Mini Bio (1)

Jessie Wei was born in Shanghai, China, but at the age of six, moved with her parents to Melbourne, Australia. She knew no word of English upon arriving in Australia and credits Disney films for teaching her English and familiarizing her with the American accent at a young age. Despite having both parents with artist backgrounds (her father used to be a cinematographer and her mother was a soprano singer), a career in the arts was discouraged and Jessie ended up pursuing business studies. She attended the University of Melbourne and graduated with two Bachelor Degrees in Commerce (Finance Specialization) and Arts (Psychology Major), and for a few years pursued a career in Accounting and Finance. However, outside her day job, Jessie pursued her artistic passions by taking screen acting classes and helping out in various student film projects. It was her acting performance as "Amy" in the Victorian College of Arts (VCA) short film production "Clean" directed by Nicky Reid that caught the attention of the Melbourne-based talent agent Joyce Yuen (Phoenix Artists Management), who immediately signed her on and booked her roles in several Australian Television shows and commercials. During this time, Jessie also wrote/directed/produced/animated/filmed a short animation "Melbourne Corp Chic" and a short documentary "Reach Out" which were both screened at the 2008 ANZ Breakout Arts Festival event. "Reach Out" caught the attention of ANZ executives who went on to sponsoring a larger ANZ campaign championing for inclusiveness of employees with disabilities and more workplace diversity. A few years later, Jessie relocated to Alaska where she is actively involved in philanthropic efforts in the local arts and film community. In 2016 Jessie made her debut as a writer and producer on a narrative short film "In the Now", a story which was inspired by her pug named "Bandit" that passed away. Jessie is passionate about growing the local independent film industry by telling compelling visual stories. While screen acting will always have a special place in her heart, Jessie hopes to stretch her wings further as a Film Writer, Director and Producer in the years to come.
