G.W. Pabst's silent German classic is intact, restored and looking great. Louise Brooks is the virginal innocent betrayed on every level of the sexual double standard. Brooks is nothing less than amazing, with a performance that doesn't date, and Pabst only has to show how things are to make a statement about societal hypocrisy. German cinema doesn't get better. The Barn Cinema is located within the idyllic grounds of the Dartington Hall Estate, near Totnes. The 14th century estate is picturesque all year round but nevermore so than now, what with the autumn leaves falling. For those who enjoy a pre or post-film tipple, the estate's gastropub, The White Hart, is ideally situated just two minutes from the Barn.
