Amsterdam-based Skoop Media has closed a deal with Walter Presents on “Evilside” and “Sleepers” for the U.K., Ireland, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The platform will have exclusive VOD rights in these territories.

“We can’t wait for our viewers to delve into these two phenomenal series,” enthused Walter Presents CEO Walter Iuzzolino.

“These titles are rich with suspense and filled with evocative worldly themes. Our foreign-language drama lovers should prepare for an exhilarating journey across Europe.”

Community Cinema: Verhoeven’s Failed Experiment Confirms Concepts of Authorship

Four years after its premiere in his native Netherlands and a screening at the 2012 Rome Film Festival, Paul Verhoeven’s experimental title Tricked makes its way to Us theaters, available simultaneously streaming exclusively on Fandor. The director playfully refers to the film as 14 ½, referring to Fellini, since ultimately the ambitious endeavor, wherein audience participation was called upon to craft the narrative based on a four page scenario, isn’t quite feature length. Instead, the film includes a behind-the-scenes preface (called Paul’s Experience) documenting the significant pre-production travails, including thousands of scripts sent, none of which were actually used in completion. As such, the project has a rather uneven, cobbled together feel, and seems to prove the concept of the auteur.

North American distributor Ram Releasing will put Bobby Boerman's App on DVD store shelves, this December 30th. The film received mild praise here, on 28Dla (An App Movie Review). The film is a technophobe's worst nightmare as a mobile application terrorizes one woman's college life. Shot in the Netherlands, App is a fairly straight forward sci-fi thriller. The DVD release will host a few extras. The film is one of the first to offer cell phone interactivity. As events unfold on the screen, watchers can view text messages and alternate angles during the film, on their own phone. Other extras include: Director Bobby Boerman's commentary, a Special Effects bonus featurette and the Original App theatrical trailer. App of My Eye: Second Screen Technology Gets Double Dutch in Gimmicky Thriller

A film that will indubitably be remembered as a quaint first-wave exercise in an increased integration of modern technology and cinematic streamlining as a way to increase audience participation, Dutch filmmaker Bobby Boerman’s sophomore film, App, is presented as little more than any number of dressed up J-horror narratives. That’s not to say there isn’t any fun to be had in what serves as the first film to utilize second screen technology, but it’s cheap and shallow fun, to be sure. The rather superficial mystery at the heart of the narrative takes a considerable back seat to the excitement of messages you may receive on your cell phone from the film’s app, tuned to receive audio cues as the film plays and display extra content that those without the app are unable to see.

Guy Ritchie, the stylish Brit behind the hyperkinetic one-two punch that was Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, hasn’t made a great crime comedy since 2008′s RocknRolla (blame Warner Bros., which keeps throwing Ritchie big fish like Sherlock Holmes and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.). It might be a while until the auteur bounces back with another instant classic but in the meantime, at least we have Black Out, a mostly clever and entertaining Dutch flick that mimics Ritchie’s furious editing technique, convoluted storytelling and zany characters so meticulously that it almost managed to convince me it was doing something original.

That’s a diss, sure, but originality has never been a requirement in cinema; on the contrary, it’s so rare that we wildly applaud whenever we do see it. And to be fair, Ritchie stood on the shoulders of other filmmakers...

Whilst encouraging those selfish enough to sit using their mobile phones in cinemas isn't something we usually adhere to at the Horror Asylum it seems that Bobby Boermans' new Dutch horror 'App' will be. The movie has been made along with an accompanying app, Iris, which is equipped with sonic technology that triggers additional content during the showing. Content that includes off-screen text messages between characters, an alternative angle in a scene, and more. J-horror sequel 'Sadako 3D 2' tried something similar last year which turned phones into vibrating, flashing and noisy little accompaniments to the main feature. 'App' stars the sexy Hannah Hoekstra, Isis Cabolet, Robert de Hoog, Alex Hendrickx and Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen. Check out the poster and new trailer below....

Exclusive: Irish distributor picks up Run and Jump, Love Eternal.

Irish distributor Wildcard has acquired UK and Ireland rights to dramas Run and Jump and Love Eternal.

Steph Green’s Run and Jump, picked up from the producers, stars Will Forte (Nebraska), Maxine Peake, and Ed MacLiam in the story of an American doctor who travels to Ireland to study the Casey family after one of its members suffers a stroke which changes their personality.

Wildcard will release in May. IFC previously picked up Us rights.

Also new to the slate is Brendan Muldowney’s Love Eternal, currently being sold at the Efm by Reel Suspects.

Based on the Japanese novel In Love With The Dead, the film centres on an isolated and death-fixated young man who tries to make sense of the world by getting closer to death. The well-traveled drama stars Robert De Hoog (Skin) and Polyanna MacIntosh.

Matteo Lovadina’s Reel Suspects has picked up international rights on Venice Orizzonti special jury prize winner Ruin.

Amiel Courtin-Wilson and Michael Cody direct.

The Australian-made Ruin is set in modern-day Cambodia. It’s an impressionistic love story about young lovers on the run, trying to escape a life of crime and violence. The cast is led by Rous Mony and Sang Malen. It was made through Flood Projects Production and Hanuman Films.

Madman will release the film in Australia. North American rights are handled by La based Xyz Films and United Talent Agency (UTA). Germany and Italy are reportedly in negotiations for the title.

Reel Suspects has also confirmed two more deals on another of its titles, Brendan Muldowney’s Love Eternal. The film, produced by Fastnet Films, Red Lion, Rinkel Film and T.O. Entertainment, has now gone to Sweden (Njuta Films) and Benelux (Just Film Distribution).

Principal photography has begun on Irish / Luxembourg / Dutch / Japanese co-production 'Love Eternal'. The new feature began filming on location in Cobh, County Cork in late August and production has moved Luxembourg, where it is due to finish in two weeks time. Cast in the feature include Dutch actor Robert de Hoog (Skin, Met Donker Thuis), Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh (The Woman, Burke and Hare), UK actress Amanda Ryan (Elizabeth, Shameless) and Irish actor Declan Conlon (The Tudors, Fair City).

Though you may not recognize her not looking filthy and completely crazed as she was seen in The Woman, actress Pollyanna McIntosh is still staying on the darker side of cinema no matter how well she cleans up!
