Tiff 2018: ‘Destroyer’ Review: Dir. Karyn Kusama (2018)

Destroyer review: Nicole Kidman explodes onto the screen at the 2018 fall movie festivals in a role that is almost a dead cert to land her a nomination. Away from the jaw-dropping make-up, or lack thereof and the unkempt hair lies a performance that may just rank amongst the best she’s ever delivered.

It’s present-day Los Angeles, Kidman in the role of Erin Bell, a hardened detective first seen on screen clambering from her parked vehicle next to the La river, her obvious place of rest for the night. Is she drunk, hungover, on drugs – all of the above – perhaps – but she’s obviously struggling from some inner torment. It’s also clear that this isn’t the first time this has happened either. She’s seen attending a crime scene; what appears to be a gang member’s fatal shooting on the banks of the dry river, just hours after it has occurred.

Telluride Film Review: Nicole Kidman in ‘Destroyer’

  • Variety
Telluride Film Review: Nicole Kidman in ‘Destroyer’
Nothing Nicole Kidman has done in her career can prepare you for “Destroyer” — to the extent it’s easy to imagine someone wandering/tuning in to the film and watching for several minutes before realizing that the sunburnt piece of beef jerky up on screen is none other than the alabaster beauty from “BMX Bandits” and “Far and Away.” And that’s just the surface. “Destroyer” may as well be called “Nasty Woman: The Movie,” so committed is it to the idea of presenting a Don Siegel-style anti-hero who’s dirtier than Harry, deadlier than “The Killers.”

Going from fresh-faced FBI cadet to what looks like a roadie for the Rolling Stones, this is a transformation on par with Charlize Theron in “Monster” — not just in appearance, but in terms of her entire persona: the way her eyes move, like those of a skittish animal scanning the horizon for

‘Destroyer’ Review: Nicole Kidman Takes No Prisoners as a Badass Detective in Karyn Kusama’s Twisty L.A. Noir — Telluride

‘Destroyer’ Review: Nicole Kidman Takes No Prisoners as a Badass Detective in Karyn Kusama’s Twisty L.A. Noir — Telluride
Nicole Kidman is at the center of every scene in “Destroyer” and she becomes progressively more badass as it moves along. As Los Angeles detective Erin Bell, she’s broken, angry, and hellbent on revenge from the very first frame. The rest of the movie explains how she got that way, but Karyn Kusama’s fiery L.A. noir doesn’t need much backstory for Kidman’s attitude to register as genuine. For the first time since her gritty boxing drama “Girlfight” launched Michelle Rodriguez nearly 20 years ago, the filmmaker has delivered a movie propelled by the ceaseless energy of a woman wrestling to take control of her circumstances, no matter the physical toll.

Erin cuts an emaciated figure; her eyes are baggy and purpled as she squints under the desert sun and limps toward a crime scene in the opening moments. There’s no telling what she’ll do

First Look At Nicole Kidman As Erin Bell In ‘Destroyer’

Here’s a first-look image of a virtually unrecognisable Nicole Kidman in a new film called Destroyer, which will premiere at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. Kidman will play the role of Erin Bell, an Lapd detective haunted by her past.

Sebastian Stan, Toby Kebbell, Tatiana Maslany, Bradley Whitford, Jade Pettyjohn, and Scoot McNairy are also amongst the cast. Karyn Kusama directs.

Destroyer follows the moral and existential odyssey of Lapd detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.

Destroyer will debut at Tiff in September before rolling out to cinemas in the U.S. in

‘Kansas City’: Andrew Caldwell, Jade Pettyjohn & Anthony Keyvan Cast In Hulu Comedy Pilot

  • Deadline
‘Kansas City’: Andrew Caldwell, Jade Pettyjohn & Anthony Keyvan Cast In Hulu Comedy Pilot
Andrew Caldwell (iZombie), Jade Pettyjohn (School of Rock) and Anthony Keyvan (Fresh Off The Boat) are set as series regulars opposite John Slattery, Rafe Spall and Allison Tollman in Hulu’s political, dystopian half-hour comedy pilot Kansas City, from Amblin TV and Sony Pictures TV.

Set in Kansas City, the single-camera project, which has yet to get a formal pilot greenlight but already is in production, was written by Zev Borow (Lethal Weapon), with Rhys Thomas (Comrade Detective) set to direct.

Kansas City is set in a future where the city is separated by a wall between liberals and conservatives. Absurd misinformation and enmity rage as the two cities aim to undermine each other. In West Kansas City, political heavyweight Ellis Brookmeyer (Slattery) holds sway. His former son-in-law, Ben Graham (Spall), lives in East K.C. and yearns to be reunited with his daughter Clarissa. To accomplish this Ben gets involved with an East K.C. intelligence operation, with consequences he can not predict, let alone control.

Caldwell will play Seth, the top-selling hot tub, spa tub, and home sauna salesmen in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. He is also an operative for the East Kansas City Intelligence Service.

Pettyjohn’s Clarissa is a high school sophomore, church-goer, and aspiring jazz singer, who feels close to all the members of her family regardless of which side of the wall they call home.

Keyvan is Jamaal, a 16-year-old who recently moved to West Kansas City from Chicago, another country, literally. Clarissa (Pettyjohn) befriends him and the two expand each other’s worldview in ways neither thought possible.

Caldwell recurred as Harley Jones on the CW’s iZombie and recently guest-starred on Netflix’s American Vandal, among other credits. He’s repped by Artists First and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.

Pettyjohn will next appear alongside Nicole Kidman in feature Destroyer and Laura Dern in Trial By Fire, both set for a fall release. On TV, she was most recently seen as Summer Hathaway in Nick’s School of Rock. Pettyjohn is repped by Innovative Artists and manager Karen Renna.

Keyvan’s recent TV credits include Alexa & Katie, Major Crimes and Fresh Off The Boat, among others. He’s repped by Coast to Coast Entertainment, Protégé Entertainment and Meyer & Downs.
