Bo Report: ‘Ladies in Black’ works its charms as Johnny English strikes again

Ladies in Black.’

Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black opened impressively in Australian cinemas last weekend, considering that the primary target audience – mature cinemagoers – don’t normally rush out to see films in the first weekend.

Benefiting from glowing reviews and copious publicity, the 1959-set comedy-drama starring Julia Ormond, Angourie Rice, Rachael Taylor, Ryan Corr, Alison McGirr, Noni Hazlehurst and Vincent Perez, looks set for a long run.

Perhaps surprisingly, the Sony release did not open at No. 1. That honour went to Universal’s spy comedy Johnny English Strikes Again, seven years after the release of Johnny English Reborn.

Dark comedy/fantasy The House with a Clock in Its Walls opened in top spot in the Us but under-performed here while Warner Bros’ animated adventure Smallfoot began reasonably well, positioned to cash in on the school vacation.

Madman Entertainment launched Ben Lawrence’s feature documentary Ghosthunter, which won the $10,000 Documentary

Movie Review – The Predator (2018)

The Predator, 2018.

Directed by Shane Black.

Starring Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Augusto Aguilera, Brian A. Prince, and Yvonne Strahovski.

Synopsis:

When a young boy accidentally triggers the universe’s most lethal hunters’ return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled scientist can prevent the end of the human race.

The Predator is not Shane Black’s finest work. A frustrating mess that has moments of brilliance sat right next to a nonsensical plot, bland lead characters and the worst editing I’ve seen in a long time.

It’s present day and our lead McKenna (Holbrook) is on a sniper mission in Mexico. A predator lands and kills his crew, he’s then shipped off to a secret facility where he meets a team of ex-soldiers, each with their own issues. Along for

The Predator Alternate Ending Details Reveal Scrapped Schwarzenegger Cameo

The Predator Alternate Ending Details Reveal Scrapped Schwarzenegger Cameo
The Predator finally arrived in theaters last weekend and, unfortunately, it wasn't quite the revival of the franchise many were hoping for. In all likelihood, it's going to be back to the drawing board, or to the graveyard, for the hunters after this one. Not that this would have fixed the movie's larger problems, but according to a new report, this latest entry originally had a very different ending that would have been much more crowd-pleasing and would have included a great cameo.

Warning: major spoilers ahead for The Predator. The movie's last scene, as it exists, sees Quinn McKenna (Boyd Holbrook) discovering that a Predator who has betrayed his species has given humanity a way to combat the killers in the future. Billed as a "Predator killer", it's a suit of armor, not dissimilar to what Iron Man wears, with a design befitting this particular franchise. McKenna is the

5 Actors Who Could Replace Henry Cavill as Superman
Henry Cavill may have taken his last flight as the Man of Steel. Reports crashed the internet with news that Cavill would not appear as Superman in Warner Bros. upcoming Shazam!. Talks between Henry Cavill's representatives and the studio broke down. The rumor being that Warner Bros. wanted to take the DC Universe in a different direction. Shifting their focus to a Supergirl film adaptation and recasting the role of her cousin. Cavill then committed to filming The Witcher series for Netflix. Followed by a mysterious instagram post where the actor captions, "Today was exciting #Superman." While wearing a "Krypton Lifting Team" t-shirt no less.

It's no secret that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment want to emulate the success of their rivals at Marvel Studios. Henry Cavill's Superman films, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League all underperformed. If Ben Affleck is indeed also out as Batman,

Bo Report: ‘The Predator’ reboot lacks venom while ‘The Merger’ hangs on

The Predator’ (Photo: 20th Century Fox).

Does the world need another iteration of the Predator franchise, 31 years after soldier of fortune Arnold Schwarzenegger first tangled with the extra-terrestrial creature?

That’s debatable in light of the soft launches in the Us, Australia and other territories last weekend for Fox’s $88 million-budgeted The Predator.

Here Shane Black’s action-adventure was beaten by the third weekend of Warner Bros’ blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians although it outpaced the other openers, Roadshow’s A Simple Favour, Disney’s Christopher Robin, WB’s Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and Sony’s Searching.

Meanwhile Mark Grentell’s football-themed comedy/drama The Merger eased by 30 per cent in its second weekend, making $66,000 on 77 screens, playing just one session a day at most locations. The Umbrella Entertainment release starring Damian Callinan, Kate Mulvany and John Howard has scored $301,000 including festival screenings.

Receipts for the top 20 titles totalled $13.5 million,

The Predator opens soft with $55 million worldwide

20th Century Fox’s hopes of reviving its Predator franchise have hit a bit of a snag, with the Shane Black-directed reboot/sequel The Predator opening soft at the global box office with a worldwide haul of just $55 million.

In North America, the $88 million-budgeted film grossed $24 million, placing it third in the franchise after Alien vs. Predator ($38.2 million) and Predators ($24.7 million), both of which had smaller price tags at $60 million and $40 million respectively.

Internationally, The Predator found itself taking a beating from The Nun, grossing $30.7 million from 72 markets compared to the Conjuring spinoff’s $33.1 million from 62 markets.

Expectations are that The Predator will have been front-loaded at the box office, and with mixed reviews and word of mouth, it looks like Iron Man 3 is going to remain the only box office hit on Black’s directing C.V. for the time being.

‘Predator’ Targets So-So Number One Debut

A quartet of new films were met with consumer indifference this weekend at the North America box office. Fox’s The Predator and Lionsgate’s A Simple Plan each landed moderate business while Sony’s White Boy Rick and Pure Flix’s Unbroken: Path To Redemption both flopped right out of the gate.

With the quartet of new films delivering mediocre numbers, the top ten saw a dip of 8% from numbers one year ago at this time when It scored a massive $60 million in its second weekend of release.

The sixth offering in the endless Predator franchise that began 31 years ago, The Predator landed on 4,037 screens to collect a mediocre $24 million in its first three days. The latest chapter was written and directed by Shane Black (The Nice Guys) and features Olivia Munn, Boyd Holbrook, Sterling K. Brown and Jacob Tremblay. The opening for the $88 million production was the third best of the franchise,

Box Office: ‘The Predator’ Bites Off $24 Million Bow

Box Office: ‘The Predator’ Bites Off $24 Million Bow
The Predator” was able to fend off “The Nun” at the domestic box office.

Shane Black’s “The Predator” launched with a tepid $24 million from 4,037 North American locations. That was easily enough to top the weekend box office, but not enough to land a franchise-best debut. That distinction still belongs to 2010’s “Predator” with $24.7 million (not including the two “Alien vs. Predator” crossover films). Overseas, “The Predator” earned $30.7 million for a global start of $54.7 million. It will need to generate big business internationally to justify its $88 million production budget.

Warner Bros.’ “The Nun” dropped to second place, picking up $18 million in its second weekend for a domestic tally of $85 million. It continues to find success abroad, amassing another $33 million this weekend, taking its global total to $228 million. Meanwhile, Lionsgate’s “A Simple Favor” debuted at No. 3 with $16 million on 3,102 screens. Another new offering, Matthew McConaughey’s “White Boy Rick,” rounded

The Predator” is about to take a bite out of the box office.

Fox’s thriller reboot is on its way to an estimated $25 million debut from 4,037 North American sites. The projection is on the lower end of earlier forecasts, which had placed it in the $23 million to $32 million range. The film earned an estimated $10.45 million on Friday.

Directed by Shane Black, “The Predator” stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, and Sterling K. Brown. The fourth installment of the “Predator” franchise follows a group of former soldiers and a biologist who have to face alien Predators that land in the Georgian backwoods. It has a 34% Rotten Tomatoes score and C+ CinemaScore. “The Predator” faced controversy after Black hired Steven Wilder Striegel, a registered sex offender, to act in the film without the knowledge of the cast or crew. ‘The Predator’ to Prey on Box Office Competition With $25 Million
The Predator” has found its next feast: its box office competitors.

The Fox release is invading North American multiplexes with an estimated $25 million opening weekend at 4,307 sites, early estimates showed Friday.

The alien franchise film is coming in at the lower end of expectations, which had ranged from $25 million to $32 million. “The Predator” should be able to top the second weekend of Warner Bros.’ supernatural horror hit “The Nun,” which is projected to finish at about $20 million for a 63% decline.

Lionsgate’s opening of mystery-comedy “A Simple Favor” is heading for a sold third place with $18 million at 3,102 sites, coming in well above forecasts in the $12 million to $15 million range. Sony-Studio 8 crime drama “White Boy Rick” is also projected to top recent forecasts at about $10 million from 2,500 screens, battling for fourth place with the fifth frame of rom-com hit “Crazy Rich Asians” and the second weekend of Jennifer Garner’s thriller “Peppermint.

‘The Predator’ Review

Stars: Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Sterling K. Brown, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey, Yvonne Strahovski | Written by Shane Black, Fred Dekker | Directed by Shane Black

Co-written and directed by Shane Black (who co-starred in the original 1987 movie), this sci-fi action thriller is either the fourth Predator movie or the sixth, depending on whether or not you count the two Alien Vs Predator films. In keeping with Black’s proclivities as a writer-director, The Predator plays like a shameless throwback to the 1980s, though the results are somewhat mixed.

Narcos’ Boyd Holbrook stars as U.S. mercenary Quinn McKenna, who first encounters the Predator when it crash-lands in the Mexican jungle and promptly slaughters his entire unit. Escaping with his life, McKenna manages to mail a load of alien tech back home before getting picked up and debriefed by a sinister government

The sophomore frame of “The Nun,” which has grossed $64 million in its first six days, may challenge the new installment of the “Predator” franchise for first place.
