Mumbai, June 15 (Ians) The official teaser for writer and director Sudeep Kanwal’s political crime thriller film ‘Privacy’ was unveiled on Thursday. The teaser features gritty realism.
Actress Rajshiri Deshpande, who is best known for her role in films and serials such as ‘Angry Indian Goddess’, ‘Sexy Durga’, ‘The Sacred Games’, ‘The Fame Game’, and most recently the Netflix series ‘Trial by Fire’, plays a voyeur in this social thriller, set in the slums of Mumbai.
The teaser of the film looks promising and intriguing due to its more grounded setting and tense nature. It gives a dark and very real insight into how surveillance cameras capture more than just public spaces, and how public surveillance is a tool that can become a double edged sword, one hand aiding in the safety of the public but also become a tool for criminal minds.

Solely representing India at Tribeca 2022 was director Shlok Sharma’s third feature, “Two Sisters and a Husband”. Returning with his specialty in complex human conflict, the family-drama world premiered in-competition last June. While unfortunately leaving without any wins, the film stands apart with dramatic promises of a heartfelt tragedy, and leaves slivers of hope for India’s cinematic visibility on the global stage.
As suggestive titles go, “Two Sisters and a Husband” hits the nail on the head in evoking discomfort and taboo. Set in the 1990s, Rajat (Dinker Sharma), along with two sisters: Amrita (Manya Grover) and Tara (Avani Rai) move to a remote inn at a Himalayan town. With a dark, anxious mood underfoot, the trio harbour obvious intents to hide from scrutiny. Amrita is heavily pregnant with Rajat’s child, but we find out that she is not in fact Rajat’s wife, but his sister-in-law.

The Busan International Film Festival is about a month away and with their recent lineup announcement we are starting to see lots of exciting promotional material for the upcoming films. India is very well represented in this year's Busan lineup, with eleven films altogether, including new projects from Anurag Kashyap (Mukkabaaz/The Brawler), Hansal Mehta (Omerta), Shlok Sharma (Zoo) and SS Rajamouli's worldwide blockbuster Baahubali: The Conclusion. However, one of the most exciting for me is the world premiere of Devashish Makhija's sophomore feature, Ajji (Granny). In 2012, Makhija directed a little film called Oonga, about a young boy inspired by a performance of the Ramayana who turns himself into Lord Ram and his attempt to save his town from Maoist Naxalite rebels. The story is...

The last few weeks had witnessed the high voltage drama that went behind the release of Anurag Kashyap's controversial drug drama Udta Punjab, which eventually got released last week. Just as when one thought that that Cbfc and Anurag Kashyap have now become 'friends' we think that it's time to think again. The reason? Well, Anurag Kashyap, who is not new to the Cbfc and their objecting to his films, has now found himself in a tight spot again, courtesy, his upcoming film Haramkhor, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The Cbfc has now reportedly objected to the theme of Haramkhor, which is based on student-teacher romance. The film reportedly shows an illegal relationship between a teacher and a teenage student also has many unhealthy dialogues spoken by the students. After the Cbfc refusing to certify the film, the film's makers are now planning to approach Fcat (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal), something that Anurag Kashyap also confirmed.

One of the most frustrating aspects of covering festival and indie films has been the limited access for a wider audience – very often review comments run along the lines of: “Tell me where I can see this!” 2015 was a year that finally saw some great shifts in this, with a number of festival films finally getting a theatrical release – some of them films that had been on the festival circuit for a couple of years, some of them hot off the 2015 festival rounds. Audiences for both festival and indie films are small, but they’re growing, and access to this year’s “best of” selection should be easier for interested viewers. 2015 was, indeed, a great year for these films – enjoy our choices for Festival and Indie Bests!

Does love make monsters of men? Or, as Shlok Sharma's debut feature Haraamkhor suggests, does the idea of love merely magnify the monstrous tendencies latent within men? This is one of many complex ideas that weave through Sharma's film, but it is probably the one that will fill the thoughts of viewers as they leave the cinema. Haraamkhor is not an easy story to tell, and there are times where the methods of storytelling and the tonal shifts appear incongruous with the core story. However, when viewed as a whole, rather than the sum of its seemingly disparate parts, Haraamkhor works quite well in communicating opposing truths about the nature of love and what it does to people.Haraamkhor (The Wretched) is the story of Shyam, a...

Nfdc Film Bazaar is introducing a new segment for films in need of gap financing this year. Eighteen projects will be pitched to potential investors to find finishing funds at the first Investor Pitch in Goa this year.
“We learnt that independent films invariably run out of budget at post-production stage. So we thought of organizing a pitching session of such films from Nfdc Recommends section and presenting them to investors, producers and distributors. Here prospective investors can get to watch full films,” says Deepti DCunha, the curator of Investor Pitch.
In order to try out the idea, Nfdc invited selected filmmakers from the Viewing Room section last year for a pitching forum. Filmmakers were asked to showcase the trailers and talk about their films for about five minutes.

Cinematographer Siddharth Diwan at DearCinema IndieTalk, Photograph: Gaurav Singh
DearCinema organized IndieTalk with emerging cinematographer Siddharth Diwan on June 14 in Mumbai. Among others, the session was attended by three directors with whom Siddharth has collaborated- Kanu Behl (Titli), Vasan Bala (Peddlers) and Shlok Sharma (Haramkhor).
This is what we learnt at the session with Siddharth. Please note that these are not exactly Siddharth’s words but our understanding of what he said.
What’s the right format for your film?
Filmmakers now have a plethora of choices available to shoot their films. So, the first question a cinematographer/filmmaker has to deal with is – what’s the right format for the film? Format is dictated by various factors such as the look, style of shooting, lighting and most importantly, budget.
Camera and its entire workflow needs to be thoroughly tested
Once you narrow down your choices, the next step is to test the camera thoroughly.

DearCinema will organize the next session of IndieTalk on June 14 in Mumbai with cinematographer Siddharth Diwan, who shot Titli, the only Indian film in the official selection of Cannes Film Festival this year. This was the third consecutive year for Diwan at Cannes, a rare feat for an Indian cinematographer.
Diwan’s Peddlers (writer-director Vasan Bala) was screened in the Critics Week sidebar of Cannes in 2012. He also worked as the second unit cinematographer for Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox that was also screened in the same sidebar in 2013.
Diwan represents the new generation of Indian cinematographers who are at ease with rapidly changing technology and whose imagery is in direct contrast with Bollywood, that believes in projecting larger-than-life images of stars. He is known for working efficiently with minimal crew, on real locations and pulling off feature length films in very short schedules.

Huma Qureshi in “Sujata”
It doesn’t happen too often that you can walk up to a theatre, buy a ticket and watch short films. “Shorts” presents one of such rare opportunities to watch short films the way films should be watched!
The films which make “Shorts” were meant to be short films and just that. And that’s why each of these films have a distinct voice of their own. Don’t look for thematic continuity or similarity in style. The five films are highly individualistic, divergent and that’s what makes for an engaging viewing. The curator of the package should also be congratulated for presenting such an eclectic mix of some of the recent short films from India.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui teamed up with Rohit Pandey for the five film ensemble Shorts with directors Shlok Sharma, Siddharth Gupta, Anirban Roy and Neeraj Ghaywan along with Rohit Pandey. He said he is glad to be a part of this venture as working with young directors includes inputs from both ends.
“When you are working with a young and fresh director, you can give in your inputs and combine them with his ideas. So I can tell him what I think I need to add, and then have a totally different character as the final product,” he added.
Nawazuddin is known to completely delve into his character in a way that it sometimes becomes difficult to recognize him in his different roles. His latest performance in Dibakar Banerjee’s short film in Bombay Talkies received a lot of praise. He says he feels good that he is a part of that...

Five young directors under the supervision of filmmaker AnuragKashyap have created five short format movies that are centered on the core theme of ‘India is a Visual Journey’. The films capture the various lives in India beautifully. Each story picks up a particular element that represents the pulse of India in the current time.
Talking about this great opportunity, Anubhuti Kashyap, director of Moi Marjani, says, “This is the story of a middle aged woman, raising her child independently, the problems that she faces in her daily life and about her search for love. The movie is based in Patiala and its called Moi Marjani as this is very Punjabi way of an old person addressing a young person with a lot of affection which may seem like scolding.”
All the short films are launched by Bollywood giant Viacom18 Motion Pictures giving these young and talented directors a great platform.

Nandita Dutta takes us into the world of the most sought after Independent producer of Mumbai, Guneet Monga
Next week, Guneet Monga heads to Cannes with an impressive lineup as a producer: Monsoon Shootout in official selection and Dabba (The Lunchbox) in International Critics’ Week.
She featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s list of 12 outstanding International women achievers in the field of entertainment a few months ago. They called her India’s go-to producer for edgy young filmmakers. The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (Iffla) conferred on her their annual Industry Leadership award.
Though her success may sound astounding, few will believe that this young woman-full of enthusiasm-travelled to her first international film festival in Venice in 2010 with some 200 posters and 20,000 handouts of That Girl in Yellow Boots. She thought she could paste posters of her film everywhere-like the festivals she had attended in school and college-and grab attention of the audience.

Anurag Kashyap at Cannes
Cannes has Kashyap written all over the Croisette. His production Udaan broke the seven year jinx at the prestigious festival in 2010. In 2012 he returned to the French Riviera as producer of Vasan Bala’s Peddlers at Critics Week while his two part Gangs of Wasseypur screened at Directors’ Fortnight. This year the tally goes further up with his productions Dabba and Monsoon Shootout, while he leads from the front with his Ugly. And that’s not all- he has also directed a segment of Bombay Talkies that has a gala screening to celebrate the 100 years of Indian cinema. For Cannes it seems like Indian cinema has become synonymous with Anurag Kashyap. Bikas Mishra speaks to the director in an exclusive interview.
What is Ugly about?
I don’t want to talk about Ugly. It’s just a thriller. I never narrated the script to anybody before...
