Film Review: Great Cranston Performance in Hard-Hitting Political Drama About Blacklisted Screenwriter

'Trumbo' movie: Bryan Cranston as screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and Helen Mirren as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. 'Trumbo' movie review: Highly entertaining 'history lesson' Full disclosure: on the wall in my study hangs a poster – the iconic photograph of blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, with black-horned rim glasses, handlebar mustache, a smoke dangling from the end of a dramatic cigarette holder. He's sitting – stark naked – in a tub surrounded by his particular writing apparatus. He's looking directly into the camera of the photographer, his daughter Mitzi. Dalton Trumbo's son, Christopher Trumbo, gave me the poster after my interview with him for the release of Peter Askin's 2007 documentary also titled Trumbo. That film combines archival footage, including family movies and photographs, with performances of the senior Trumbo's letters to his family during their many years of turmoil before and through the blacklist, including his time in prison. The letters are read by,

DVD review: Scream Of The Banshee

Director: Steven C. Miller

Cast: Lauren Holly, Marcelle Baer, Todd Haberkorn, Lance Henriksen, Leanna Cochran, Garrett Hines

Certification: 18

Running Time: 90 Minutes

Synopsis: Archaeology professor Isla Whelan (Lauren Holly) and her colleagues Otto (Todd Haberkorn) and Janie (Leanne Cochran) discover a remarkable artefact – a box that contains a severed head. But the head emits a deadly scream that kills anything in its path, and terrorizes the archaeologists as they attempt to destroy it

There is so much wrong with this film, it’s difficult to know where to begin. But let’s start with the head. The ‘screaming banshee’ (as the archaeologists call it) is just a detached head and not a very scary or convincing one at that. In fact, director Steven C. Miller would have been better off using the talking head from Art Attack, because he would have been more apt in the role of the screaming banshee.

Scream of the Banshee (Review)

2011 - 90 mins. - Rated R

D: Steven C. Miller

C: Lauren Holly, Lance Henriksen, Marcelle Baer, Todd Haberkorn, Leanne Cochran, Garrett Hines

A group of college kids and their professor accidentally unleash an ancient monster that places a death curse on whoever hears it scream.

Scream of the Banshee provides an adequate amount of thrills, chills and suspense. It's competently directed. It's competently acted by everyone involved. It's got a competent array of special effects and makeup. It also happens to look slick and polished. It's a solid horror film in every respect. So what's there to complain about? Well, it never pushes the envelope far enough. It doesn't break out of the box so to speak. It has an interesting concept at its disposal. There was so much mythology or ideology that the film could have explored, but it goes in the more routine direction of teen slasher, but

After Dark's 'Scream of the Banshee' - a promising female villain?

The new horror flick Scream of the Banshee has just been announced - will it give us an awesome female villain?

After Dark movies have not been known to be .. er... 'good'. But sometimes they're not bad. They've just announced a new film in their 2011 Originals lineup (meaning, they paid for it to be made instead of just buying it from the filmmaker already completed) movie Scream of the Banshee, and it has a solid team of semi-okay guys behind it like writer Anthony Ferrante (Boo) and Steven C. Miller (director of the profoundly overrated zombie movie Automaton Transfusion).

There's no trailer, no poster, and no images from the film out yet, but After Dark wanted to get the word out anyway. For some reason. You know, to cause 'buzz'. Or whatever. I probably would have waited till I at least had a poster, if I were them.

This is
