‘Toni Erdmann’: Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner No Longer Writing the Paramount Remake
Former “Girls” collaborators Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner will not make their studio screenwriting debut with Paramount’s English-language take on “Toni Erdmann.” Last June, the duo was negotiating to adapt Maren Ade’s 2016 dramedy of the same name, which vied for the Palme d’Or and Best Foreign Language Film Oscar (Germany). However, co-producer Adam McKay told IndieWire that “it didn’t work out with them.”

Paramount confirmed that the new writers are Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, Oscar nominees for their “The Kids Are All Right” screenplay. Cholodenko, who directed that film, will also direct “Toni Erdmann.” “We just got our first draft of it,” said McKay.

He added that the project is “on track” and lead producer Jessica Elbaum — who conceptualized Gloria Sanchez Productions as the female-centric counterpart to McKay and Will Ferrell’s Gary Sanchez Productions — is “really happy” with the initial script, which now requires McKay’s notes.

‘First Ladies’: Netflix Film Casts Jennifer Aniston and Tig Notaro as Wives in the White House
Jennifer Aniston will play the first female and lesbian President of the United States in an upcoming Netflix film. Announced Friday, “First Ladies” is the brainchild of Tig Notaro and her wife/former “One Mississippi” co-star Stephanie Allynne. They are now at work on the script, and Notaro will star opposite the “Friends” Emmy-winner as Flotus.

“When Beverly and Kasey Nicholson move into the White House, they’ll prove that behind every great woman… is another great woman,” reads the political comedy’s official synopsis. Aniston, Notaro, and Allynne will all co-produce, along with Oscar-winning writer Adam McKay (“The Big Short”), his longtime Gary Sanchez Productions partner Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum (“Bachlorette”) and veteran Notaro collaborator Betsy Koch (“Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted”).

In 2013, Elbaum — Ferrell’s former assistant — came up with the idea for Gloria Sanchez Productions, a spinoff company created to tell women’s stories, which will oversee “First Ladies.

‘Succession’ Creators on How Murdoch, Redstone, Queen Elizabeth Informed HBO Drama

Several years ago, Jesse Armstrong wrote a screenplay titled “Murdoch” that imagined mogul Rupert Murdoch’s family gathering for his 78th birthday. The screenplay made the rounds in Hollywood, but was never produced.

Armstrong’s new HBO series, “Succession,” also tells the story of a powerful media executive whose children jockey for control of his empire as he approaches the end of his life. But speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday, Armstrong said that the two projects share little DNA.

“This is a fictional family,” Armstrong said, adding that he knows “a good deal” about the Murdoch family. In the writers room, he said, the Murdochs were discussed along with William Randolph Hearst, British press baron Robert Maxwell, and even Queen Elizabeth. “There’s loads of succession stories to draw on. We wanted to draw on all the good, rich stories there are about succession and about media and high politics.”

Armstrong’s fellow

Napa Valley Film Festival Rises After Fires Devastate Region

“During the first days, we only were hearing and fearing the worst,” says Marc Lhormer of unfounded rumors that partner wineries and hotels had been destroyed. “Brenda and I actually left our home and, living out of a suitcase for nine nights, kept moving things forward.”

He adds that two days after the fires erupted, the couple gathered their team. “We went around the room asking if everyone, and their families and loved ones, was Ok, and we discussed how we could help each other. Then, we had to determine if we were all mentally and physically up for putting on the show, a show everyone had worked so hard on, full time, all
