Los Angeles, Feb. 26, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (Netflix Presents A Double Dare You! Film/A Shadowmachine Production in association with The Jim Henson Company) won the Best Feature honor at the 50th Annie Awards celebration Saturday night on the campus of UCLA. Pinocchio also won for Best Character Animation, Feature (Tucker Barrie), Best Direction, Feature (Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafson), Best Music, Feature (Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, Guillermo del Toro, Patrick McHale) and Best Production Design, Feature (Curt Enderle, Guy Davis).

Best Independent Feature was presented to Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (Marcel the Movie LLC) which also won for Best Voice Acting, Feature (Jenny Slate as the voice of Marcel) and Best Writing, Feature (Dean Fleischer Camp, Jenny Slate, Nick Paley, Elisabeth Holm).

The 50th Annual Annie Awards from Asifa-Hollywood, honoring honor overall excellence in animation as well as individual achievement, were handed out in a ceremony February 25 at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” took home the Best Feature prize, as well as feature film awards for Best Character Animation, Best Direction, Best Music and Best Production Design. “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” was awarded Best Indie Feature, as well as Best Voice Acting for co-creator Jenny Slate and Best Writing — Feature.

In the TV categories, “Bob’s Burgers,” “Love Death + Robots,” and “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” all took home awards. See the full list of winners below.

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Wins Big at Annie Awards
“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was the big winner at the 50th annual Annie Awards, winning five categories in the award show that honors the best in animation. Fellow Oscar-nominees “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” won three and two awards, respectively.

“Pinocchio” led all films with nine nominations and went into the ceremony as a strong favorite to win the top award. The dark stop-motion take on the “Pinocchio” story also came into the ceremony at a time when its distributor, Netflix, has been dominating the Annies. Last year, its film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” was nominated in eight categories and won all eight, including Best Feature, while the eventual Oscar winner “Encanto” settled for three awards in categories in which “Mitchells” was not nominated. Two very different stop-motion films lead the way in nominations from Asifa-Hollywood: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio from Netflix and A24’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On drew up nine and eight noms, respectively, with Disney/Pixar’s Turning Red next with seven.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio took the first film award of the night, for Best Production Design, Feature.

Pinocchio and Turning Red will face off in the marquee Best Feature race against DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Netflix;s The Sea Beast and Wendell & Wild. Macel the Shell is vying for Best Indie Feature against Charlotte; Inu-Oh; Little Nicholas, Happy As Can Be; and My Father’s Dragon.

Inspired by true events where a woman was murdered by an Uber driver in China in 2018, “The Goddess” re-imagines the victim able to seek out revenge for the crime, confronting her assailant in the very taxi that the crime was committed.

“The Goddess” was approached as an emotional outlet of director Renkai Tan to deal with a horrific crime. As a result, the film does convey a sense of anger towards the perpetrator but also a scenario where the victim is allowed vengeance. While films based on crime released within close proximity to the events run the risk of being exploitative, Tan’s sincerity is conveyed in both his narrative and visual approach.

First project from the new venture, Screenworks Asia, is a sequel to hit Chinese-language drama series The Making Of An Ordinary Woman.

Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca) and Taiwanese distributor Catchplay are co-investing in a new venture, Screenworks Asia, to create Taiwanese content for international audiences.

According to a statement, the joint venture aims to increase the quantity and quality of Taiwanese film and TV content produced for international consumption, as well as “facilitate a platform for international collaboration, aiming to make Taiwan a powerhouse for Asian original content.”

Although filmed entirely in New York and in completely Us production, Ximan Li’s debut feature “In a New York Minute” qualifies for being considered as an Asian film based on its milieu: the Chinese diaspora in the Us. Think of last year’s global hit “Crazy Rich Asians”, but without the “crazy” and “rich” parts and “In a New York Minute” offers its patient viewers a glimpse into the world rarely seen in both Hollywood mainstream and indie movies. However, the film is also quite an American one and its world premiere took place at Newport Beach Film Festival. Some further festival exposure should ensue before the film hits the video-market, but chances for wide theatre distribution are quite slim.

Aacta unveils Best Asian Film nominees and Grand Jury

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) today announced the nine films nominated for this year’s Best Asian Film award.

This is the second year Aacta has presented the award, which forms the foundation for the organisation’s Asia International Engagement Program. The award is meant to recognise the calibre of films from the Asian region and their growing popularity in Australasia and around the world – Asian films have contributed $36 million to the Aussie box office in the last 12 months.

This year’s nominees are: Joon-Hwan Jang’s 1987 When the Day Comes (South Korea); Yang Ya-che’s The Bold, The Corrupt and the Beautiful (Taiwan); Muye Wen’s Dying to Survive (China); Dipesh Jain’s Gali Guleiyan (India); Amit V.
