Netflix Accused of Promoting Content by Targeting Viewers’ Race, but the Company Says That’s Impossible

Netflix is defending itself against accusations on social media that it targets viewers by using race to promote its various television series and film offerings. Stacia L. Brown, creator of the podcast “Rise of Charm City” and a writer with bylines at The Washington Post, Buzzfeed, Rolling Stone, and more, gained attention on Twitter after observing some films on Netflix being advertised to her with posters featuring black characters, even if the film predominantly starred a white cast.

Brown posted a photo of her Netflix account with the film poster for Lauren Miller Rogen’s comedy “Like Father,” which was released on the streaming platform over the summer. The movie stars Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer in the lead roles, with Seth Rogen, Paul W. Downs, and Zach Appelman in supporting roles, but Netflix promoted the film to Brown with a poster featuring black actors Leonard Ouzts and Blaire Brook.

Film Review: ‘Richard Says Goodbye’

  • Variety
Film Review: ‘Richard Says Goodbye’
It’s not as if there’s ever a particularly good time for rose-tinted character studies of morally dubious men, but even with that caveat in place, “Richard Says Goodbye” hasn’t exactly picked its moment. At a time when unresolved abuse allegations against Johnny Depp have placed his star image in flux, watching him play a college lecturer whose terminal cancer diagnosis sends him into a tailspin of social, sexual and professional misbehavior is an unavoidably discomfiting experience, however much gonzo gusto he brings to the part. Given more favorable circumstances, however, Wayne Roberts’ second feature would still be an unpalatable proposition, with its iffy sexual politics and a comic tone caught awkwardly between nihilistic irony and dewy-eyed sentiment. Saban Films and DirecTV have already secured U.S. rights to the film, which had it world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival; despite some theatrical play, “Richard” will primarily

Sierra Burgess's Mom Has 1 of Hollywood's Most Impressive Careers

  • BuzzSugar
Netflix's Sierra Burgess Is a Loser has a cast jam-packed with recognizable faces. Its leading lady, Shannon Purser, was one of the breakout stars of the streaming platform's Stranger Things, playing fan favorite Barb. The requisite dorky-jock-dreamboat, Jamey, is portrayed by the internet's current boyfriend, Noah Centineo, aka Peter Kavinsky of To All the Boys I've Loved Before. There's definitely one other member of the cast, though, who you'll recognize instantly: Sierra's mom, played by Lea Thompson.

Thompson has been working in Hollywood since the 1980s, when she made her movie debut in Jaws 3-D. She appeared in a few other '80s films, including the cult classic Red Dawn, until she landed the role she will probably always be associated with: Lorraine Baines McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy. With the help of aging makeup, Thompson portrayed protagonist Marty's (Michael J. Fox) mother as an adult

Johnny Depp’s Drama ‘Richard Says Goodbye’ Sold to Saban, DirecTV
North American rights to Johnny Depp’s drama “Richard Says Goodbye” have been sold to Saban Films and DirecTV for about $3 million with a 2019 theatrical release planned.

Depp portrays the titular Richard — a college professor who is given a life-changing diagnosis and then decides to throw all pretense and conventions to the wind and live his life as boldly and freely as possible. He smokes, drinks, has sex, and insults anyone who annoys him. The cast also includes Zoey Deutch and Rosemarie DeWitt.

CAA Media Finance brokered the deal. The film was screened in Toronto on Sept. 6, the opening day of the Toronto Film Festival, but was not part of the official festival lineup.

Wayne Roberts directed from his own script. The project was first announced last year at the Cannes Film Festival with Stuart Ford’s Im Global — which was subsequently acquired by the now-bankrupt Global Road — fully financing the project.
