Richard Akel is a Film/TV Writer and Producer; Legal Counsel. He holds degrees in law (LL.B. Hons. Auckland, NZ, and LL.M. Cambridge, England), a Diploma of Trial Advocacy (National Institute Trial Advocacy, USA), and is admitted to the Bar in England (barrister) and America (attorney). He also has a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA (major in Motion Pictures/TV).
He served in the N.Z. Army; is a strong supporter of LGBTQ+, Women's, Black/Brown and Indigenous equal rights; and currently lectures in English law at the Anglo-American University in Prague when not writing and producing films and TV series.
He's a prolific film/TV writer and has written or co-written numerous screenplays/teleplays for feature films and TV series, including Prague Sonata (lost Beethoven sonata drama/romance); Aphrodite's Doctor (biopic of German-Jewish doctor who discovered G Spot and developed first safe and effective IUD); Robeson (biopic of famous African-American scholar, sportsman, lawyer, entertainer and international civil-political rights activist, Paul Robeson); Sky Warriors (WWII fighter pilots feature and series); Supreme Affair (WWII romance between Allied Supreme Commander, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower and Irish-English beauty, Kay Summersby); Independent Woman (biopic of leading Academy Award® winner, Kate Hepburn); Pirate Queen (historical/action adventure biopic of Chinese pirate Ching Shih), Drone Assassin (US-Middle Eastern military/action adventure); Havana Rendezvous (dramedy based on 1959 meetings in Havana between Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Ken Tynan, George Plimpton, Elaine Dundy, Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara during the exuberant spring time of the Cuban Revolution before it turned to darkness and suppression); Madness of Captain Cook (the great British explorer loses his judgment and life when he betrays the Hawaiians); Children of Aotearoa-the Long White Cloud (US-NZ teenage post-apocalyptic action adventure series).
