Blumhouse Picks Up New Sci-Fi/Horror Flick Invasion From Leprechaun Writer

Even if some of their films haven’t been your cup of tea, none of us can deny the force in the industry that Blumhouse Productions has become. In the past decade or so, they’ve enthralled audiences with new franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Ouija, The Purge and, my personal favorite, Sinister, to name but a few.

But now, they’re aiming to find new ways of keeping us awake at night, this time via Invasion, a sci-fi horror flick that involves a home invasion that happens during an alien invasion. Sounds cool, right? The company snagged the rights to the spec script this week, and it comes to us from Into the Storm‘s John Swetnam and Leprechaun: OriginsHarris Wilkinson.

Plot details are still scarce, and understandably so, but Deadline says that the film includes themes like immigration and features a strong female lead. It’s far too early for casting,

Blumhouse wins bidding war for sci-fi thriller Invasion

Deadline is reporting that Blumhouse Productions has won a bidding war for Invasion, a spec script by John Swetnam (Into the Storm) and Harris Wilkinson (Leprechaun: Origins).

Although plot details are being kept under wraps, it is described as “a ticking clock sci-fi premise with themes that include immigration [and] revolves around a home invasion that happens during an alien invasion.”

Blumhouse is riding high at the moment, following three number one opening weekends in 2017 for Split, Happy Death Day and Get Out – the latter of which also enjoyed Oscar success this past weekend as Jordan Peele was honoured with the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Next up from the studio is Truth or Dare, which opens on April 13th.

‘Leprechaun: Origins’ Review

Stars: Dylan ‘Hornswoggle’ Postl, Stephanie Bennett, Andrew Dunbar, Melissa Roxburgh, Brendan Fletcher, Garry Chalk, Teach Grant, Bruce Blain, Adam Boys, Mary Black, Emilie Ullerup, Gary Peterman | Written by Harris Wilkinson | Directed by Zach Lipovsky

The WWE has had some success with their chosen films, especially horror. See No Evil was entertaining enough No One Lives, The Call and Oculus also showed that they had an eye for quality and weren’t afraid to take a few risks. Leprechaun: Origins seemed to have been picked up as a vehicle to bring their own Leprechaun inspired wrestler Dylan ‘Hornswoggle’ Postl to the big screen in an acting role, but to try to remake Leprechaun without the much-loved Warwick Davis? The warning signs were already there for how horror fans would feel about this one.

With a name like Leprechaun: Origins and a campaign that connected it to the original, using the term

Leprechaun: Origins Review

There’s no doubt in my mind that Leprechaun: Origins will go down as 2014′s most insulting horror movie, and no, I don’t mean “insulting” in terms of gratuitous violence, blatant misogyny or any other true offenses. Instead, Zach Lipovsky’s carbon-copy creature feature is a slap in the face to horror fans everywhere, promising the rise of WWE star Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl as one of horror’s most recognizable franchise faces.

Every ounce of Warwick Davis’ enigmatic portrayal is stripped in favor of a crude, costumed monster without any humanistic traits, ignoring Everything that makes the original Leprechaun movies watchable – fully admitting a few sequels are proper shite. Despite quality, Davis’ gold-seeking psycho always keeps us engaged with a plethora of B-Movie zingers and goofy actions, but Postl’s faceless nature doesn’t permit for a repeat experience. Leprechaun: Origins is a walking, talking, Celtic cliché, feeling like

First Leprechaun: Origins Trailer Is Heavy On Running, Light On Leprechauns

This is a statement that probably sounds like utter lunacy to some, but I’ve been dying to see the first trailer for Leprechaun: Origins ever since the project was originally announced. Why would one be so excited about WWE’s attempt to bring glory and honor to one of horror’s more, um, interesting villains? Simple – Leprechaun is a classic horror film as long as we ignore the slew of absolutely atrocious sequels, as Warwick Davis turned a creature wearing a green tuxedo into something scary, hilarious, and undeniably entertaining. The Leprechaun holds a special place in my gold-encrusted heart, so I’ve been dying to see how Dylan Postl (WWE’s Hornswoggle) would embody the cunning killer – but unfortunately this first trailer doesn’t offer much in the evil leprechaun department.

Starring Brendan Fletcher, Teach Grant, Stephanie Bennett, and a few other fresher faces alongside Postl, we already
