Julian Epstein was born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, on February 18, 1924. He studied composition with Paul Hindemith, Otto Luening and Nadia Boulanger. While an undergraduate at Yale, he was drafted into the US Army toward the end of WW II and played clarinet in a marching band.
