Iain McKinna is an audio and ADR engineer, musician, music and audio producer who has been in the recording studio business since 1976. He is currently involved in many successful recordings and audio projects.
Offbeat Studios and Offbeat Audio Ltd in Edinburgh's Royal Mile was established in 1994 along with his wife and studio manager Kirsty McKinna. The Offbeat studio is a high end recording facility which is a BBC approved studio. Amongst many other companies the studio makes recordings for Channel 4. ITV, Sky Cinema, Fox TV, Bento Box, HBO & Titmouse animation and Riot Games.
Iain produces professional Audio for Voice Overs, Podcasts, Sound to picture, ADR, Voice Dialogue, Audio Editing, Audiobook Production for Major Publishers including Penguin Random House and Harper Collins. He is also involved in Music production and Composition.
Background Info: Iain is a multi-instrumentalist and has worked with many songwriters and solo artists. He started out at Edinburgh's Southside Studios in 1976 and recorded many well known Punk and New Wavebands. TV21 / The Scars / Freeze and The Valves. He was signed as a songwriter to Simon Cowell's publishing company E&S Music in 1982/4 with the band Flying Colours. He then ran Sonic Studios in Edinburgh from 1987 till 1992 and worked for Sony Records, EMI Music, Virgin Records, Charisma, Zomba, Polygram & Polydor Records. He recorded The Spirit Of The Glen trilogy for Universal Records and Decca Records. The album Journey from the trilogy achieved a Classical Brit award for best album in 2009 and reached no1 in the Classical Charts in 2009.
He got his break into movie work when he recorded the commentary for all 15 episodes of the award winning series The Story Of Film, an Odyssey, recording the commentary of Director Mark Cousins which won The Stanley Kubrick Award for best documentary in 2012. The Eyes Of Orson Welles won 2nd prize for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. The Ice Stupas Of Ladakh won best Documentary prize for New York Film Festival in 2017. Iain recorded the commentary of presenter Russell Beard for the series for Al-Jazeera TV.
In 2024 he worked with Tilda Swinton, recording her ADR on two current movie projects, The Room Next Door with Director Pablo, and The End with Joshua Oppenheimer. He also recorded ADR for Amrita Puri for the Bollywood movie The Kandahar Hijack. He also recorded ADR for The Traitors USA with Alan Cumming.
