Cold Wallet
One of the highlights of this year’s SXSW, Cutter Hodierne’s Cold Wallet is an edgy little thriller with deeply human characters and some great performances. It follows a group of people caught up in a cryptocurrency scheme who resolve to track down the man responsible and hold him hostage until he reveals the location of the cold wallet – the resource they need to recover their losses. They’re not the sharpest tools in the box, and have no real experience of how to do this kind of thing, so naturally events don’t go to plan, making the situation more and more dangerous for all involved.
“I developed the script with John Hibey, who I work with all the time, and he's a close friend and collaborator and a totally brilliant writer,” said Cutter when we met at the start of the festival. “I got swept up in the.

It’s great to see the always terrific Raúl Castillo in a lead role, bringing both despair and tenacious grit to a luckless blue-collar father whose dreams of liquidity are shattered by a cryptocurrency scam. Cutter Hodierne’s thriller about three financial crime victims who go after the man responsible, Cold Wallet, doesn’t always make the tech talk crackle or exactly nail the tone he appears to be going for, of home invasion tension streaked with dark humor. But solid performances and a pulpy scenario that keeps you guessing make this a suspenseful watch.
While it’s clear that director Hodierne and screenwriter John Hibey know the crypto world, your mileage may vary depending on familiarity with meme stocks and doxing, securities fraud and blockchain. I confess it’s all Greek to me. Films like Dumb Money took a more playful route to the little-guy investor bucking against capitalist chicanery,...

He wasn’t the first and certainly will not be the last to launch big at Sundance with a directorial debut and then take a bit more time to navigate his way through a sophomore feature — a narrative that Cutter Hodierne would put together while the iron was hot. Following Fishing Without Nets, Hodierne now moves into the murky world of crypto. Anchored by a script penned by John Hibey (a participant in the 2023 Sundance Screenwriting Lab), Hodierne not only directs but also produces alongside Vanishing Angle’s Benjamin Wiessner (known for Werewolves Within) and Hibey. Cold Wallet, a heist thriller, exudes a vibe that seamlessly oscillates between a comedy noir, overt slapstick and the intricate layers of the criminal underworld.…...

It’ll be just under a decade since Cutter Hodierne premiered (he won the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section) his tense modern day Somali pirate film Fishing Without Nets at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014. His second feature film appears to carry a Vice-like assignment vibe, as with Cold Wallet Hodierne ventures into the world of cryptocurrency but within the heist thriller genre parameters. Starring Raúl Castillo, Tony Cavalero, Melonie Diaz and Josh Brener, Cold Wallet would have gone in post sometime last March and is part of the selected projects at this year’s U.S. in Progress. The screenplay was written by John Hibey – who also worked on the short and feature versions of Fishing Without Nets.…...

It’ll have been a long decade between debut and sophomore film projects but Fishing Without Nets filmmaker Cutter Hodierne got back into the director’s chair with the Vanishing Angle producer Benjamin Wiessner for Cold Wallet. Deadline reports that the quartet of Raúl Castillo, Tony Cavalero, Melonie Diaz and Josh Brener all signed onto the project. Production just wrapped – so we’re thinking this is a definite Sundance contender for next January.

WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee Urges Hollywood To Be More Inclusive, Less Stereotypical
Members of the WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee are urging the film and television industry to be more inclusive and less stereotypical in its storytelling.
“Reach out to us. Get to know our work. And most of all, take more chances on us to both tell our own stories and contribute to the ones being crafted in writers rooms all over town,” they wrote Monday in an open letter to the industry. But they noted: “How can we get in the rooms to tell other stories if we’re not even being hired to tell our own?”
The group said they formed the committee “primarily on the basis of one disappointing fact. As reported in the Wgaw Inclusion Report of 2020, Middle Eastern writers are dead last, making up only 0.3% of employed writers. You read that right. 0.3%. That’s pretty close to 0%. Because of this, we find ourselves at a cultural inflection point,...

It was another great year at the Sundance Film Festival! There were so many fantastic movies shown, and I still have a couple more to go. I'm really happy to say that Miles Teller and J.K. Simmon's film Whiplash took home the top two prizes, winning the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This was my number one favorite film from the festival, and it seems like everyone else at the festival loved it too, so it doesn't surprise me that it won.
Here's the full list of winners:

Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash was Day 1 feel good buzz title of the fest that ultimately served as a measuring stick for the other competing 15 titles in the section and as predicted below had a good chance at doing what last year’s Fruitvale did: when both major awards of its category. Now that I’ve completed a 15 hour nap, I can watch the ceremony below – and you can spoil the suspense by simply going over the other award winners in the multiple categories below. Next week we’ll be publishing our interviews with several of the filmmakers mentioned below. Congrats to the winners and non-winners.

Sundance Film Festival continues to be one of the most popular, and arguably one of the most important, events on the industry calendar, launching as it does some of the most prominent independent films at the start of each year.
This year will be no different, with Sundance announcing last night the initial line-up of films screening in competition, led by Song One, starring Anne Hathaway; Camp X-Ray, starring Kristen Stewart; Infinitely Polar Bear, with Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana; Joe Swanberg’s Happy Christmas, starring Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham, and Swanberg himself; The Skeleton Twins, with Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, and Ty Burrell; Life After Beth, with Aubrey Plaza, Dane DeHaan, and John C. Reilly; Listen Up Philip, with Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss; Whiplash, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons; and many, many more.

The 2014 Sundance Film Festival is coming up in January and today, the Sundance Institute has named the films that will be in the U.S. and world competitions as well as Next, which is an oddly-named showcase for “Pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling.”
There will be 67 films competing across five different competition categories. That may sound like a lot, but that’s only the first half of the film announcements. Later on they will be announcing the remaining lineup of films being shown outside these competitions.
Overall, it’s an impressive batch of entries, with several surprises and a handful of very promising movies. Check out the full list below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Sundance Institute announced today the films selected for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions and the out-of-competition section of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute said, “That the Festival has evolved and grown as it has over the past 30 years is a credit to both our audiences and our artists, who continue to find ways to take risks and open our minds to the power of story. This year’s films and artists promise to do the same.”
For the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, 118 feature-length films were selected, representing 37 countries and 54 first-time filmmakers, including 34 in competition. As I had predicted here, names such as Cutter Hodierne, Kat Candler, Maya Forbes, Mona Fastvold and Damien Chazelle would be among the invited guests at the ’14 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. It was such a strong year that even some items that I thought would be dark horse/long shots and might be looking at a fest berth from the sidelines are considered definite dramatic comp material, while some that was fully expecting to break the line-up have been passed up.
Horror “labeled” directors Carter Smith (Jamie Marks Is Dead) and Jim Mickle (Cold in July) broke into the line-up that is usually reserved for the newbie type of director and are coming in with perhaps different genre material. We’re glad to see Justin Simien’s Dear White People break into the 16 – it also acts as the long awaited return of Duly Noted producer Effie Brown. Actor...

The U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competition lineups for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival were announced today and just below I have featured pictures from the 16 films that will be competing in the U.S. Dramatic competition and they feature a lot of names you're going to recognize. Jim Mickle made an impact earlier this year with We Are What We Are and he returns with Michael C. Hall with Cold in July. Fishing Without Nets looks to tell a story similar to that of Captain Phillips, only this time from the Somali side of things; God's Pocket is "Mad Men" star John Slattery's writing and directorial debut and he's lined up an impressive cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Richard Jenkins,...

Our snobbish attitudes towards a certain Paul Greengress film principally has to do with us holding out for Cutter Hodierne’s Fishing Without Nets. The short film of the same name was featured at the 2012 edition and took home the big daddy prize of them all with the Grand Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking award. Our enthusiasm for the project is pretty high (check out our most anticipated for 2014 list back in 2013) and the Vice squad got behind this project fairly quickly, production began in September of 2012 and they were editing this this past summer.

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival has come to an end, and the winners of the Jury, Audience, and Next <=> awards have been announced. There was a great selection of films this year at the festival, and I've seen more good than bad. I'm ultimately happy with the outcome. Beasts of the Southern Wild was this year's most buzzed about film and took home the top Grand Jury Prize. I didn't like it as much as everyone else, but it was still good, and it won. I think it was just way too over hyped for what I ended up seeing. Maybe I would have liked it more had I gone in with no expectations.

Fox Searchlight was the big winner at the Sundance Film Festival 2012, as two of their acquired titles won top awards.
