Redbox Begins Renting 4K Ultra HD Movies for $2.50 per Day in Six Test Markets

Redbox is now offering 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc rentals — but it’s starting with only four titles, available in limited quantities in just six U.S. markets.

The first Ultra HD Blu-ray movies available at Redbox kiosks are: Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther,” Lionsgate’s “The Commuter,” Warner Bros.’ “The Matrix” and 20th Century Fox’s “The Martian.” Those are available starting this week at about 2,500 Redbox kiosks in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin, Detroit, and Miami. That represents around 6% of Redbox’s total network of 41,500 kiosks across the U.S.

Redbox’s rental pricing for the 4K titles is $2.50 per night. That’s a premium over $1.75 for regular DVDs and $2 for Blu-ray discs. Redbox isn’t offering online reservations for the 4K Ultra HD discs during the test period.

Upcoming 4K titles Redbox expects to add over the next few weeks include “Red Sparrow” starring Jennifer Lawrence,

Stx International president David Kosse has one simple strategy when it comes to keeping up his endurance level at grueling markets like Cannes: “Just saying no to, ‘Hey, one more quick drink,’” he says. “Because you’re going to bump into somebody else, and they’re going to bump into somebody else. Kosse, 55, needs to maintain his stamina given his busy schedule this year. He’ll be selling the red-hot Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg reunion Mile 22 as well as keeping on the lookout for acquisitions like the Alicia Vikander starrer The Marsh King’s Daughter, which Stx International picked...

Alicia Vikander to Voice ‘Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall,’ the Vr Follow-Up to a Venice Film Festival Winner
As Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider,” Alicia Vikander just carried out a search for her sea-snatched father. The Oscar winner (“The Danish Girl”) will do the same in her next project, “Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall.” The 30-minute Vr experience from San Francisco-based Penrose Studios premieres Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Besides voicing the protagonist — a young girl in the post-apocalyptic future — Vikander executive produced the piece. “Meena’s character has a special spark, and I was immediately drawn to her when I experienced her in Vr,” said Vikander in a statement. “The movie daringly brings up difficult situations while also allowing viewers to get quite close to the characters in such an immersive and emotional experience.”

“Arden’s Wake: Tide’s Fall” was proceeded by “Arden’s Wake: The Prologue,” a Tribeca 2017 debut. According to The Verge, said 15-minute exercise established that Meena and her father live

Is Dwayne Johnson Hollywood’s Most Bankable Star?

Is Dwayne Johnson Hollywood’s Most Bankable Star?
With less than stellar reviews on top of an already cursed genre, it’s a wonder “Rampage” wasn’t a total flop at the box office.

Well, it’s not a total wonder. After back and forth projections showed “Rampage” wrestling with “A Quiet Place” to see who would come out on top at the box office last weekend, there is one main reason the video game adaptation secured the crown: Dwayne Johnson.

“It’s good old star power at work here,” box office analyst Jeff Bock said. “There’s not that many people in this day and age who can pull this off.”

Did Johnson break the video game adaptation curse? Probably not. Did his sheer star power push “Rampage” to the No. 1 spot at the worldwide box office? It seems likely.

Rampage” bowed with $34.5 million in North America, along with an impressive $114 million overseas for a global total of $148.6 million.

Film Review: ‘Rampage’

Based on the same mid-’80s Bally Midway arcade game that unofficially inspired Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” Brad Peyton’s “Rampage” doesn’t seem to understand its own appeal. Reuniting disaster-resistant star Dwayne Johnson with his “San Andreas” director, this brainless big-screen monster-smash movie assumes that audiences want to see the Rock stop three enormous mutant creatures from destroying American metropolises, when in fact, it’s the gleeful prospect of witnessing just that kind of spectacular CG devastation that gave the game its name — and presumably got the movie made.

Flipping the script on decades of nuclear-monster movies, the original “Rampage” invites you to play as one of the three havoc-wreaking monstrosities — a giant ape, a Godzilla-like lizard, or an overgrown werewolf. In the game, the goal is to reduce as many buildings to rubble as possible, whereas this impressive-looking but relatively less amusing big-screen adaptation gets it backward,

‘Annihilation’ Director Alex Garland Speaks Out on Screwing With Genre and Studio Panic Attacks
The brainy 47-year-old son of a British political cartoonist, Alex Garland made his name with novels “The Beach” and “The Tesseract” before moving on to a tortuous relationship with Hollywood. After Leonardo DiCaprio starred in Danny Boyle’s movie version of “The Beach” (Fox), Garland turned to screenwriting on two original grim visions of the future for Boyle and Fox Searchlight, zombiefest “28 Days Later” and sci-fi space trip “Sunshine,” both starring Cillian Murphy, followed by 2012 comic-book flop “Dredd” (Lionsgate).

Backed by Focus Features, Garland’s stunning directorial debut “Ex Machina,” a tense sci-fi three-hander starring Oscar Isaac as a genius robot designer, Alicia Vikander as his wily femme bot, and Domnhall Gleeson as the gullible man who falls for her, was inexplicably rejected for theatrical release and was taken on by A24.
