Tribeca Film Festival: 9 Movies to Watch
The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off on Wednesday with a slate of movies from up-and-coming filmmakers and established directors that tackle hot-button issues such as gun violence, homophobia, and gender discrimination.

The annual celebration of film was originally founded by Robert De Niro and producer Jane Rosenthal to encourage people to return to a corner of Manhattan that was still reeling from the 9/11 attacks. Well, downtown is largely rebuilt, but the festival is still going strong, with a particular emphasis on inclusion and representation. Of the more than 100 features that will debut at this edition of Tribeca, 40% are directed by women, 29% by people of color and 13% by Lgbtq filmmakers.

Now in its 18th year, Tribeca has grown to encompass television series, shorts, gaming, and virtual reality. But it’s the indie movies that provide the biggest sizzle. Here’s a look at nine acquisition titles that could have buyers circling.

First Trailer for Dark Comedy 'The Professor' Starring Depp & DeWitt

"Are you alright?" "Well... no." Saban Films has debuted the official trailer for an indie drama titled The Professor, the second feature from writer/director Wayne Roberts (Katie Says Goodbye). Johnny Depp stars in this as a world-weary college professor diagnosed with a terminal illness who throws caution to the wind and indulges in numerous vices while attempting to live his life to the fullest. It's described as a dark comedy and has an impressive ensemble cast with Rosemarie DeWitt, Ron Livingston, Zoey Deutch, Danny Huston, Justine Warrington, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, Kaitlyn Bernard, Odessa Young, and Matreya Scarrwener. This seems like an odd role for Depp to take, but he's been staying out of the spotlight anyway, so why not an indie film. Just doesn't look that great. Tom and Jerry Movie Wants Peter Dinklage as the Villain?

Warner Bros. reportedly wants Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage to star in their upcoming Tom and Jerry movie. It's believed that the CGI and live-action hybrid will begin production this summer and Dinklage will certainly have some more time on his hands now that his hit HBO series is finished. However, he will more than likely have to do some press for Game of Thrones Season 8 throughout the summer, which could impede on the Tom & Jerry production.

It was previously revealed that Warner Bros. was eying Olivia Cooke for a starring role and they reportedly already met with Zoey Deutch. It is believed that the actresses are up for the part of Kayla, "who teams up with Tom to stop the pesky Jerry from ruining an important event for herself." Peter Dinklage is reportedly wanted for the role of Terrance, who is the antagonist, and Kayla's boss in the Tom & Jerry movie.
