Lionsgate Takes U.K. Rights to Armando Iannucci’s ‘David Copperfield’
Lionsgate U.K. has taken British rights on Armando Iannucci’s new movie adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel “David Copperfield,” the distributor announced Thursday.

The Personal History of David Copperfield” sees Dev Patel (pictured) star as the eponymous protagonist, heading an all-star ensemble that includes Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Aneurin Barnard, Morfydd Clark, Anthony Welsh and Rosalind Eleazar.

“I’m thrilled to be teaming up with Lionsgate in the U.K. to be making this wonderful story about poverty and riches, and friendship and loss,” said Iannucci. “With such an amazing and immense cast, ‘David Copperfield’ is the ‘Infinity War’ of the 1840s.”

Peter Capaldi is set to re-team with Armando Iannucci on the director’s new movie adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel “David Copperfield.” Iannucci announced on his Twitter account Tuesday that Capaldi would play the ever-optimistic Mr. Micawber in “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” which is currently in pre-production. It marks Capaldi’s first major live-action role since his swan-song episode of the BBC’s “Doctor Who” aired in December.

Micawber is a key character in the novel. He initially befriends David Copperfield as his landlord, before being sent to debtors’ prison. Later employed as a clerk for the scheming Uriah Heep, he helps Copperfield bring about Heep’s downfall.

Capaldi starred as Malcolm Tucker in Iannucci’s multi-award-winning political sitcom “The Thick of It.” He reprised the role in Iannucci’s feature directorial debut, “In the Loop,” in 2009.

Armando Iannucci’s new retelling of Charles Dickens’ “The Personal History of David Copperfield” is rounding out its cast.

Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie,”Dunkirk” breakout Aneurin Barnard, Ben Whishaw, Morfydd Clark, Anthony Welsh, and Rosalind Eleazar have all joined Dev Patel, who will play the title character. FilmNation could not be reached for comment.

The project will offer a modern take on Dickens’ title character as he navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it. The original “David Copperfield” was first published in 1850 and describes the journey of the titular protagonist — who was modeled after Dickens himself, from impoverished childhood to becoming a successful author, thanks to perseverance and despite a lack of personal discipline.

Kevin Loader and Iannucci will produce the feature, which was developed with FilmNation. Iannucci is directing from a script he wrote with Simon Blackwell.

Sam Riley, Anya Taylor-Joy, Aneurin Barnard and Simon Russell Beale have joined Rosamund Pike in Radioactive, Marjane Satrapi’s biopic of Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie.

Principal photography is getting underway in Budapest this week.

Director Satrapi was Oscar-nominated for her 2007 feature Persepolis. Producers on Radioactive are Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner with Shoebox FilmsPaul Webster. The screenplay was written by Jack Thorne, adapted from Laura Redniss’ graphic novel.

Amazon Studios has come onboard as a co-financier and will also distribute in the Us.

Studiocanal will distribute in the UK, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

Luke Kleintank is set to join the ensemble in Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios’ movie adaptation of “The Goldfinch.”

Ansel Elgort will portray Theo and “Dunkirk” actor Aneurin Barnard is Boris in the film from director John Crowley. Kleintank will play Platt Barbour, the older brother of Theo’s friend Andy.

Based on Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “The Goldfinch” follows a young man named Theodore Decker who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum — an attack that kills his mother. From there, he tumbles through a series of adventures that finds him living in Las Vegas with his deadbeat father and, later, involved in art forgeries.

After the recent addition of Jeffery Wright and Luke Wilson to The Goldfinch, Warner Bros. has now added another name to the adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter brought word that Stranger Things and It star Finn Wolfhard has joined the cast in the film.

The Goldfinch is an adaptation of Donna Tartt’s bestselling book and will be directed by John Crowley with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) in the lead role. The film sees Elgort as Theodore Decker, a young man who survives a terrorist bombing at an art museum which kills his mother and tumbles through a series of adventures before becoming involved in New York City’s art underworld.

Wolfhard will star as Young Boris, a Ukrainian student and troublemaker who bonds with Theo due to both having lost their mothers and who introduces him to drugs and alcohol.

Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios’ The Goldfinch has added two more names to its cast, with Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) and Luke Wilson (Brad’s Status) both signing on to the adaptation of Donna Tartt’s bestselling book.

Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios are putting together a talented cast for their movie adaptation of Dona Tartt's Pulitzer Prize-winning thriller The Goldfinch. Luke Wilson just signed on to play the father character to Ansel Elgort's Theodore Decker.

The Goldfinch is the story of a young man who, after surviving a terrorist attack at the Met that killed his mother, is drawn into New York City's art underworld. At one point in the narrative, Theodore ends up in Las Vegas with his father, a failed actor and alcoholic, which is where Wilson comes in.

Brooklyn's John Crowley is helming the feature film, which also stars Sarah Paulson (as Xandra), Jeffrey Wright (as Hobie), and Aneurin Barnard (as Boris). According to Variety, Willa Fitzgerald is also in talks to sign on as Kitsey Barbour.
