So, will Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. Loosely based on the Douglas Adams novels, the Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency TV show stars Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, Jade Eshete, Hannah Marks, Mpho Koaho, Fiona Dourif, Dustin Milligan, John Hannah, Amanda Walsh, Michael Eklund, Osric Chau, Viv Leacock, Zak Santiago, Tyler Labine, Izzie Steele, Alan Tudyk, Alexia Fast, Agam Darshi, and Aleks Paunovic. The first trailer for ‘Manhattan’ Season Two deals with secrets

Wgn America’s nuclear bomb development period drama Manhattan is poised to return for a second season later this year with some major new additions to the cast.

Created by Masters of Sex scribe Sam Shaw, the show’s second season now has its first trailer. Manhattan’s second season will see John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, and Alexia Fast joined by William Petersen and Neve Campbell.

The show is set in 1943 and is a dramatised version of the goings-on of The Manhattan Project, real-life experiment by the Us government where the country’s top scientists were quarantined in a desert facility in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and tasked with making feasible a nuclear bomb to use in the then-ongoing World War II.

The trailer itself steers clear of the science behind the bomb, focusing instead on the toll the project is taking on the individuals and their relationships, while

‘Grace: The Possession’ Review

Stars: Alexia Fast, Lin Shaye, Alan Dale, Joel David Moore, Alexis Knapp, Clarke Peters | Written by Jeff Chan, Chris Pare | Directed by Jeff Chan

Grace (Fast) is a beautiful, naive, virginal college freshman trying to deal with campus culture and her outgoing new roommate. But when a terror takes over her body and unleashes chaos, Grace returns to the cold clutches of her severe grandmother (Shaye). Haunted by the horrific death of her mother and her deeply ingrained destructive urges, Grace must stop the demon inside before it’s too late.

Wow. Could that synopsis be any more generic? In fact everything about the marketing of Grace: The Possession is so generic you’d be forgiven for thinking this is yet another Exorcist knock-off. Or, as the copy on the front of the DVD would have you believe, the latest in the long line of spooky horrors churned out by Blumhouse Productions,

DVD Review – Grace: The Possession (2014)

Grace: The Possession, 2014.

Directed by Jeff Chan.

Starring Alexia Fast, Lin Shaye, Alan Dale, Brett Dier, Joel David Moore and Alexis Knapp.

A virginal Catholic teenager leaves her religious grandmother’s house to go to college and soon finds that drink and drugs are the least of her worries.

The trouble with making a possession film in the 21st century is that it has been done quite definitively already. The Exorcist pretty much covered all the bases back in 1973, and although there have been some entertaining knock-offs since then – Amityville II: The Possession basically re-told the same story but with the touch of Dino De Laurentiis adding some unintentional quasi-comic hilarity – and a bit of a re-invention with the likes of The Last Exorcism adding a found footage spin on things, you’ve really got to work hard these days to make a movie about possession stand out.

What the movies teach us about possession

As Deliver Us From Evil lands on disc in the UK, we look back at key lessons the movies teach us about possession...

The idea of demonic possession goes back thousands of years, to before we had film. Most religions carry their own interpretation of what it means for a person to be 'possessed' by a demon or a spirit and it's a complicated, arcane subject shrouded in mystery and ritual.

The Sumerians, thousands of years before Christ, believed all diseases were caused by 'sickness demons' and had their sorcerers attempt early exorcisms as cures. The Quran talks extensively of Jinn (demons) that can drive people to insanity and may only be expelled via worship. In the Bible, Satan and his demons are very much at large using human beings as vessels for devilish deeds. Jesus casts a whole bunch of them out before he's accused of being demon-possessed himself

Changing reality, part 2 by Anne-Katrin Titze

Director Atom Egoyan on The Captive in New York: "This is the most challenging and something I've explored in The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica…" Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

We speak about Wolfgang Staudte's Murderers Are Among Us, the blurring of parameters, Bruce Greenwood's Vince at the charity ball, the upcoming Remember with Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau, Bruno Ganz and Dean Norris and Die Walküre.

Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos give fervent performances of grief as Matthew and Tina, whose daughter Cass, played as an ice-skating, pie-loving, energetic young girl by Peyton Kennedy, goes missing. For eight years, aided by a Niagara team of detectives, headed by Rosario Dawson's Nicole Dunlop and Scott Speedman's Jeffrey Cornwall, they search for the missing child. The viewer knows her whereabouts in the clutches of Kevin Durand's Mika, a man in their midst, who comes up with new bristling storytelling functions

Scott Speedman Talks The Captive, His Complicated Character, the Backstory He Created, Upcoming Projects, and More

Scott Speedman enjoys portraying flawed men who are pushed to the limit, make mistakes, and then have to recover, and his character in Atom Egoyan’s new psychological thriller, The Captive, definitely fits the bill. Speedman plays Detective Jeffrey Cornwall, an edgy cop who makes a living hooking predators and searching for missing children online. He’s immediately skeptical of Matthew Lane’s (Ryan Reynolds) story about his missing daughter (Alexia Fast), and his suspicions that the father is somehow complicit in the abduction lead him to push way beyond the ethical boundaries of his work. Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Durand and Bruce Greenwood also co-star. At the film’s recent press day, Speedman spoke about his creative collaboration with Egoyan with whom he worked previously on Adoration, how Egoyan wrote the role specifically with him in mind, why he was drawn to the complicated character and enjoyed the challenge of an enigmatic story,

Changing reality, part 1 by Anne-Katrin Titze

The Captive director Atom Egoyan with Anne-Katrin Titze in New York Photo: Nina Baron

Atom Egoyan's intense abduction thriller The Captive, starring Ryan Reynolds, Rosario Dawson, Scott Speedman and Mireille Enos with Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast and Bruce Greenwood, takes us to a wintry Niagara Falls and into the clutches of a hellish circle of internet predators. A house straight out of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest turns out to be Marquis de Sade's chateau with Mozart's Magic Flute filling the icy air.

At the Crosby Street Hotel, I started with greetings from Alessandro Nivola, who is starring on Broadway with Bradley Cooper and Patricia Clarkson in The Elephant Man. Atom and I went on to discuss the link to The Sweet Hereafter, fairy tales, Greek mythology, Cornwall and shifting perception, and ended up at Die Walküre and Remember.

Kevin Durand as Mika: "There's a charge, there's
