It's been a real "good news, bad news" kind of week to be a fan of Prime Video spin-off series based on bestselling books. Just yesterday, we learned that Amazon's Jack Reacher adaptation Reacher is getting a new offshoot centred around Maria Sten's fan favourite character Frances Neagley (Yay!). Now today brings with it the sad news that the streamer's Bosch continuation, Bosch: Legacy, is being, well, boshed. As reported by Deadline, the Titus Welliver starring series will conclude its run with a third and final season this coming March.

A favourite of fans and critics alike, the original Bosch series — in which Welliver played the titular cop with an anti-authority streak — ran for seven seasons, adapting various plot strands from across author Michael Connelly's 24 source novels. Such was its popularity that, within a year of the main show ending, Legacy had already been commissioned and a first season released.

Harry Bosch is about to work his last case at Amazon.

Author Michael Connelly, creator of the character and an executive producer of Bosch: Legacy, announced on Instagram Friday that the series will end with its forthcoming third season. That season is slated to premiere in March 2025.

“I’m happy to announce that the third season of Bosch: Legacy will premiere on Prime [Video] in March. I think it’s our best yet,” Connelly wrote. “It will also be the last season, bringing to a fitting close a 10 season run with this character, played so well by Titus Welliver. But fear not, we are currently in production on the Renée Ballard show. And if you know anything about my books, then you know you have not seen the last of Harry Bosch!”

When Bosch ended its run on Prime Video, we didn't anticipate it would lead to a full-fledged franchise.

The latest series to enter development focuses on Detective Renée Ballard, who is tasked with running the LAPD's new cold case division.

The division is "a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest caseload in the city," Prime Video states in the series' description.

The Bosch universe is expanding further. Prime Video has given a 10-episode series order to the Untitled Renée Ballard project, a Bosch spinoff about the LAPD’s Cold Case Division.

The newly greenlighted series is one of two projects inspired by the work of bestselling author Michael Connelly that has been in the works at Amazon MGM Studios since February. The other, the Untitled J. Edgar project, remains in development. It follows Harry Bosch’s former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, who is tapped for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami.

The Untitled Renée Ballard project is centered around a character that has not appeared on the two Bosch series to date. Yet, for Raju, the long-running Bosch franchise holds a unique place in his career that’s a bit different from his previous gigs. In an upcoming episode of Bosch: Legacy Season Two, private investigator Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver) asks a favor of a couple of colleagues from his days as an LAPD homicide detective. Their exchange is terse and extremely one-sided in favor of the self-righteous Bosch. As he walks away, Christina Vega (Jacqueline Obradors) mutters, “Same old Bosch.”

“Same old Bosch” might as well be the actual title of Bosch: Legacy, which is among the least spinoff-y of spinoffs ever made(*). It brings back the hero of Bosch as its main character.

Harry Bosch will tackle his most personal case yet in Bosch: Legacy Season 2. The Amazon Freevee series returns on Oct. 20, picking up after the cliffhanger season 1 ending that saw Harry’s daughter (and rookie cop) Maddie apparently kidnapped by the screen-cutter rapist.

"The Walking Dead" ended in 2022, but it already has more spin-offs than you can shake a stick at. Following the release of "Fear The Walking Dead" and "The Walking Dead: Dead City," fans have been looking forward to "The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon." The show will be set in Europe, following former redneck ne'er-do-well Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), the only principal actor returning from the original cast.

"The Walking Dead" originated as a comic book series created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore. The story follows an ever-dwindling group of survivors in a zombie apocalypse, moving from place to place in search of a safe refuge from the undead "walkers," and also the numerous human dangers they encounter along the way. It made for an often exhilarating (if often frustrating) series that could sometimes feel unfocused and patchy, but Reedus' laconic performance ensured he emerged as a fan favorite.

Harry Bosch is back on Amazon Freevee, and he’s a man on a mission. ‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 2 picks up after last season’s cliffhanger

Bosch: Legacy’s first season ended on a major cliffhanger when rookie LAPD officer Maddie (Madison Lintz) was kidnapped by a masked assailant – presumably the infamous screen-cutter rapist. Season 2 will pick up after that event as retired cop turned Pi Harry (Titus Welliver) hunts down the man who took his only child.

“Maddie’s been taken,” he says in the first teaser for the new season (via YouTube). “Tell me what I’m supposed to do.

“Where’s my daughter?” That’s all Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) wants to know when his Freevee series returns. Bosch: Legacy Season 2 will premiere on Friday, October 20, with the first four episodes. The rest of the season will roll out with two episodes weekly on Fridays, with the finale on November 10. Harry Bosch is returning to Amazon Freevee on Oct. 20 – and he’s taking matters into his own hands to save his daughter in a new teaser for “Bosch: Legacy” Season 2.

The drama series’ second season finds Bosch (Titus Welliver) working alongside Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) to track down a masked assailant who kidnapped his daughter Maddie (Madison Lintz) before time runs out. But as the FBI scrutinizes Carl Rogers’ murder, Bosch and Chandler are placed under suspicion.

In the clip, Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector) tells Bosch that he needs to let authorities do their job to find his daughter, to which he replies: “Don’t cut me out!.” He also makes clear that while the FBI has to do things the “right way,” those rules don’t apply to him.

Bosch: Legacy is returning for its second season later this year. Amazon Freevee has released the first photos for season two of the Bosch sequel series and revealed more about the new character Anthony Michael Hall will play in the drama. Amazon is betting big on Harry Bosch. Freevee has renewed the Bosch spinoff Bosch: Legacy for season 3. The news comes months ahead of the show’s upcoming season 2 premiere in fall 2023.

Bosch aired for seven seasons on Prime Video and starred Titus Welliver as LAPD detective Harry Bosch. The gruff but principled Harry approached each of his complex cases with the same motto in mind: Everybody counts or nobody counts. That show ended in 2021, but a spinoff, Bosch: Legacy, premiered in 2022. Welliver reprised his role as Harry, who is working as a private detective following his retirement from the police department.

During the second season, Bosch and Chandler work together to seek out a killer who just might find them first. The flagship series from Michael Connelly, writer and executive producer, ran for seven seasons on Amazon proper and starred Welliver as Bosch.

According to Amazon, which announced the pickup as part of its NewFront presentation on Monday, the first season of Bosch: Legacy (which streamed in May 2022) “built on the loyal fan base of the original series and enticed new audiences,” delivering a “higher number of viewers than any previous season of Bosch” (which of course streamed on Prime Video proper).
