Dascha Polanco is a Dominican American actress known for playing the character Dayanara "Daya" Diaz on Orange Is the New Black (2013). As of January 2018, she has a recurring role on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (2016) as Detective Lori Weider. Polanco was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and moved to the United States at a young age. She was raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York and Miami by her father, a mechanic, and mother, a cosmetologist. Polanco is the oldest of three children; she has a brother and sister.

She was born in the Dominican Republic but grew up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
Her daughter, Dasany Kristal Gonzalez, played a 14-year-old version of Polanco's character, Daya Diaz, on the fifth season of "Orange Is the New Black (2013)".
She has two children: a daughter born when Polanco was 18 and a son born two years later.
She was arrested for assault on a teenager in 2015. The charges were dropped, however, after police determined the allegations were part of an extortion plot by a young neighbor.
She graduated with a Bachelor's in Psychology from Hunter College, New York, in 2008.
She was working at a hospital and attending nursing school when she was offered the part on "Orange Is the New Black (2013)." She went to her audition in scrubs.
She had wanted to be an actress from an early age but believed she wouldn't have success due to her curvy figure.
