Born and raised in Valparaiso, Indiana,, Ron Podell remembers his first experience in a movie theater, watching a release of "Sleeping Beauty" with his Dad. The memory of the evil queen morphing into a giant dragon sticks with him to this day.
An award-winning professional journalist who has been telling stories since his high school newspaper days, Podell, to date. has written five feature screenplays and 15 short screenplays, three of which have been produced. His scripts have won more than 60 top awards at films festivals/screenwriting contests, along with too many nominations/script finalist statuses to count. His short script "All Tapped Out" was the recent grand prize winner of the American Gem Literary Festival and is expected to be produced sometime during 2019.
Podell is included in the book, titled "Top 50 Indie Writers in the World," that was released in early 2017 through Apple iTunes. He was named Writer of the Year at the 2016 Action on Film International Film Festival and was nominated for Writer of the Year at both the 2017 and 2018 Austin Revolution Film Festival. He won the first-ever James Christopher Scribe Award at the 2017 Bare Bones International Film and Music Festival. He has served as a screenwriter panelist at the Glendale International Film Festival, Sutter Creek Film Festival and the former Screenwriting Expo in Los Angeles.
He is a member of the WGAW Independent Writers Caucus and his feature script "Blood Trigger" is available in paperback and e-book on Amazon.
He received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Franklin College in Franklin, Ind., and has worked for newspapers in Indiana, Florida and Maryland, national newsletters in Washington, D.C., and at two institutions of higher education. He is a communications specialist at the University of Wyoming.
Other early childhood influences were the original "King Kong", "Casablanca", "The Wizard of Oz", Saturday night "Creature Features" and too many John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart movies to count.
As a young boy, he eventually graduated to such popcorn films as "Jaws", "Star Wars", and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Podell counts the first two "Godfather" films, "Rocky" and "Goodfellas" among his all-time favorites. He appreciates today's special-effects technology that can bring comic book stories to breathtaking life while simultaneously admiring the storytelling of movies during the 1970s.
Favorite recent screenplays in the past decade include "The Departed", "Juno" and "No Country for Old Men."
"However, Billy Wilder remains the master," Podell said.
Podell's ultimate career ambition is to produce a healthy balance of spec screenplays and works for hire for studios and production companies of actors and directors he admires.
