Apple’s scripted television endeavour will soon include a thriller series from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan...

M. Night Shyamalan may have just endured the official cancellation of his secretly-post-apocalyptic Fox television series, Wayward Pines, but he certainly didn’t have to wait long for his television hopes to rebound. That’s because he’s just closed a deal with Apple that will see him create – and direct – a yet-to-be-titled, thriller series.

Shyamalan’s deal with Apple has yielded a 10-episode straight-to-series order for the television project, teaming him with writer and executive producer Tony Basgallop, of Berlin Station, 24: Legacy, 24: Live Another Day and What Remains fame, to create a mystery series, described vaguely as a “psychological thriller.” Interestingly enough, Shyamalan’s thriller project will definitely distinguish itself in terms of format, since – contrary to genre convention – it will manifest as a half-hour series,

Split Director M. Night Shyamalan To Produce New Thriller Series For Apple

At one time, M. Night Shyamalan was the toast of Hollywood, having directed such hits as The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. But as time went on, his name became less of a draw, especially after he treated us to such “gems” as Signs, The Village, The Happening and The Last Airbender. When laid out like that, his resume has more misses than hits, putting him on par with the Wachowskis, but I digress.

Fortunately for him, there’s been a turnaround of sorts in recent years, with Split having garnered much acclaim. Given that, there seems to be a renewed sense of confidence surrounding his brand as it were, even if the ax just came down on Wayward Pines.

With that, Apple is going all in on Shyamalan, hiring him to executive produce a new thriller that’s already been given a straight-to-series order. Currently without a title, the show will consist of 10 half-hour episodes,

M. Night Shyamalan is heading to Apple.

The streaming service has given a straight-to-series order to a psychological thriller series from writer Tony Basgallop that Shyamalan will executive produce. Plot details for the series are being kept under wraps. The half-hour series has received a 10-episode order, with Shyamalan also set to direct the first episode.

The series will be produced by Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge Pictures with Ashwin Rajan serving as executive producer. Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black and Steve Tisch of Escape Artists will also executive produce, with Taylor Latham co-executive producing.

This project will be Shyamalan’s second foray into television. He previously executive produced the Fox series “Wayward Pines,” which recently ended after two seasons. He most recently wrote, produced, and directed the hit film “Split” and is preparing the sequel “Glass,” both of which tie into his 2000 film “Unbreakable.” He is also behind blockbusters like “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs.”

In a competitive situation with multiple outlets pursuing the project, the tech giant has landed an untitled psychological thriller from M. Night Shyamalan. The half-hour project has scored a 10-episode, straight-to-series order.

Shyamalan will executive produce the series, whose premise and logline are being kept under wraps. The project is created and written by BAFTA-nominated Tony Basgallop (EastEnders, Hotel Babylon, 24: Live Another Day, Outcast). Basgallop and Shyamalan will executive produce, with the latter set to direct the premiere.

M Night Shyamalan on board latest Apple series

Details scarce on untitled psychological thriller.

M Night Shyamalan and British TV writer Tony Basgallop are to collaborate on a half-hour psychological thriller series that has been given a 10-episode straight-to-series order by Apple.

Basgallop, known for TV projects including To The Ends Of The Earth and Berlin Station, has created and will write the series and act as executive producer with Shyamalan, who will also direct the series’ first episode. Apple did not give a title for the series and no details of the story have been revealed.

Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge Pictures will produce, with the company’s Ashwin Rajan serving as executive producer together with Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black and Steve Tisch from Escape Artists.

Previous TV projects from feature writer-director Shyamalan include Wayward Pines, the mystery sci-fi series just cancelled after a two-season run on the Fox broadcast network.

Fox Cancels M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Wayward Pines’ After Two Seasons
Fox has pulled the plug on “Wayward Pines,” the drama series from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, after two seasons.

The mystery serial that aired in the summer of 2015 and 2016 hasn’t been on the air in nearly 18 months. But Fox executives last year suggested during the Television Critics Association press tour that it might return for a third installment.

Shyamalan directed the pilot and shepherded the series with original showrunner Chad Hodge about a Secret Service agent who discovers strange happenings in a small Idaho town. “Stranger Things” creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer worked on the first season of the show as co-exec producers.

“Wayward Pines” hailed from 20th Century Fox TV and exec producers Donald De Line, Anna Fricke, Mark Friedman, Ashwin Rajan, and Shyamalan.

M. Night Shyamalan has started shooting his thriller “Glass,” with Disney joining Universal as a distributor.

The studios announced Monday that Universal will handle domestic distribution, while Buena Vista International is on board for international territories. Shooting began Monday in Philadelphia — the site of many of Shyamalan’s movies.

“Glass” brings together the narratives of Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable,” which was released through Disney, and last year’s “Split,” from Universal. Shyamalan is self-financing.

From “Unbreakable,” Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson is back as Elijah Price, best known by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from “Split” are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy, the only captive to survive an encounter with McAvoy’s The Beast.

Spencer Treat Clark and Charlayne Woodard, who appeared in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable,” are reprising their roles in “Glass,” the filmmaker’s sequel to the 2000 hit.

“Glass” is a follow-up to Shyamalan’s films “Split” and “Unbreakable,” in which Bruce Willis starred as David Dunn, a security guard who discovers he has superhuman powers that allow him to see the crimes people have committed by touching them.

Willis and his “Unbreakable” co-star Samuel L. Jackson are also returning, along with “Split” stars James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy.

In “Glass,” Dunn pursues Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Elijah Price, aka Mr. Glass (Jackson), emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

12 Years a Slave and American Horror Story actress Sarah Paulson has officially joined M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, the sequel that rounds up the Unbreakable, Split trilogy.

Shyamalan, who has been busy putting the finishing touches on the script for Glass over the last few weeks, took to social media to announce the Paulson’s addition to the cast which also includes James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson and Anya Taylor-Joy.
