Along Came The Devil – Review

Review by Mathew Lowery

Movies about the devil and demonic possession are certainly nothing new. Ever since classics like Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, there have been countless movies made dealing with demons, exorcisms, or the paranormal in general. Some more recent favorites include Insidious, Sinister, and The Conjuring. But then, there are movies like Jason DeVan’s Along Came The Devil, which tries to go toe-to-toe with many other demon possession movies that have come before. Unfortunately, not only does this film take elements from other and much better movies, but it doesn’t offer anything new or use those old ideas in a unique way.

The plot is pretty straightforward, but it can also be somewhat confusing, and I’ll explain why. The movie follows a teen girl named Ashley, played by Sydney Sweeney, whose mother disappeared when she was young and was abused by her father.

Film Review: ‘Along Came the Devil’

Film Review: ‘Along Came the Devil’
The budget may be low, but the level of scares and imagination are lower still in “Along Came the Devil,” a feeble indie horror film that sometimes seems like a straight retread and other times feels like a movie aimed specifically at Christian audiences. Either way, it creaks more than it creeps, to the extent that various scenes appear to be missing from director Jason DeVan’s disjointed debut. Uninspired and increasingly silly, the Atlanta-shot movie will strike most genre fans as overly derivative, while the moderate amount of cursing and gore (however unconvincing) will nevertheless be more than faith-based-entertainment seekers typically find palatable. Gravitas Ventures is giving the picture a limited theatrical launch Aug. 10, simultaneous with on-demand/digital HD release.

Warning bells go off immediately as the film starts with far too much explanatory text, a ham-fisted childhood flashback and the de rigueur claim: “Based on true events”.

Ten years later,

Inspired by true events, Along Came the Devil stars Sydney Sweeney as a woman who is sent to live with her estranged Aunt Tanya. While there, she starts to contact the spirit world after having visions of her dead mother and she unleashes a great evil. The full cast includes Jessica Barth, Matt Dallas, Madison Lintz, Heather DeVan, and Bruce Davison. ‘Bosch’ Boss Discusses Eleanor’s Big Scene and What’s Coming in Season 5

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Bosch” Season 4.]

The life of a homicide detective is not an easy one, but Det. Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver) has been tested even more than usual this season on his eponymous Amazon series. As the lead on a task force investigating the murder of a high-profile attorney on Los Angeles’ Angels Flight railcar, Bosch has to contend with public perception, a shady police commission chief, and possible corruption inside the Lapd.

And while that’s all part of the job, Bosch’s own personal tragedies have also overlapped with cases this year. Our hero finally got closure for the cold case murder of his mother since that killer and the Angels Flight killer turned out to be one and the same. But the biggest blow came when Harry had to watch his ex-wife Eleanor (Sarah Clarke) get gunned down and die. In trying to bring her killers to justice,

‘Bosch’ Review: Amazon’s Unstoppable Cop Drama Elevates the Series With a Season 4 Shocker

In its fourth season, “Bosch” remains as good and solid as its namesake hero. The creation of author Michael Connelly, good ol’ Det. Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver) is a no-excuses cop who is haunted by his past, but you wouldn’t know it because he’s also incredibly businesslike. He’s not crippled by his obsessions nor addictions, he’s not a quirky savant with exceptional detecting skills, and he’s not in any way an obnoxious attention seeker.

Instead, his appeal is that he does his job without fanfare and as honestly and implacably as possible, while occasionally overextending himself. And so too does “Bosch” the series. It’s why it was Amazon’s top-watched original series for several years until “Sneaky Pete” sneaked in: “Bosch” is so reliable in how pure and straightforward it is that a series-altering event in the first half of the season is actually shocking when it happens.
