His grandfather was a British colonial officer who served as the high commissioner for the British mandate of Palestine. His father was an executive with Reuters and, ultimately, its worldwide chairman.
He worked for most of the UK's top newspapers, including the Times, Telegraph, Guardian and Independent. In 1975, he became editor of the fading Spectator magazine and turned it into one of the most vibrant British weeklies of the 1970s and 1980s.
