film, Rajinikanth is seen fighting the antagonists against a fiery background. It may be recalled that last year an audio clip was leaked from the film. It was touted to be the intro song of the film and sounded similar to Ulagam Oruvanukka from Kabali. Also, some working stills and a family photo from the film were leaked as well. Going by the leaked family picture, it would be Brahmotsavam actress Easwari Rao who will be playing Rajinikanth’s wife in the movie. This makes us wonder what role Huma Qureshi, who was thought to be the female lead in the movie, will play as she doesn’t feature anywhere in that family picture. Set in the ’80s, Kaala has Rajinikanth playing a migrant who comes to Mumbai from Tirunelveli and goes on to become a powerful don and later a righteous gangster in Dharavi. The film shows Rajinikanth fighting for the rights of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai. Since the film has been shot mostly against the backdrop of Mumbai, the makers have shot the film simultaneously in Hindi. Unlike Kabali, the film won’t be dubbed in Hindi and Rajinikanth is expected to mouth his lines in Hindi and in Marathi at some key junctures as it will appeal to non-Hindi speaking audiences. The film features an ensemble cast that also has Bollywood veteran Nana Patekar playing the antagonist. The Ab Tak Chhappan actor will be seen in the role of a ruthless, conniving politician often at loggerheads with Rajinikanth’s character. The others in the cast include Huma Qureshi, Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi and Samuthirakani. The film is tipped to be made as a Tamil-Hindi bilingual and will be dubbed in Telugu. The project marks the reunion of director Pa Ranjith with Rajinikanth after Kabali. Santhosh Narayanan is scoring the music, while national award-winning Sreekar Prasad will take care of editing. Kaala is about the oppression of Tamil people in Mumbai and Rajini is reportedly playing a don in the film. In Kabali, too, Rajinikanth had played a don but the film was set in Malaysia and revolved around the lives of Malaysian Tamils. Kaala also stars Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Samuthirakani and others. The film has music by Santosh Narayanan. There was much uncertainty about the film's release date after it was announced that 2.O, directed by Shankar, which also stars Rajinikanth, will not release in January as planned. 2.O, the sequel to the science fiction film Enthiran was also speculated to release in April. Rajini’s ‘Kaala’ to release before his ‘2.0’?

KollywoodThe film was initially planned as a Deepavali 2018 release.Digital NativeDigital NativeAccording to industry reports, it looks like the release of the Rajinikanth starrer Kaala may be advanced. The makers of this film have maintained all this while that it will be out only after the Rajini – Shankar venture 2.0. So, it is interesting to note the news of its release being preponed. However, there is no official confirmation on this yet. Kaala was initially planned as a Deepavali 2018 release. It may be mentioned here that the release of 2.0 was postponed a couple of times before and it was expected that the film will be out this summer. However, with the delay in the VFX work, which is happening in several studios across the globe, getting delayed, it now looks like Kaala will grace the theatres first. While 2.0, a magnum opus made on a budget of Rs 450 crore is being bankrolled by Lyca Productions, Kaala is being produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films and will be distributed by Lyca Productions. Directed by Pa Ranjith, Kaala is touted to be a gangster film that has Rajnikanth playing the title role. The rest of the star cast includes Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar, Anjali Patil, Sukanya, Easwari Rao and Samuthirakani in important roles. Santhosh Narayanan is the music director of this film with Ruben editing it. With 2.0’s release pushed to August this year and speculated to be an Independence Day weekend release, Kaala is expected to be a Tamil New Year’s release. However, there is no official clarification and we have to wait for the producers to make a statement on the release date. If the news that Kaala will be a Tamil New Year’s release turns out to be true, fans will be happy that they will get to see their idol on the silver screens during the festive season. It may be noted here that Pa Ranjith had directed Rajini earlier in Kabali, which turned out to be a huge hit. (Content provided by Digital Native)

Rajinikanth begins dubbing for ‘Kaala’; makers target August release

KollywoodThe Pa Ranjith directorial features Rajinikanth in the role of a slumlord-turned-gangster fighting for oppressed Tamils in Mumbai.Digital NativeSuperstar Rajinikanth’s next big release is Kaala, which marks his reunion with Kabali director Pa Ranjith. The film features Rajinikanth in the role of a slumlord-turned-gangster fighting for oppressed Tamils in Mumbai. On Sunday, the star began dubbing for the film at Chennai’s Knack Studios and he’s expected to wrap up his portion in a couple of days. The process was planned to be completed in December but had to be postponed as Rajinikanth decided to take out time to meet and greet his fans over the period of a week. Being produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, the film is gearing up for release in August. “The first copy should be ready by February or March. The team is ready for an April release but they can’t come until 2.0 releases. Hence, they’re planning an August release. Ranjith is taking his time to ensure the output lives up to the expectations of the audiences,” a source said. The film also stars Huma Qureshi and Nana Patekar, who is returning to Tamil after a decade. He was last seen in Bharathiraja’s Bommalatam. Although it was initially rumoured that Huma would be playing Rajinikanth’s pair in the film, it was later clarified that she plays a college student and her role is very important from the story’s perspective. Nana Patekar will be seen playing a politician with a negative shade. The film also features Anjali Patil and Samuthirakani in important roles. Apparently, Rajinikanth will also have dialogues in Hindi, and the makers don’t intend to dub those lines in Tamil as it will appeal to non-Hindi speaking audiences as well. Meanwhile, reports have emerged that Rajinikanth and Ranjith may team up again for one more project, slated to go on the floors next year. Despite rumours that Kaala might be his last film, sources close to Rajinikanth are quite positive about his third collaboration with Ranjith. The 67-year-old star’s fans are eagerly looking forward to Shankar’s 2.0, tipped to be a Rs 450 crore science-fiction based action film. A sequel to Enthiran, the film will mark the southern debut of Bollywood star Akshay Kumar. Content provided by Digital Native.
