Olivia Sophie van Leeuwen is a partner at HALAL and head of the documentary film department. HALAL is an established Amsterdam based film production company & photography agency with a big creative team, connected to people and networks all across the world. HALAL has four partners and is divided into four departments: photography, commercial, film and documentary.
HALAL non-scripted is spearheaded by Olivia Sophie van Leeuwen, an EAVE and Eurodoc graduate and with a media studies master's degree at the University of Amsterdam and the New York University Tisch School of the Arts on her back. Boasting with artistic value, HALAL's non-scripted work aims to deliver documentaries that surprise, inspire and inform. The work is generally recognized by challenging the norm, either in its approach or form.
Her main focus is to expand HALAL Docs' international portfolio and effectively attract and cultivate top talent to help create the greatest quality documentary films with high artistic value. Olivia works closely with directors to transform ideas into reality. Concentrating on a select number of documentary filmmakers with a distinctive personal signature, the focus is on content and artistic value. Olivia is a strong advocate for being involved in every aspect and part of a project and makes this her number one priority in order to achieve the highest potential of any idea.
This quality has not gone unnoticed; the work has premiered and toured globally at A-list festivals and been part of prestigious international competitions. Hallmark productions include 'Genderblend' (2017), 'Independent Boy' (2017), 'KEEPER' (2019), 'King of the Cruise' (2019) and 'Drama Girl' (2020), many of which have caught the attention of globally recognized outfits such as UK's leading documentary distribution and sales company Dogwoof. Olivia was mentioned as top talent filmmakers in Screen Daily early this year.
