- He composed instrumental, solo vocal and choral works, and served on the music faculty at American University and George Washington University. He was the founder and artistic director of the Choral Arts Society of Washington (DC).
- His mother was a home economics teacher, and his father and grandfather were Methodist ministers.
- He began taking piano lessons at age 10, and won a scholarship to study organ at the Peabody conservatory in Baltimore. After serving in the Army, he began working at the Washington National Cathedral. He was organist-choirmaster of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in the District from 1960 to 2007.
