While it can be a special experience to witness a truly terrifying horror movie in theaters, there were several fantastic scary movies that never made it to the big screen. While the advent of the internet means many horror movies come straight to streaming, there were also plenty of excellent straight-to-dvd or even straight-to-vhs horror movies from years gone by. These often low-budget releases didnt have to pander to box office expectations and, in some cases, were able to be more ambitious and unique as a result.
Some of the best non-theatrically released movies were in the horror genre, as incredible horror movies were often produced with very little funding or support from major studios. In some cases, direct-to-video sequels even outdid their theatrical predecessors and gained cult followings among horror fans in the years since their release. Malum is, according to its press release “a bold and expanded reimagining of the 2014 horror cult classic, Last Shift”. Now some may simply take that as a fancy way of saying it’s a remake of a film that’s less than ten years old. But there’s a difference between this and your average remake, it’s the work of the original director Anthony Diblasi and his co-writer Scott Poiley.
I considered revisiting Last Shift before watching Malum because while I remembered the basic plot and that I really liked the first hour then being let down by the final act, I didn’t recall a lot of the details. But, in part due to how knowing what to expect spoiled the impact of another recent reimagining,...

The following contains major spoilers for Last Shift (2014) and Malum (2023).
Nothing divides the horror community like a remake. For decades fans have debated the merits of cinematic retellings of our most beloved horror films with strong arguments on either side of the equation. The trend exploded in the early 2000s with Platinum Dunes leading the charge to remake or reboot nearly every iconic title available. Recent years have seen the rise of legacy sequels; a curious hybrid that simultaneously continues the original story and (hopefully) takes the franchise in a new direction. Enter Malum. Anthony Diblasi’s 2023 gore-fest is an expanded reimagining of his own breakout film Last Shift. Released in 2014, this haunting cult horror follows rookie police officer Jessica Loren (Juliana Harkavy) whose first shift on the job goes terrifyingly wrong.

Anthony Diblasi is joining the rare roster of directors remaking and reimagining their own movies with Malum. A reimagining of the cult classic horror movie Last Shift, the film centers on a rookie police officer tasked with supervising a closing station, where her late father used to work, only for the place's dark history to begin reverberating.

Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood, and horror movie remakes have long been a thriving part of the industry. Directors will turn their creepy, viral short films into larger studio features, like David F. Sandberg did with Lights Out, and surprise foreign genre hits will sometimes get a makeover for U.S. audiences with the original director at the helm. But you’d be hard pressed to find a modern American director who’s interested in remaking their own feature film.
Enter Clive Barker protégé Anthony Diblasi, who was certainly up for the challenge when he was approached by new genre studio Welcome Villain with the possibility of remaking his 2014 low-budget gem, Last Shift. The director believes he’s the first American director to take on such a feat since Leo McCarey remade Love Affair into An Affair to Remember in 1957.

"Your daddy started something very important..." Welcome Villain has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled Malum, arriving in theaters only at the end of March. This is actually a new remake of the 2014 horror film Last Shift, made by the same filmmaker updating his own film, similar to the way Sam Raimi made Evil Dead 1 & 2. Helmed by director Anthony Diblasi and co-written by Diblasi and Scott Poiley, Malum re-imagines the original critically-acclaimed horror hit from the festival circuit and expands on the filmmaker's vision of nightmare-inducing terror. A rookie police officer willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her police officer father's death and a vicious cult. This updated film stars Jessica Sula as Jessica Loren, with Kevin Wayne, Monroe Cline, Candice Coke, Valerie Loo, Clarke Wolfe, Natalie Victoria. This does look pretty freaky.

Jessica Sula (Split) stars in the currently untitled reimagining, which is coming to us from Welcome Villain Films. This is the company’s first feature.
The Last Shift reimagining centers on
a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult. Throughout the night, she finds herself barraged by terrifying supernatural events while unveiling the truth behind her family’s twisted past. This reimagining takes the premise of the 2014 festival hit and flips it on its head, thrusting viewers into a relentless, adrenaline-fueled, bloody cult nightmare.

Earlier this year, brand new production and distribution company Welcome Villain Films launched with “an expanded reimagining” of 2014’s Last Shift in the works. Today, Last Shift announced its lead and a tease of what to expect.
Split actress Jessica Sula (“Scream: The TV Series”) will star in director Anthony Diblasi’s reimagining of his 2014 chiller.
Sula will play “a rookie police officer (Sula) who willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station. She hopes to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult, but throughout the night she’s thwarted by terrifying supernatural events that connect to her family’s twisted past.”
The untitled reboot has wrapped production, with post-production expected to finish this fall for a planned 2023 release.
Diblasi co-wrote the upcoming film with Scott Poiley, and it sounds like it will be a much bigger, bloodier affair.

"A mind is a terrible thing to break." Dread Central Presents has released the official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Extremity, the latest feature from director Anthony Diblasi. Extremity plays with the popular modern horror concept of "extreme haunts", or experiences horror fans can pay for that put them in horrific, torturous situations. The plot follows a young woman obsessed with horror who subjects herself to hours of grueling torment inside an extreme haunt in an attempt to confront her fears and conquer the tragic past that haunts her. Starring Dana Christina, J. Larose, Cam Damage, September D'Angelo, Felissa Rose, Tiffany Shepis, Chad Rook, Michael St. Michaels, Natalie Victoria, and Ricky Dean Logan. I wasn't even sure if I should post this, but it just looks so crazy with some seriously freaky imagery, I couldn't help it. You hve to see all this for yourself. Here's the first...

Horror is at its best when there isn’t a focus on over doing special effects to try to shock the audience. If a film can make use of its location, add in some lighting and create a feeling of claustrophobia then it can create scares better than any computer can. This is the strength of Last Shift.
Jessica Loren’s (Juliana Harkavy) first shit as a police officer is to stay in a closing police station alone until the hazmat team to come pick-up some bio-hazardous waste still left in the armoury. Meant to be the only person left in the station it’s not long before she finds herself haunted by both the living and the dead.
Last Shift is smart because it builds atmosphere before the horror is brought in.

Tagline: "Fear the ones left behind." Last Shift is a horror film from Skyra Entertainment. The film, previously titled Paymon, involves a late shift and a haunted police station. The film stars Juliana Harkavy, Joshua Mikel, J. Larose and Natalie Victoria. The first movie poster for the Last Shift is hosted here. The graphic shows the supernatural forces, housed with the film. Focusing on a now deceased cult and following, the film brings several maniacal characters back from the grave. However, a trailer is sure to come this way, shortly. Actress Juliana Harkavy is pictured here. Release Date: Tba. Director: Anthony Diblasi. This title was released earlier in the year (Oct. 14th, 2014), through Lions Gate Entertainment. A film about a toxic chemical spill, Chemical Peel spends most of its ninety-five minute runtime with bickering characters. Several so-called friends, at a bachelorette party, are more toxic than the mist outside. Shot almost entirely inside one location, the film is an exercise in what not to do in a catastrophe. Characters act in cowardly and idiotic ways, which makes Chemical Peel a difficult watch. A group of girls gather for a night of drinking and celebrating. Fifteen minutes into the story, it is finally revealed that the girls have come together.

It seemed rather fitting that we hit the set of writer, director and producer Thomas J. Churchill’s ambitious zombie feature Lazarus on Easter Sunday, and we’re glad we did.
Battling the throngs of Sunday worshippers who’d clogged Los Angeles’ concrete arteries for Hollywood Bowl’s Easter Mass, we made our way to Tarzana, CA, where filmmaker Churchill had set up shop at Waggin’ Tails Lounge, a dog grooming facility owned by his cousin, Kathie Fiorillo. Shooting day twelve of thirteen on the Canon 5D, Churchill was prepping a scene which would feature the re-animation of the dead, and while it may be poised to enter the already bloated sub-genre of independent zombie cinema, readers, do please take note: Lazarus seems to be hell-bent on offering an entirely fresh take.

It seems like a lot of young folk are heading out into the bush only to find terror this week. A night of drinking and story telling turns to tragedy. This time, the characters are a group of women out on a stagette. In Chemical Peel, these friends find themselves caught in a biological hazard, when a train derails nearby.
