Cynthia Erivo Responds to Harriet Tubman Casting Backlash: ‘I Cannot Tell How Protective I Am of This Woman’

Cynthia Erivo Responds to Harriet Tubman Casting Backlash: ‘I Cannot Tell How Protective I Am of This Woman’
Rumors of a Harriet Tubman biopic have persisted for years — in 2015, Viola Davis was reportedly set to produce and star in a feature about the seminal civil rights crusader — and the dearly departed Wgn America series “Underground” included a major plot centered on Tubman, as played by Aisha Hinds, but the news that Focus Features is set to start production on their very own “Harriet” still came as a bit of a surprise when it was announced last week. While it was initially announced that Tony-winning actress Cynthia Erivo (who is just one Oscar away from joining the ranks of fellow Egot recipients) was set to star as Tubman last year, that incarnation was an “independent” feature set to be helmed by Seith Mann.

On Thursday, the project got a major boost, when Focus Features announced that their “Harriet” was now set to be directed by “Eve’s Bayou” helmer

Cynthia Erivo will play Harriet Tubman

by Murtada Elfadl

Cynthia Erivo who made waves this week at Tiff as one quarter of Widows has announced her next project. She will play iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman in Harriet. The film will follow Tubman on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free many slaves through the Underground Railroad in pre-Civil War America. More exciting is that Harriet will be directed by Kasi Lemmons of Eve’s Bayou (1997), a film we adore. This will be Lemmons' first film since Black Nativity (2013), in the past few years she’s been directing episodes of TV shows like Luke Cage and Shots Fired.

Joining Erivo in the cast are Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Clarke Peters (Detective Freamon in The Wire) and surprisingly country music singer Jennifer Nettles.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ season 27 cast wish list: ‘DWTS’ should consider Vanessa Williams, Auli’i Cravalho and more

ABC recently announced that the 27th season of the competitive-dancing reality show “Dancing with the Stars” is set to premiere on September 24. But which celebs will enter the ballroom? Below is a list of female candidates I think “DWTS” should consider inviting to compete for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know who you’d like to see on the show.

Ciara

Grammy-winning singer Ciara is best known for her infectious hits like “1,2 Step,” “Promise” and “Goodies,” but she has yet to grace the ballroom. Her sensual and hard-hitting moves would make her an instant front-runner along the lines of past musician contestants like Mya (season 9 runner-up), Nicole Scherzinger (season 10 Champion), Brandy (season 11) and Normani Kordei (season 24 finalist). Note to the casting directors: watch her “In My Feelings” dance challenge video and go ahead and give her a call.

Taylor Swift Plays a Homewrecking Redhead in Sugarland’s ‘Mad Men’-Inspired ‘Babe’ Video
Taylor Swift takes another shot at her wholesome image in the new video Sugarland’s single “Babe,” playing a red-headed secretary who is having an affair with her married boss. Swift not only co-wrote the song, but the “Mad Men”-inspired video, based in the early 1960s and featuring sumptuous period detail, was based on her concept, the group’s Jennifer Nettles said.

“She actually reached out to us and said, ‘I’ve got a great idea for the video,’ and she wrote the treatment,” Nettles, told People last week.

Actor Brandon Roth plays the man, and Nettles turns in a memorable performance as the martini-swilling but vengeful wife.

“She loves this song,” said Nettles. “She loves our recording of it. She’s been such a champion of ours, not only for many, many years, but also where this project is concerned. She’s just super excited that we’re doing it.

How Canada’s ‘The Launch’ Is Retuning the Reality Singing Competition Formula
The Launch,” Big Machine Records President/CEO Scott Borchetta’s singing competition on Canadian Television (CTV), is getting a second season, having landed an exclusive worldwide distribution deal with Sony Pictures Television (Spt). The show is set to begin filming in Toronto this coming Fall for the 2018-19 season.

After just one season on the air, the show has seen success from its graduates the likes of which most reality competition shows strive for: six of the series’ singles have seen major traction, including four No. 1 songs on iTunes Canada: Poesy’s “Soldier of Love,” Logan Staats’ “The Lucky Ones,” Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine’s “Ain’t Easy,” which was recently certified platinum, and The Static Shift’s “Wide Awake.”

That success, Borchetta tells Variety, is validation that “we might really have something here.”

The idea for “The Launch” came to Borchetta shortly after completing his final season as

While some country music fans feared they would never see the duo making new music together again, they were proven wrong. Not only is Sugarland releasing a new album, but they also have a brand-new tour kicking off tonight at the Choctaw Grand Theater in Oklahoma.
