Hooked Up Review

How is Hooked Up the first and only horror movie to be shot completely on an iPhone camera? I mean, we’re living in an age of found footage oversaturation that’s exploring every possible movie-viewing-medium, be it through watching a computer screen (Unfriended) or wearing concealed spy glasses (V/H/S), so the fact that there isn’t an Entire found-footage-iPhone movie in existence makes me think this stale subgenre may have some fresh vitality left. Unfortunately, none of that reinvigorated energy emerges throughout Hooked Up - an aggravating bit of bro-horror that’s built on a few cheap jump scares, disgusting dialogue delivered by unlikable leads, and a sloppily undercooked haunted house story that’s dropped like a bad cell call.

Pablo Larcuen’s hormone fueled sex-cation opens with the introduction of Hooked Up‘s two lead characters, Tonio (Jonah Ehrenreich) and Peter (Stephen Ohl). As Peter slouches over their apartment toilet,

‘Hooked Up’ Review

Stars: Jonah Ehrenreich, Júlia Molins, Stephen Ohl, Natascha Wiese | Written and Directed by Pablo Larcuen

A dark, loud, found footage horror film set in a Barcelona apartment block at night. No, not that one – with not a fireman in sight, on a lads’ holiday following a bad breakup, two awful young Americans hook up with girls in a bar and retire to a creepy old apartment block for sex. It’s all fun and games until someone ends up bleeding from the balls.

A film which starts out with one of its characters vomiting into a toilet for a good five minutes, Hooked Up is resolutely hard to like. Its two leads are a terrible pair, one being a borderline rapist, the other a violent creep who struggles to hold his booze and makes far too many hand gestures when he gets stressed. Tonio acts like Jay from The Inbetweeners

iPhone-Shot Horror Movie Hooked Up Takes Off With Raven Banner

You know, I really have to learn to act on my impulses. A couple of years ago I was talking with friends about how we should make a movie just using the iPhone as a camera. Well, we never did, but apparently the idea was pretty sound.

According to filmmaker Pablo Larcuen, his new flick Hooked Up is the first ever feature film shot entirely on an iPhone, and now Raven Banner has acquired world sales rights to the film, which premiered at last year’s Sitges.

Stephen Ohl, Jonah Ehrenreich, and Julia Molins star in the flick, which promises "Party, alcohol, sex & blood… in Barcelona!" Jaume Collet-Serra produces.

Synopsis

Two young friends from New York travel to Barcelona to get over the break up of one of them. But things won’t go as expected and they will end up trapped in a house where they will have to

Shot-On-iPhone Thriller, ‘Hooked Up’, Syncs Up With A Trailer

While I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first feature-length film shot using an iPhone, it definitely is one that is touting the acclaim with the backing of being selected at Stiges.

Hooked Up is being presented by Jaume Collet-Serra and directed by Pablo Larcuen, who previously directed the short My Invisible Friend, which played at Fantastic Fest 2010. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see that film so I cannot comment on Larcuen’s ability to make a film but the trailer will give you the strange sense of Déjà vu (look at V/H/S). Regardless, you might want to check out the trailer below.

Synopsis

Two young friends from New York travel to Barcelona to get over the break-up of one of them. But things won’t go as expected, and they will end up trapped in a house where they will have to fight an evil

Around two years ago we here at Dread Central were talking about using the iPhone to make a feature length horror movie. Since then there have been several. Pablo Larcuen's found footage flick Hooked Up will be playing at the Sitges Film Festival. Stephen Ohl, Jonah Ehrenreich, and Julia Molins star.

Synopsis

Two young friends from New York travel to Barcelona to get over the break-up of one of them. But things won’t go as expected, and they will end up trapped in a house where they will have to fight an evil girl and the evil inside them.
