Bo Burnham’s Teen Dramedy ‘Gay Kid and Fat Chick’ Moves Ahead at Paramount Players

Paramount Players is moving ahead with Bo Burnham’s teen comedy-drama “Gay Kid and Fat Chick,” hiring TV director Amy York Rubin to helm.

The project has been in development at Paramount since 2013, when it acquired Burnham’s script, which made the Black List of best unproduced screenplays that year. Burnham is also producing.

The story centers two high school outcasts, Maggie and Alex, who decide to bring justice to victims of torment and bullying by dressing up as “The Beaver” and “Gold Bitch,” and violently punishing whoever is accused of bullying their classmates. Maggie is the goalie of women’s field hockey team and Alex cheers for her as the school’s mascot, a beaver.

Paramount Players launched last June to ramp up production of movies derived from Viacom brands such as MTV and Nickelodeon. It’s developing an array of projects, including a big-screen adaptation of “Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Paramount Players to Develop Family Comedy ‘Playing With Fire’ (Exclusive)

Paramount Players will develop Dan Ewen’s family comedy “Playing With Fire,” and has set up the film with Todd Garner and Sean Robins at Broken Road Productions.

The studio has bought Ewen’s spec script and hired Matt Lieberman to pen a rewrite. The story, which was developed at Broken Road, revolves around a group of rugged wildfire fighters who meet their match when they rescue a trio of rambunctious children.

Executive VP Matt Dines is overseeing “Playing With Fire” for Paramount.

Trap Music Pioneer Gucci Mane Is Getting a Biopic from Paramount

Paramount Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are teaming up to produce a Gucci Mane Biopic based on the life of the rapper and trap music pioneer. The studio acquired the life rights to Gucci Mane, along with the rights to his 2017 book The Autobiography of Gucci Mane, which the rapper (real name Radric Delantic Davis) wrote with Neil Martinez-Belkin. The adaptation will be produced through the studio's new Paramount Players division, although there is no writer or director attached to this biopic at this time.

Gucci Mane was one of several Atlanta-area rappers who helped popularize the rap sub-genre known as trap music, with the term "trap" referring to the spots where drug deals take place. This style of music often features bleak lyrical content referring to life on the street, violence, poverty and other urban themes. Gucci Mane Biopic in the Works at Paramount Players, Imagine

Paramount Players and Imagine Entertainment have launched development of a biopic on musician Gucci Mane based on his “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.”

The studio has obtained life rights to Mane, whose real name is Radric Delantic Davis, and movie rights to the book. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will produce the project. Mane and Todd Moskowitz will executive produce.

Mane is a pioneer of the hip-hop genre known as trap music. He made his studio album debut in 2005 with “Trap House,” the first of a dozen studio albums, followed by “Hard to Kill.”

The book tells of his childhood in poverty in Alabama and his move to Atlanta, where he became involved in criminal activity. He spent nearly three years in prison starting in 2004 after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. While incarcerated, he began releasing mixtapes from prison with rappers Migos and Young Thug.

Paramount Pictures is teaming up with Imagine Entertainment, which produces the music industry show Empire and was behind the Eminem movie 8 Mile, to adapt The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.

The studio has retained the life rights to Mane, whose real name is Radric Delantic Davis, as well as the movie rights to the book, with the adaptation to be made via the Paramount Players arm.

Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins will produce the project with Mane and Todd Moskowitz acting as executive producer.

Apple unveiled its charts ranking the most popular movies, TV shows, music, apps, books and podcasts in the U.S. for 2017 — with both new and familiar faces in the world of media and entertainment.

The No. 1 movie of the year on Apple’s iTunes was Disney’s “Moana,” followed by Disney/Lucafilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Warner Bros. “Wonder Woman.”

In TV, perennial favorites HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” were the top three programs. New series charting in 2017 included HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” NBC’s “This Is Us,” PBS’s “Victoria” and FX’s “The Americans.”
