Mini Bio (1)

Lucien Bourjeily is a Lebanese writer and director of both theater and film. His extensive work in avant-garde theatre has traveled the worldwide festival circuit and his debut feature-length film "Heaven Without People" won the Special Jury Prize award at the 2017 Dubai IFF. A Fulbright scholar he holds an MFA in Filmmaking from the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles (2013).

In 2012, he was chosen by CNN as one of 8 leading cultural lights from Lebanon's contemporary arts scene that are making an impact in Lebanon and internationally. For his activism against censorship on the arts in Lebanon he was nominated for the 2014 "Freedom of Expression" award held annually at the Barbican Center in London by Index on Censorship.
He won the Special Jury Prize at the 2017 Dubai International Film Festival for his debut feature length film "Heaven Without People".

Theatre has so many competitors, it's no longer enough to see and hear a play. You want to be able to touch and smell it, too.
Censorship constrains art and limits its impact as much as it does with all free thought. Therefore, even if censorship might encourage creative ways to circumvent it, it still slows down progress and our ability to realize our full creative potential. And that is why I vehemently fight against it.
