Laurie has been a broadcast journalist, writer, producer and consultant since 1972. He served as an international correspondent for NBC News (1972-1978) and for ABC News (1978-2000).
Attached to the ABC Television 'Close-up' unit in the 1980's, he co-wrote and was presenter of three documentaries: Cambodia: This Shattered Land, Japan: Myths Behind the Miracle, and Unruly Dragon: China's Yellow River.
He has taught television journalism and documentary film history at the University of Hong Kong (2005-2011) From 2000-2005, he headed news program development at STAR TV Asia, a subsidiary of News Corporation working in Hong Kong and India.
His Hong Kong based production and consulting company Focus Asia was founded in 2005.
