The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest winner has been crowned. On Saturday, the annual music event came to a close with Switzerland’s Nemo taking the top prize for their performance of “The Code.”
Nemo bested Croatia’s Baby Lasagna, a favorite to win, with his song, “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” — he came in second place. Ukraine was third, followed by France and Israel.

Switzerland has won the Eurovision Song Contest.
Swiss entry Nemo stormed the contest with the song “The Code,” walking away with 591 points — a combination of a jury vote and public vote.
But during Nemo’s victory performance at the end of the four-hour show the singer accidentally dropped the microphone-shaped glass trophy, injuring their thumb in the process.
“I didn’t just break ‘The Code’ I also broke the trophy,” said Nemo during the press conference after the show, where their hand was wrapped in a bandage. “I broke my thumb as well. But I got a new [trophy] so I technically have two now.”
The non-binary singer — who is the first Swiss Eurovision winner since Celine Dion won in 1988 — was presented with the trophy by last year’s winner, Swedish singer Loreen.

The 68th Eurovision Song Contest champion will be crowned tonight in Malmo, Sweden. But the action on stage is almost dwarfed by the background controversies.
The Netherlands will not be represented in this evening’s Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final after their artist Joost Klein was disqualified.
The European Broadcasting Union released a statement Saturday morning saying the Dutch artist, previously one of the breakout stars of this year’s contest with his song ‘Europapa’, would not be allowed to compete in this evening’s final.
The statement from the Ebu said: “It would not be appropriate for him to continue in the contest” while the legal process takes place.”
Earlier, controversies over Israel’s and Ukraine’s participation made news. Tonight’s finale is also expected to spawn pro-Palestinian street demonstrations in Malmo, which has a large Muslim population.

The Oscars this year were a spectacular affair with “Oppenheimer” taking home Best Picture amongst six other wins. But what made the Academy Awards such a party this year was Ryan Gosling’s live performance of “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie.” Now, if you enjoyed that performance, you’ll surely love the Eurovision Song Contest. Camp, glittery, spectacle. But what is the Eurovision Song Contest, you may ask? Well, here’s a complete guide to fill you in and get you ready for the big event.
What is the Eurovision Song Contest?
The Eurovision Song Contest is an international song competition organised every year by the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu). It’s that time of year again, when Europe and pop music collide in a riotous (and sometimes downright bonkers) display of color, rhythm and fun. This year, the Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Malmo, Sweden, after Swedish singer Loreen won the 2023 competition.
Ahead of the grand final on Saturday evening, the contest’s executive supervisor Martin Österdahl sat down with Variety to talk about how the show has been inspired by the Oscars, is one of the few platforms left that offers “overnight success” and hopes to be a “beacon of light” during times of geopolitical instability.
With this year being the fiftieth anniversary of Abba performing “Waterloo” at Eurovision – a moment that paved the way for the band to conquer the world – and the competition taking place in the band’s hometown of Sweden, there is a lot of anticipation building for some kind of Abba reunion.

There are two halves of this street. Friisgatan, in the center of Malmö — the coastal Swedish town that is hosting the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest — has been designated as the “Eurovision street.” It’s pedestrianized, with bars and restaurants spilling out onto the street and numerous “selfie spots” for attendees to strike a pose. Yellow and pink bunting fly overhead. Most places are decked out with flags of the countries who, on Saturday night, will sing for a place in Eurovision history. But on this day, hours before the second semi-final,...

When is the Eurovision Song Contest?
The semi-finals took place on May 7 and May 9, respectively. Those events act as qualifiers for the grand final, which will take place on Saturday, May 11 at 20:00 BST.
Where is the Eurovision Song Contest?

The world’s largest live music contest is back. The Eurovision Song Contest, a springboard to fame for some of the biggest acts in the world – legendary Swedish band Abba, or more recently, Italian glam rock band Måneskin, for example – will return to screens on Saturday, May 11, to do what it does best: providing the most eccentric performances Europe has to offer.
From perfectly garish outfits and heartfelt ballads to synchronized dance numbers and heavy metal guitar solos, the event is set to feature the wackiest of the continent’s music scene as thousands of fans flock to the Malmö Arena.
Sweden became host after its homegrown star Loreen triumphed last year in Liverpool, England.

Abba’s Waterloo has been voted the greatest song in Eurovision history, and with the Song Contest in Sweden this year, the organizers have a surprise Abba tribute up their sleeves. Changes are also being introduced to both the voting system and the format of the live shows. There will be full live performances in the semi-finals from the artists representing the ‘big five’ countries for the first time, and the public vote will now open at the start of the live final.

Sweden is on high alert and security is being tightened in its third largest city Malmo, ahead of next week’s Eurovision Song Contest.
100,000 extra visitors expected to the city over the week of festivities. BBC News quotes Malmo police chief Petra Stenkula, who said the whole country was already “on a terror level of four out of five.”
The website reports that Malmo will see one of the country’s biggest ever policing efforts, with extra personnel drafted in from across Sweden, as well as neighbouring Denmark and Norway. Swedish police are normally armed. And it cites a Swedish internal police report which described the country as “a priority target for violent jihadist groups,” and cited risks of unrest, cyber attacks and broadcast disruption.
Large demonstrations are scheduled outside the venue, to be attended by those slamming Israel’s participation this year, in context of the nation’s actions in Gaza.

Olly Alexander, pop star and Bafta-nominated actor in Russell T. Davies drama It’s a Sin, will represent the UK in the next Eurovision Song Contest.
The news was revealed during the final of BBC1 dance competition show Strictly Come Dancing last night. “I love Eurovision so much, it’s a dream come true,” said Claudia Winkleman.
The decision breaks with the usual process in the UK, with the BBC usually veiling its Eurovision plans in the new year. Last year’s British entrant, Mae Muller was second to last as Sweden won through Eurovision icon Loreen won.
The Swedish city of Malmö will host the 68th edition of the global singing contest, which airs across Europe on public broadcasters and around the world.
Alexander’s Eurovision song, co-written with Due Lipa songwriter Danny L Harle, will be revealed in due course.

The UK may not have flourished in the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year when it stepped up to host on behalf of Ukraine, but the city of Liverpool emerged a winner.
The BBC reports that the council for host city Liverpool has announced a £55million ($66.66m) boost to the local economy, directly resulting from the Contest and its surrounding events in May.
The council reported that 306,000 people visited the centre in the weeks and days leading up to the Contest, attending the two Semi-Finals, the Grand Final, and a catalogue of other events held across the centre – well up on the 100,000 visitors expected ahead of the extravaganza.
In total, these visitors spent £54.8m ($66.4m) in bars, hotels and restaurants.

The Swedish city Malmö will host the 68th Eurovision Song Contest following Sweden’s win at this year’s event.
The contest will be held on Saturday May 11 at the Malmö Arena with the semi-finals happening earlier the same week on Tuesday May 7 and Thursday May 9. Watch the announcement video below.
The city, in the south of the Scandinavian country, was selected by host network Svt and the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu) after Swedish singer Loreen’s historic second win at the 67th Eurovision in Liverpool, UK, earlier this year.
The win meant Loreen became the first woman to win the competition twice and tied Sweden with Ireland as the country with the most wins (7).

The Swedish city of Malmö is set to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
The city, set on the coast of southern Sweden, was selected after a bidding process across the country.
Swedish broadcaster Svt will stage the show after the country’s singing representative, Loreen, won this year’s competition in Liverpool, U.K.
The winner of the contest is usually selected to host the event the following year.
This year’s Eurovision was held in the U.K. because Ukraine – the previous year’s winners – was deemed too risky following the Russian invasion.
Next year’s Eurovision Song Contest also coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of Abba’s debut on the show, with fans anticipating the contest will feature some kind of tribute to Sweden’s biggest ever pop band.

Swedish singer Loreen was named the winner of Eurovision 2023 for her pop anthem “Tattoo,” triumphing over 25 other nations in the finals on Saturday night.
This is her second time winning the contest, first earning the top prize for Sweden in 2012. She joins Ireland’s Johnny Logan, who won in 1980 and 1987, as a two-time winner. Sweden also has the joint amount of wins in the contest with Ireland at seven victories each.

In honor of Ukraine, Eurovision’s theme for this year was “united by music.” The event took place in Liverpool, England. Typically, the competition’s host country is the winner from the previous year, but since last year’s winner, Ukraine, is at war, the 2022 runner-up Britain hosted this year’s contest.
Loreen performed her song between two moving platforms, dancing around the stage while singing the chorus, “You’re stuck on me like a tattoo-hoo-hoo.

So the 67th Eurovision Song Contest was a game of two halves for the UK: stepping up as host nation in place of Ukraine, it delivered a flawless extravaganza, perfectly walking the tightrope between paying solemn tribute to Ukraine’s current plight and presenting an undiluted celebration of the unity of music with all the humour, goodwill and sometimes outright bonkers business that offers.
And, then on the night of the Grand Final, it could only start to shuffle its score sheets awkwardly as, pretty soon, it became clear the UK’s entry, sung by Mae Muller, was not going to do very well. Ultimately, while Sweden scored a historic victory with Loreen winning for a second time, the UK came second from the bottom of the board with a measly 24 points.

The theme of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, ‘United by Music,’ announced both the annual musical extravaganza’s all-embracing intentions and its status as a joint endeavor. With 2022 winners Ukraine unable to host in Kyiv due to the war, the U.K. – last year’s runners-up, thanks to Sam Ryder’s soaring “Space Man” – stepped in to reinstall this ever more spectacular circus (along with multiple Ukrainian creative personnel) in Liverpool, birthplace of the Beatles. A declaration that this was to be the glitziest of collabs was served via a prologue that paired Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra, reworking last year’s winning entry “Stefania”, with the Princess of Wales, apparently providing piano accompaniment from within Windsor Castle. Soft power-a-go-go.

Swedish singer Loreen won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday night with her power ballad “Tattoo”, at a colourful, eclectic music competition clouded for a second year running by the war in Ukraine.
The diva from Stockholm beat acts from 25 other countries to take the continent’s pop crown at the final of the competition in Liverpool. Finnish singer Käärijä was second in a close-fought battle of the Nordic neighbors.
Loreen, 39, previously won Eurovision in 2012 and is only the second performer to take the prize twice, after Ireland’s Johnny Logan in the 1980s. It’s Sweden’s seventh Eurovision victory, matching Ireland’s record.
“I am seriously overwhelmed,” Loreen said. “This is so beautiful.”

It’s two minutes into the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 and I already have chills. I’m watching something a lot of British people thought we’d never see: a Eurovision hosted in the U.K. After years of abysmal performances and frustration, the U.K. finally changed the narrative last year, finishing in second place behind Ukraine. An estimated global audience of close to 180million watched as she collected the prize on stage in Liverpool, UK.
Finland came second, with Israel in third place.
Host country UK’s Mae Muller came second last out of 26 with 24 points, while last year’s winners Ukraine came sixth. Bottom of the board was Germany with 18 points.

Eurovision Song Contest has given us some great global stars over the years, like Celine Dion, Abba, and Maneskin. The over-the-top competition is back in action this year, with an incredible slate of new songs indicating some tough competition. The 67th Eurovision Song Contest kicked off with a bang on Tuesday night in the UK with the first of two semi-finals.
The city of Liverpool in northern England is playing host to the event this year, on behalf of last year’s winners Ukraine – whose culture was visible throughout proceedings, as it will be all week. A moving interval dance paid tribute to the country who are unable to host this year due to war.
The newly-crowned King and Queen made a surprise appearance – one of their first since their Coronation on Saturday – in the the opening sequence before the first semi-final began at the M&s Bank arena in Liverpool.
The royal couple featured in the opening credits, in a Welcome to Liverpool film. They had previously attended the M&s Bank Arena to officially open the stage for this year’s competition.

The Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest and brightest music competition in the world. Organized by the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), the contest pits various European countries against each other, who have to qualify via one of two semi-finals.
The top 10 in each semi-final then go through to the final, where they are joined by the host country (the winner of the previous year) and the Big Five — who all qualify automatically. Then, each country performs and vies for votes.
After the performances, every member of the Ebu dials in and dishes out 1-8, 10, and 12 points to their favorite songs – with the points decided via a combination of public votes and jury decisions in each country. Whichever country amasses the most points wins.
However, we don’t actually know the full roster for the final, which takes place on May 13, just yet as the semi-finals (May 9 and 11) haven’t taken place yet.

The Coronation was but the warm-up event. This coming Saturday sees the UK play host to the 67th Eurovision Song Contest and venue city Liverpool is pulling out all the stops.
Sunday evening even saw local chart-toppers – from 40 years ago – Frankie Goes to Hollywood reunite after an acrimonious split in 1987. The band, responsible for huge hits ‘Relax’ and ’Two Tribes’, took to the stage at an outdoor event in Liverpool which signalled the beginning of this special Eurovision week for the city.
Frankie fans were delighted to see the band back together, although they were left bemused by them playing only one song ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome’ before lead vocalist Holly Johnson told fans, “Bless you. Lovely to see you all,” and the band left the stage.

"I've never felt like this" Netflix has released an official trailer for a passionate young love film titled JJ+E, which is a reference to the two lovers in this: John-John and Elisabeth. Set in Stockholm in 2021, the film is also known as Vinterviken or Vinterviken 2021 in Sweden, a reference to the swimming place where they go (see Google Maps) on the outskirts of Stockholm. The two youngsters are raised in the same city, yet they live light years apart, separated economically, socially and culturally. That is until the day they start in the same high school class. Based on the award-winning book by Mats Wahl, launching on Netflix worldwide this September. The film stars Mustapha Aarab and Elsa Öhrn as "JJ+E" along with Magnus Krepper, Marika Lagercrantz, Albin Grenholm, Loreen, and Simon Mezher. This actually seems much better than most teen romance from the US, not only because it just looks better,...
