Film Review: ‘A Case of You’

Film Review: ‘A Case of You’
A lot of interesting, funny performers aren’t very interesting or funny in director Kat Corio’s “A Case of You.” Co-penned by thesps Keir O’Donnell and Justin Long with the latter’s sibling Christian Long, this surprisingly bland indie version of the generic mainstream romantic comedy has talent to burn, none of it put to good use. It’s not awful, but the paucity of fresh ideas or humor makes this overly safe first writing effort for all three scribes innocuous to the point of instant forgettability. Limited IFC theatrical release on Nov. 8 (simultaneous with VOD launch) is unlikely to make much of a dent, but cast names should drive decent home-sales biz.

Sam (Justin Long) is a successful writer — albeit not a very fulfilled one, since so far he’s only published work-for-hire novelizations of “Twilight”-esque film franchise “Teen Vampire” — smitten with the girl behind the

Watch: Justin Long Cute-Stalks Evan Rachel Wood in Trailer for 'A Case of You'
In the internet age, it's hard not to Google search or Facebook stalk potential love interests in the hopes of finding some good info that you can use to your wooing advantage. In the new trailer for "A Case of You," Sam (Justin Long) scours the internet profiles of barista Birdie (Evan Rachel Wood) to learn her likes and hobbies so that he can transform himself into the perfect match. When Birdie falls for him, Sam has to keep up the act, or risk her finding out who he really is, which for some reason is a bad thing. Though the film seems to follow the usual romantic comedy trope of "I'm not who I said I was", albeit with a bit of a creepy stalker vibe, at least Long and Wood look like they've got some chemistry. And hey, is that Peter Dinklage in a comedic supporting role? The

Tribeca 2013 Review: ‘A Case of You’ Charms Despite Murky Plot and Weird Cameos

Director Kat Coiro‘s (L!fe Happens) latest feature, A Case of You will undoubtedly enter the pantheon of “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” movies. You know the kind – movies that glorify the precious nature of spritely, eccentric leading ladies who make their “normal” suitor’s heart got pitter-patter. Our Mpg here is named Birdie Hazel (Evan Rachel Wood), a barista at a Brooklyn coffee shop – she wears fedoras, draws caricatures in Prospect Park, and takes ballroom dancing with a pack of admiring senior citizens. She also has an unparalleled taste in music literature, as she appreciates the likes of both Joni Mitchell and Walt Whitman. When struggling writer Sam (Justin Long, who co-wrote the film with his brother Christian Long and co-star Keir O’Donnell) falls for her, he looks to her Facebook page as inspiration and makes all of her quirky interests his so that she will fall for him. When

Questions and Answers from Tribeca: Justin Long

"A Case of You," Justin Long's latest comedy, revolves around a hack writer who wins over a barista (Evan Rachel Wood) by stalking her on Facebook and posing as her "perfect man."

It's not exactly "The Big Wedding," which is why the $3 million indie is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend and not fast-tracked for mall multiplexes. It's a helluva lot bolder than your average studio rom-com.

Long, who stars but also produced and co-wrote the script with brother Christian Long and Keir O'Donnell, told us about his feelings on online dating (and stalking) and which one of his movies is sooooo much better when you're stoned.

So "A Case of You"… The first great cyber-stalker rom-com of our time?

Well I don't know if it's great but … It's funny while we were writing we were like, has no one really done this? I was surprised. We

Meet the 2013 Tribeca Filmmaker #7: Kat Coiro Continues Her Hot Streak With Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood Starring 'A Case of You'
Even if one hasn't seen any of the films by director Kat Coiro, it's almost impossible to not admire her amazing rise in the past few years, creating two shorts and three features since 2010, beginning with her short "Idiots" and the premiere of her first feature length "L!fe Happens," at the 2011 Los Angeles Film Festival. Coiro is hardly a new face to Tribeca, her second film "While We Were Here," premiered at the festival just one year ago in 2012, but now she returns with her third full length feature "A Case of You," starring Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, and Peter Dinklage among others. What it's about: "'A Case Of You' is a romantic comedy written by Justin Long, Christian Long and Kier O'Donnell that centers on Sam (Justin Long) who admires Birdie (Evan Rachel Wood) from afar but doesn't have the self-confidence to approach her.
