Rlje Films is releasing the Korean action thriller from Jong-ho Huh, Monstrum on VOD, Digital HD, DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow, November 17th. Screen Anarchy has two (2) copies of the flick on DVD to give away to our readers. More on that below. Our own Ard caught Monstrum when it played at the Imagine Film Festival. You can find his full review here where he tries his very best not to give away the whole film. In a coupel excerpts you can get the gist of it though. There are fights, explosions, and there are even a fart joke or two thrown in. Monstrum is very silly, very gory, and as long as you put your brain on "entertainment mode"... Full details...

There is no struggle more classic than man versus beast. More specifically, there’s no story more timeless than the battles of heroes and monsters. Literature, legend, and, of course, cinema love a good creature feature. Monstrum is a return to form and hits all the notes of a great monster movie, with a sophisticated edge that keeps the entire film refreshing and exciting.
In the 16th century, a time of political unrest and fear, a plague is wiping out the villagers on Mount Inwangsan. Rumors begin to spread of a vicious monster that is responsible for bringing the plague and slaughtering entire villages. In response, the King calls his most trusted general and a band of heroes out of retirement to get to the bottom of things. They will discover that the real threat may not simply be the beast itself… but something much more sinister.

Tae Gun-ho (Jeong Jae-yeong) is a badass in the classic tough guy vein. Watching him in South Korean director Huh Jong-ho’s thriller “Countdown”, you can’t help but be reminded of guys like Steve McQueen or Jack Lord. He wears straight, simple suits, doesn’t say much, and doesn’t get traditionally angry, but he’ll take you down regardless. And the man can certainly fight with a high-powered tazer. The very first scene in “Countdown” gives you a good idea of Tae’s personality. He works for a collection agency, he’s their best man; in fact he’s the only competent agent they have. Capable of getting any debt from anyone, he stops at nothing. A man whose car Tae is repossessing douses himself in diesel fuel, but doesn’t have a source of fire. Tae nonchalantly lights a cigarette and offers the man his own lighter,...

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

Festival season heading your way out there in the dark. Even if you only experience film festivals through blog mania for the same, that's still something. That's how most of us experience Cannes each year, yes? This year Tfe will be doing a lot from Nyff as it's close to home (5 stops on the subway close!) and quite inexpensive since there's already a bed to sleep in: one's own! But we have lined up a few foreign correspondents to give you bits and bobs from Venice (Aug 31st-Sept 10th), Toronto (Sept 8th-18th), and London (Oct 12th-27th). Quite often commenting is light on film festival pieces, which one assumes is because of the unfamiliar factor of the films, though sometimes it's quite distressing -- I even drew you cartoons from Nashville and there was nary a peep! -- so some feedback would be greatly appreciated:

News is rolling out of Toronto for this year's festival, with the Galas and the Special Presentations sections announced. As always with Tiff, the sheer number of films can seem overwhelming, but with new films by David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method, pictured above), Terence Davies (!), Francis Ford Coppola, Wang Xiaoshuai, Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, and William Friedkin added to big names that premiered already this year (including Almodóvar, Von Trier, Nanni Moretti, and Nicolas Winding Refn) it looks like the 2011 iteration will be as packed with must-see cinema as ever before. We'll be updating this listing as new lineups are announced. See Tiff's official website for details.

Making its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, the South Korean thriller Countdown has just received a trailer from Twitch. Not only is this playing in the Special Presentations category, but it’s also writer and director Huh Jong-ho‘s debut. I probably don’t need to tell you this, but having your first movie premiere in a category such as that is a pretty good sign for both you and what you’ve made.
Unfortunately, the trailer for the movie is lacking those rather important subtitles, which us non-Koreans sort of require. I could… kind of pick up on what was going on here through the preview’s editing and selected moments, but the plot points that this communicated were lost on me. If you do watch it, you should know that it’s described as being about “a beautiful ex-con who, after being released from prison,...

Is Korea's Huh Jong-ho the next Kim Ji-woon? There are enough moments in the teaser for his upcoming Countdown that recall Kim's A Bittersweet Life to raise the possibility and the fact that the film was selected to the Toronto International Film Festival's prestigious Special Presentations program despite being a debut is quite a ringing endorsement. Tiff describes it this way:Jeon Do-youn plays a beautiful ex-con who, after being released from prison, tries to make some quick cash by manipulating a heartless debt collector.Con artist versus collector? There's a lot to like there. And even more to like in the teaser below....

If you're more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer's glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually Tiff features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries. Below you'll find rundowns on the new films from George Clooney, Bennett Miller, Jay & Mark Duplass, Todd Solondz, Francis Ford Coppola, Cameron Crowe, Sarah Polley, Fernando Meirelles, Lars von Trier, Marc Forster, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Lynne Ramsay. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. This is quite the list -- there are easily thirty films here that could be potential top ten for 2011 candidates,...

It looks like we're in for another great year at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I'm excited to be just a little bit closer to the action this time around. The very first titles from the 2011 fest were announced today, and there were definitely a lot of familiar faces among the 10 Galas and 43 Special Presentations. George Clooney is back with two films this year (The Ides of March and The Descendants) and many other Tiff alumni are returning with their latest works including David Cronenberg (A Dangerous Method), Lars Von Trier (Melancholia), Todd Solondz (Dark Horse), Fernando Meirelles (360), Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive), Steve McQueen (Shame), Pedro Almodóvar (The Skin I Live In), Michael Winterbottom (Trishna) and Sarah Polley (Take This Waltz). Both Moneyball and 50/50 fill the requisite "big September release with awards potential" slots, while Roland Emmerich's Anonymous was a bit of a surprise pick. However, for the first time ever,...

Tiff's co-directors Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling have got us salivating with the smorgasbord list of world premiere offerings for next September. Opening film comes as a surprise, as we've haven't heard much about it, but seeing that doc filmmaker Davis Guggenheim has a great relationship with the festival, From The Sky Down a doc about U2 (20 or so years after Phil Joanou's U2: Rattle & Hum) will take centre stage. Doc-programmer guru Thom Powers makes sure that the fest will be a rocking good edition by also adding Pearl Jam Twenty from fanboy Cameron Crowe. Before we get into the announcements, we can quickly take a look at titles that weren't mentioned. Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar (Nyff?) Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret (got no clue), Alps, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights (venice-bound, might be announced later), Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady (Weinsteins release it in December,...

The 2011 Toronto Film Festival has unveiled the first part of its slate, and announced that the Davis Guggenheim-directed U2 documentary From The Sky Down will open the festival, which will run from Sept. 8-18. Aside from the promise of Bono and The Edge, there is plenty of starpower at the fest with its glitzy list of premieres. Not mentioned is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I've heard this one might be the opening-night film of The New York Festival, which last year provided a strong Oscar-season launch platform for The Social Network. Might that be why it's missing from the Tiff list? Here is the official announcement of the gala premieres that the festival has locked: Toronto – Now in its 36th year, the Toronto International Film Festival® today unveiled a selection of films in the 2011 Galas and Special Presentations programmes. The selection comprises 10 Galas and 43 Special Presentations, including 31 World Premieres.

I know next to nothing about this South Korean suspense fllck save for this sentence I found hiding out over at the Film Smash message board: “A man chases down the woman who holds the key to keep his heart beating.” Is it literal or figurative? Who knows! Director Huh Jong-ho’s “Countdown”, which stars Jeong Jae-yeong and Jeon Do-yeon, is being described as “21 Grams” meets “Taken”, a comparison that is both intriguing and a little strange. In order to help get you excited about the upcoming project, a pair of character posters have been released, both of which have been embedded below. Take a gander if you’ve got a minute. As soon as more information about the film becomes available, we’ll be all over it. Source: Film Smash...
