Movie Review – Surviving the Wild (2018)

Surviving the Wild, 2018.

Directed by Patrick Alessandrin.

Starring Jon Voight, Jamie Kennedy, Vail Bloom, and Aidan Cullen.

Synopsis:

After the death of his grandfather Shaun (Aidan Cullen) hikes into the mountains to escape his bickering parents followed by a benevolent guardian angel. With only a black Labrador for company Shaun soon discovers there are more things to fear in the wilderness than other animals.

There are good things to be garnered from this rites of passage feature beyond the presence of Oscar winner Jon Voight. Directed with economy the genre conventions of death, divorce and teenage disconnection are approached sensitively, allowing Voight to shape his performance with care. Newcomer Aidan Cullen holds his own opposite the veteran actor who is generous enough to remain understated in their scenes together. Cullen’s Shaun is savvy, emotionally isolated and in need of a guiding hand, which both parents seem incapable of providing.

Jon Voight’s ‘Riley’s Peak,’ ‘Ghost Beyond’ Get Financing From Steven Paul
Steven Paul’s Sp Releasing has provided financing for two just-completed movies — action-adventure “Riley’s Peak” and horror-thriller “The Ghost Beyond,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Paul, one of the producers of Scarlett Johansson’s “Ghost in the Shell,” is continuing to ramp up Sp Releasing’s distribution slate as part of plans to distribute more than 50 films over the next three years through a multinational production effort and an expanding acquisitions drive. Titles typically have budgets under $10 million and will be released theatrically by Sp Releasing and through its worldwide output deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

“Riley’s Peak” stars Jon Voight, Jamie Kennedy, Vail Bloom (“Vanderpump Rules”) and newcomer Aiden Cullen. The story centers on a young boy (Cullen) and his dog as they trek the Kentucky wilderness on a journey to spread the ashes of his recently deceased grandfather, portrayed by Voight.

Patrick Alessandrin (“District 13”) directed

Vanderpump Rules' Former Cast Members: Where Are They Now?

Vanderpump Rules' Former Cast Members: Where Are They Now?
How anyone could ever leave Sur is beyond us, but it has been done, and these former cast members are proof there is life after Vanderpump Rules. Vail Bloom, a 2004 graduate of Princeton University, worked as a hostess at Lisa Vanderpump's famed restaurant and appeared in the show's third season. She'd earned a Daytime Emmy nod for her role on The Young and the Restless prior to Pump, and per Bravo, she's still acting and recently appeared in a film called Too Late. For a brief time in 2015, Bloom was romantically linked to Chris Pine. Not a bad post-Pump run, if we do say so ourselves! Then there's Laura-Leigh, the Juilliard grad who worked as a server at Sur during the first season...

Too Late Review

It’s hard to shake the influences behind writer/director Dennis Hauck’s feature debut Too Late.

Heavily inspired by the ’80s-’90s works from Martin Scorsese, Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Altman and Quentin Tarantino, it’s one of those imitation films that always runs the risk of jeopardizing its own potential by basking in the shadows of its predecessors. And it is, indeed, perhaps just a little too reminiscent of those films — from Jackie Brown to Boogie Nights to Goodfellas — to really stand out on its own, or to become more than an elusive, moody wannabe at times.

But shot and projected entirely in 35mm film, and in a series of five single-shot acts, it’s nevertheless a beauty to behold. Impressive, if quite showy, in its presentation and bleeding with pulp, suave and sophistication, it’s a copycat for sure, but a damn good one — a crisp neo-noir

Film Review: ‘Too Late’

Film Review: ‘Too Late’
Too Late” is structured around a striking gimmick: Its Los Angeles-set neo-noir tale is told in five non-chronologically ordered segments, each consisting of one continuous shot running a single Techniscope-format 35mm reel (approximately 22 minutes) in length. The sense that one is watching an elaborate formal stunt is underlined by the studiedly flamboyant dialogue and artificial situations in writer-director Dennis Hauck’s first feature, a supremely self-conscious genre exercise in which character and emotional depth don’t seem to be on the very meta menu. Rolling out theatrically in 35mm-only exhibition (which expands after single-screen March 18 and April 1 openings in Los Angeles and New York, respectively) the pic will get variable critical support. Such stylistic bravado will surely accrue some cultish admiration there and in home-format release.

The opening sequence finds Dorothy (Crystal Reed) waiting on Radio Hill for a friend, private eye Mel Sampson (John Hawkes), who’s surprised but

John Hawkes Goes on a Mission in Trailer for 35mm-Exclusive Release ‘Too Late’

A stand-out in virtually every project he’s part of, we’re always ready for another performance from John Hawkes. His latest film, Too Late, finds him as a private investigator in Los Angeles hunting down a missing woman. However, it likely won’t be the story that gets talked about most (at least initially) when it comes to Dennis Hauck’s feature, but rather the structure and exhibition. It’s composed of five acts, each a single, uncut 20-minute-plus shot (roughly the length of an entire projected film reel), and it’s being released in the now-rare, 35mm-exclusive format starting next month.

We said in our review, “A bit reminiscent of John Herzfeld’s Two Days in the Valley, the tale is woven from several different perspectives of an ensemble cast that all come nicely together at the end to complete a compelling puzzle. While there is a definite fetishization of Tarantino-style dialogue,

Vanderpump Rules Star Jax Taylor Claims He Hooked Up with Lindsay Lohan: 'She Was Great'
Did Lindsay Lohan forget a name on her infamous sex list?

Vanderpump Rules reality star Jax Taylor claimed he hooked up with the actress on Monday's episode of Watch What Happens Live – the same show on which Lohan, 29, confirmed the authenticity of a piece of paper naming her past paramours that someone snuck a photo of last year.

"It was just once," a blushing Taylor, 36, revealed. "She was great. It was a long time ago."

When pressed by host Andy Cohen for more dirt, the bartender admitted, "She was just very affectionate."

Also in Taylor's little black book? A porn star name Bridgette B.,

[Fantastic Fest Review] Too Late

A seedy Los Angeles-set crime caper filtered through an Elmore Leonard novel is where you might find Dennis Hauck’s debut feature film Too Late. Presented out of sequence as five unbroken twenty minute shots, the film has an undeniable theatrical quality, with each scene feeling like an act of a play being performed out of order. And it’s all shot on 35mm film, giving it that unique grainy texture, all while giving credence to the fact that Hauck is paying tribute to the vintage era of cinema. A bit reminiscent of John Herzfeld’s Two Days in the Valley, the tale is woven from several different perspectives of an ensemble cast that all come nicely together at the end to complete a compelling puzzle. While there is a definite fetishization of Tarantino-style dialogue, characters and even plotting, Too Late does an admirable job of paying homage to this

Six years after Pine was enjoyed a brief romance with The Hills' Audrina Patridge, he stepped out in Hollywood Sunday with Vanderpump Rules star Vail Bloom. The two were photographed sharing a kiss on the lips while dining alfresco. The two were also spotted shopping at nearby American Rag. Pine rep has not commented on the couple's relationship status.
