He had a paragliding accident in 1993 and was paralyzed. The story of his partial recovery is told in his book "Le second souffle" and is the basis of The Intouchables (2011). He is from a Corsican noble family who had conflicting relations with the Bonapartes. He is the nephew of Odile Versois 's second husband, count François Pozzo di Borgo.
