Movie Review – Beautiful Boy (2018)

Beautiful Boy, 2018.

Directed by Felix Van Groeningen.

Starring Steve Carell, Timothee Chalamet, Maura Tierney, Kaitlyn Dever, Stefanie Scott, Kue Lawrence, Jack Dylan Grazer, Oakley Bull, Christian Convery, Julian Works, Amy Forsyth, Andre Royo, Timothy Hutton, and Amy Ryan.

Synopsis:

Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.

The marketing for the latest movie from Belgian filmmaker Felix van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown) aggressively positioned it as one of 2018’s most “awards-baiting” prestige season projects, and though both the script and direction certainly falter in that regard on occasion, Beautiful Boy still succeeds on the strength of its magnificent central two-hander.

The film’s stirring opening scene sees New York Times writer David Sheff (Steve Carell) visiting a college professor to

David Barker’s ‘Pimped’ named best Aussie feature at Monster Fest

‘Pimped’

David Barker’s psychological thriller Pimped, which explores what might happen if two men lured a woman who proved to be stronger, smarter and more cunning than them, won the Australian feature award at Monster Fest: The Homecoming.

Staged at Cinema Nova from November 22-25, the seventh edition of Monster Fest drew nearly 2,900 patrons, a record for the event.

The Golden Monster award for best feature went to director Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos, which is set in Oslo in 1987 and stars Rory Culkin as a teenager who forms the aptly-titled black metal band Mayhem with his equally fanatical mates. They begin burning down churches throughout the countryside and stealing tombstones for their record store, leading to violence. It has yet to find a local distributor.

Podtalk: Director Felix Van Groeningen of ‘Beautiful Boy’

Chicago – In a film certain to get Oscar buzz, “Beautiful Boy” opened on October 19th in Chicago, and opened the recent Chicago International Film Festival. The delicate and sensitive portrayal of addiction features fine performances from Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet, guided by director Felix Van Groeningen.

The film is based on the true story of David (Carell) and Nic (Chalamet) Scheff, a father and son whose relationship is challenged by Nic’s overriding and difficult-to-shake drug addiction. The film is gritty and never blinks, in addition to punctuating the notion that despite a family’s socio-economic condition, no one is immune to the destructive powers of a person unable to rein in addictive needs. Steve Carell and Timotheé Chalamet create an intuitive chemistry as a Dad trying everything to save a son.

Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.

The most important thing to know about Flemish filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen’s English language speaking debut effort Beautiful Boy is that it’s a true story of drug addiction not just based on memoirs from the user, but also the father. Steve Carell and rising star Timothee Chalamet portray David and Nic Sheff respectively, chronicling the inner torment that parents go through from witnessing their loved ones recover and relapse just as much

Film Review: ‘Good Girls Get High’

Film Review: ‘Good Girls Get High’
For the most part, successful teen comedies follow a tried and true formula. Memorable high school movies typically feature characters who feel like outsiders floundering hilariously en route to the revelation that simply by being themselves, they’ll find what’s eluded them for so long. John Hughes knew it well, as did his imitators, realizing that even small deviations can be enough to refresh the genre for a new generation. Full of charm, humor, and heart, director Laura Terruso’s “Good Girls Get High” mixes it up, delivering a “high” concept comedy in which the two kids least likely to go astray do exactly that.

High school senior Sam Jensen (Abby Quinn) and her best friend Danielle Compton (Stefanie Scott) have always lived by the rules. While the rest of their classmates were out doing the crazy, stupid things normal teens do, the two overachieving co-valedictorians were either crushing their extracurriculars,

Steve Carell & Timothée Chalamet in Official Trailer for 'Beautiful Boy'

"I thought we were close, I thought we were closer than most fathers and sons... Why?!" Amazon Studios has released the first official trailer for Beautiful Boy, an adaptation from director Felix van Groeningen. Review: "I.T." (2016) Starring Pierce Brosnan; Blu-ray Release

  • CinemaRetro
By Lee Pfeiffer

For many years Pierce Brosnan has taken control of his own legacy through his production company Irish DreamTime. He's had some mixed results but the bottom line is that he has remained a popular, consistently working leading man. Brosnan's hi-tech thriller "I.T." was released in 2016 with a limited theatrical run that apparently didn't generate any substantial business. The film has been released on Blu-ray where it has been largely savaged by reviewers. Having watched the film, I'll dare to go in the opposite direction and swim against the tide. I found the film to be thoroughly entertaining and very slickly made with rich production values that mask its relatively modest budget.

Brosnan is well-cast as Mike Regan, a mega-wealthy industrialist who is gambling everything he has on the launch of a bold new enterprise. Essentially, it's an Uber-like service that caters to rich executives who need

The "small town" crime film stars John Hawkes as an alcoholic ex-cop who finds the body of a young woman and, through an act of self-redemption, becomes hell-bent on finding the killer but unwittingly puts his family in danger and gets caught up with several dark characters along the way. Sounds fun, no? The ensemble cast includes Octavia Spencer, Anthony Anderson, Robert Forster, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael Vartan, James Lafferty, Daniel Sunjata, Caity Lotz, Jeremy Ratchford, Don Harvey, Stefanie Scott, and Dale Dickey.
