She earned her Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1957 where she studied with Vladimir Nabokov. She earned her Master's degree in playwriting and dramatic literature from Yale University Drama School in 1960 in New Haven, Connecticut.
She was awarded a Hugo Award in 1983 for "Souls" novella. She was also awarded a Nebula Award in 1972 for "When It Changed.".
