In the 2000s, Studio Bones twice transmuted Hiromu Arakawa's manga "Fullmetal Alchemist" into anime. The second series, "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood," is more faithful to the source material (it helps when you have the whole story to adapt). That said, it makes changes too. Much more subtle changes than the 2003 "Fullmetal Alchemist" series, but changes nonetheless, from creating new villains to condensing the story. In particular, "Brotherhood" crams volume 15 of the manga — one of its most impactful arcs — into episode 30: "The Ishvalan War of Extermination."
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is set in a steampunk version of 1900s Europe where alchemy is a real science. The main setting is Amestris, an expansive imperial state at war on all sides and ruled by a military dictatorship from within. Alchemists can become State Alchemists ("dogs of the military") to receive grant funding in exchange for answering a call to arms when requested.

In the early 1970s, a period marked by a surge in experimental cinema and the emergence of new cinematic voices, Chilean-French filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky embarked on an ambitious project that would challenge the conventions of traditional filmmaking. This was a time when filmmakers were pushing the boundaries of narrative and visual storytelling, experimenting with new techniques and themes. Jodorowsky, with his unique blend of surrealism and mysticism, was at the forefront of this movement. His goal was to adapt Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction novel, Dune, into a film.
Jodorowsky is known for his avant-garde and surrealist style, which is evident in his body of work. In addition to his ambitions for Dune, he has directed several other films, each a testament to his unique artistic vision. These include El Topo (1970), a surreal western that is considered a classic of the acid western genre; The Holy Mountain (1973), a spiritual...

"As Above, So Below" is one of the better found-footage horror films to emerge in the wake of the one-two punch that was "Cloverfield" in 2008 and "Paranormal Activity" in 2009. Where many of its peers struggled to put a fresh spin on the subgenre's tropes, the Dowdle Brothers' 2014 flick is a pulpy Indiana Jones-lite action-adventure that cleverly incorporates mythical elements like the philosopher's stone -- or, as we uncultured Yanks call it, the sorcerer's stone -- and the Nine Circles of Hell from Dante Alighieri's epic 14th-century poem "Divine Comedy." Admittedly, it doesn't go so far as to reinvent the found-footage wheel, nor does it overcome some of the format's worst tendencies. But it does breathe a little more life into that formula, especially when the action inevitably devolves into people incessantly shaking the camera as they run screaming for their lives.
Of course, the biggest weapon in the film's arsenal is its setting.

DC Studios is already radically reshaping the DC Universe, with each passing day seeming to yield further news about what's to come. While more plans will soon be revealed from James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are heading up this new division of Warner Bros. Discovery, in the interim, DC's future seems somewhat uncertain. "Wonder Woman 3" is no longer definitely happening, at least not with Patty Jenkins, and Henry Cavill might return, but it won't be as Superman. Gunn and Safran appear to be leaving all vestiges of the Snyderverse behind (though that doesn't mean the remaining unreleased films should be ignored).
As a longtime fan of Gunn's work who has never been particularly fond of Snyder's reimagining of DC's heroes, I'm pretty excited to see what's coming down the line. We already know there's a new Man of Steel on the way, and while I'm sure we'll be getting more reboots as well,...

Following the Wizarding World Universe canon seems to be a complicated thing, especially when the author of said universe is constantly changing it. The last film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald seemed to throw out everything audiences knew about the history of the Harry Potter universe and created a mess as a result. Though there are still a lot of canonical problems, The Secrets of Dumbledore does try to right some wrongs by finally answering questions lingering for fans—including about Credence’s (Eza Miller) family history, Queenie’s (Alison Sudol) sudden heel turn, and who is Jessica Williams’ character we randomly saw instructing the immortal wizard Nicolas Flamel in the last movie?
Set prior to the events of World War II, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore finds Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Grindelwald (now Mads Mikkelsen) attempting to mediate Grindelwald’s plans to overthrow the Muggle world.

When it comes to the Fantastic Beasts franchise, some of the most exciting moments come from the connections to the Harry Potter books. Luckily for us diehard fans, The Crimes of Grindelwald delivers a hefty dose of nostalgia. This movie has everything: we've got Voldemort's dear Nagini, a young professor McGonagall, and even a vaguely gay Dumbledore. But, that's not all! There's another character in the film that hearkens all the way back to the very first book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's Nicolas Flamel.
If you don't quite recall the significance of the character, it's because Nicolas Flamel is only mentioned in passing during the book. During one scene, Hermione points out a book passage for Harry and Ron to read:
"The ancient study of alchemy is concerned with making the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary substance with astonishing powers. The Stone will...

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald introduces us to a plethora of new characters and backstories that play important roles in the overall plot of the magical franchise. While there are a lot of characters whose journeys lead to some very interesting discoveries that we definitely want to explore Asap, there's one character whose brief appearance has us excited for the next Fantastic Beasts installment: Jessica Williams as Professor Eulalie (Lally) Hicks of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Williams joined J.K. Rowling at one of the performances of NYC's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, and the author celebrated the occasion with a photo of the two of them captioned by some illuminating information: "Professor Eulalie (Lally) Hicks of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with some random woman during the interval of #CursedChildNYC," she wrote.

As it builds the wizarding world, the Fantastic Beasts franchise has relied heavily on the fan momentum of the Harry Potter series. That's why the latest installation, The Crimes of Grindelwald, tickled Potterheads with references to Nicolas Flamel, Professor McGonagall (perhaps anachronistically), and even Lord Voldemort's snake Nagini. Still, the franchise has somewhat glazed over one of the key objects in the Harry Potter universe that's actually pretty important during Grindelwald's rise to power: the elder wand. Where the heck does the elder wand come from at the beginning of The Crimes of Grindelwald after being Mia during the first movie?
As Harry Potter lore has it, a young and power-hungry Grindelwald steals the elder wand from wandmaker Mykew Gregorovitch shortly before stunning him. Grindelwald is in his mid-40s when the Fantastic Beasts franchise begins, so we can assume he's had it for a while, but we don't see...

True Potterheads know that the magical world has never been short on tragic drama or the portrayal of grayness between good and evil. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, there's a mysterious wizard who embodies both so deeply, someone who acts by his own set of rules and motivations as Grindelwald's rise calls for people to choose sides. Enter Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam). At first glance, he appears to be a French Auror or Ministry employee tracking down Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller). But, of course, he has painfully personal stakes in finding the powerful Obscurial. For the prequel lore-obsessed, here's a brief rundown on Yusuf's thorny past and his relationship to the Lestrange family.
We first meet the French-African wizard when he spots Tina at a circus and tells her that he too is looking for Credence. But his intentions aren't so noble in reaching out to her, and he locks...

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore is among the most iconic and beloved characters, not only in J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” book series, but in all of fantasy literature. And that some big robes to fill for Jude Law.
“It was a huge amount of responsibility,” Law said during a Q&A following an early fan screening of the new film “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” at Universal Studios Hollywood on Saturday. “He’s a beloved Potter character. But I thought I was given a little bit of freedom to interpret him myself and I hope I stepped up.”
Law’s fellow cast mate Eddie Redmayne, who plays the film’s lead, Newt Scamander, said during the Q&A that experiencing Law’s turn as Dumbledore for the first time was next to magical.

The final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald dropped yesterday and brought with it a bunch of character posters that remind us that there are a lot of names to keep track of in the film. Thankfully, the one-sheets come with brief descriptions of each witch, wizard, muggle or otherwise to help us remember who they all are.
For starters, we have the central four stars of the series. Newt Scamander (plus his pet Bowtruckle Picket) is apparently “wanted for questioning,” suggesting the magizoologist has got himself into fresh trouble. MacUsa agent Tina Goldstein, meanwhile, is “on foreign assignment,” which means she can meet up with Newt again in Paris, while her sister Queenie has apparently gone off the grid. Perhaps to spend time with “no-maj of interest” Jacob Kowalski?

Eddie Redmayne returns in the highly anticipated sequel as the wizard Newt Scamander, who is called upon by Professor Dumbledore (Jude Law) to track down the evil wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).
“The wizarding and non-wizarding worlds have been at peace for over a century,” Dumbledore tells Scamander in the new footage. “Grindelwald wants to see that peace destroyed.”
“You want me to hunt him down? To kill him?” Scamander asks. Dumbledore tells Scamander, “I cannot move against Grindelwald. It has to be you.”

The hype for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald cranked up another notch this weekend with the release of that amazing Sdcc trailer.
Within it, we got a fresh look at Newt Scamander’s time at Hogwarts, more of Johnny Depp as the sinister Grindelwald and a better glimpse at the magical side of Paris. Aside from all that, though, Warner Bros. also treated us to a brand new poster for the film, which can be seen in the gallery down below.
Featuring the expansive cast of characters, it asks the question of “Who Will Change The Future?” I mean, we kind of know the answer to that, as we’ve read the Harry Potter books and seen the movies, but it’s nice that they’re humoring us in that there’s going to be a bit of mystery in this whole thing.
