In the series finale of Physical, lead character Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) takes a look at herself in the mirror and notices a pimple along her laugh line. Her natural inclination is to pop the blemish, but upon leaning in and examining the spot more closely, she decides to leave it be. The scene in the episode titled “Lucky Star” is a nod to the series premiere, “Let’s Do This Thing,” which debuted on June 18, 2021, and introduced Sheila in a similar vein along with the inner voice that would threaten to be her undoing over the next three seasons.
“It’s a small thing, but when she looks at herself in the mirror at the beginning, there’s so much beauty, yet all she sees is ugliness and darkness,” series creator Annie Weisman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “At the end of the season when she looks at herself in the mirror,...

The final scene of the Apple TV+ drama Physical shows Sheila joining Bunny's aerobics class. The show often blurs the line between reality and Sheila's imagination, leaving some viewers wondering if the reconciliation is real or not. According to creator Annie Weisman, the reconciliation between Sheila and Bunny did occur, but the scene transitions into a more symbolic and metaphorical memory space as Sheila and Bunny dance together.

[This story contains spoilers to the series finale of Physical.]
Across three seasons, Rose Byrne has seen her Physical alter ego Sheila Rubin finally achieve self-discovery and self-acceptance through aerobics, having been drawn initially to the exercise as she struggled with an eating disorder and what very well may be some of the most negative self-talk anyone has experienced — at least on television. From the moment viewers were introduced to Sheila in Apple TV+’s dark comedy, she was also joined by the protagonist’s biting and destructive inner voice that seemingly would stop at nothing to keep Sheila from achieving any sort of happiness within her struggling marriage to Danny (Rory Scovel), her extramarital affair with a Morman businessman (Paul Sparks) and her professional partnership with exercise entrepreneurs Bunny (Delia Saba) and Greta (Dierdre Friel).

Physical ended right where it began.
In the opening moments of Wednesday’s series finale, the action jumped from 1983 to 1986, mirroring the fleeting flash-forward that kicked off the dark comedy’s pilot. In the intervening three years, Sheila (Rose Byrne) and Greta (Dierdre Friel) have fulfilled their ambitious vision of turning Body By Sheila into the female-driven multi-million dollar, 50-state franchise that is Strength By Numbers. But professional success has come at a price for Sheila: She’s lonely. What’s more, her mental issues remain ever-present. [Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 4 of “Physical.”]
No one, not show creator Annie Weisman nor longtime director Stephanie Laing, knew that Kelly Kilmartin would have a Southern accent until Zooey Deschanel showed up for Season 3 of Apple TV+’s “Physical.”
Deschanel’s sitcom star and rising fitness guru Kelly (glimpsed in the Season 2 finale) assumes the role of Sheila’s vicious inner voice for the final season, as Sheila comes ever closer to her dream of an aerobics empire in ’80s San Diego. And while audiences watched star Rose Byrne neg herself for two seasons in voiceover, now Byrne’s Sheila is reacting in real-time to what Kelly has to say — and none of it kind.
“We always wanted Zooey, and when she said yes, we were thrilled, but we never really talked about what she sounded like,” Laing told IndieWire. “When Zooey tried out that accent, Annie and I were like, ‘That is incredible. Please,...

The final season of Physical is ambitious and just as darkly delicious as ever, giving fans of the show a sense of closure. The introduction of Zooey Deschanel as a guest star adds an interesting dynamic to Sheila's story, showing her evolution as a character. While the final season wraps things up satisfactorily, there are some rushed plot points and loose ends that could have been better executed.

At first glance, the final season of the hit dark comedy from creator Annie Weisman and executive producer/star Rose Byrne appears to be the best one of all. Season three drops on Wednesday, Aug. 2, on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes of a 10-episode season that director/executive producer Stephanie Laing calls “bigger and bolder than seasons one and two.” New episodes drop weekly, every Wednesday through Sept. 27.

The end of Physical will be here before we know it.
Apple TV+ went public with the key art and trailer for Physical Season 3 on Wednesday, and we have plenty of questions.
The trailer welcomes Zooey Deschanel to the cast as Kelly Kilmartin, and it's clear from the get-go that Rose Byrne's Sheila is not destined to be BFFs with her -- far from it, actually.

The third and final season of “Physical” will introduce a new competitor to Rose Byrne’s Sheila Rubin.
Just as the dark voices in her head have silenced as Sheila commits to her wellness journey and builds a television fitness empire, a new opponent arises for the entrepreneur in a rising exercise celebrity, played by Zooey Deschanel.
“You are a national television personality now,” Greta tells Sheila in the trailer. “We are on the precipice of something big, there’s just one problem: Kelly Kilmartin … she’s the most famous fitness star.”
Doubt immediately begins to creep into Sheila’s mind, manifesting itself as an imaginary Kelly (Deschanel), who taunts Sheila by saying, “I’m better than you” and “you’re just hanging on by a thread, just waiting for that moment to snap.”

"I'm trying to save him from a lifetime of humiliation!" Roadside Attractions has unveiled an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Somewhere in Queens, marking the directorial debut of comedian / actor Ray Romano. This first premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and recently played at the 2023 Palm Springs Film Festival in January this year. It's another of these generic life-as-a-family indies that are dropping all over the VOD channels recently. Leo and Angela Russo live a simple life in Queens, surrounded by their overbearing Italian-American family. When their son "Sticks" finds success as a player on the high school basketball team, Leo tears the family apart trying to make it happen for him. Ray Romano directs and co-stars, with Laurie Metcalf as his wife, Jacob Ward as their son, plus Tony Lo Bianco, Sebastian Maniscalco, Jennifer Esposito, Sadie Stanley, Dierdre Friel, and Jon Manfrellotti. Versailles Palace — not the historic residence near Paris — is one of those places. You know, a bedazzled hall for rent for the celebration of weddings, confirmations and whatever rite of passage requires dinner and a DJ. For the Italian American New Yorkers in Somewhere in Queens, it’s not just a venue but a way of life, both a necessary communal stomping ground and an affectionate running joke. As its title suggests, the movie embraces generic types, but smart writing, unforced direction and a superb cast give the sentimental-but-not-gushy comic drama the messy specifics and narrative friction to lift it well beyond been-there-done-that.
Working from a screenplay he wrote with Mark Stegemann, Ray Romano helms his first feature with assurance, concerned not with stamping the material with capital-c cinematic style but with capturing its essence, drawing ace performances from seasoned pros and newcomers alike.

Tribeca is back and looking almost like it did before Covid hit the scene and upended film festivals around the world.
The 2022 edition will have indoor screenings, something that last year’s all-outdoor version eschewed. It will also offer up a steady stream of splashy premieres, performances, concerts and talks featuring A-listers such as Jennifer Lopez, as well as new offerings from the likes of Jon Hamm, Jessica Chastain, Ray Romano, Bryan Cranston and more. That’s the kind of sizzle that New York City could use as it tries to regain its stride after coronavirus knocked it for a loop.
But some pandemic-era innovations remain. Film lovers who still prefer to avoid crowds during Covid can access many of the movies and events digitally with the Tribeca At Home platform, a sign that going forward festivals are going to continue embracing a hybrid model.

There are big changes coming in Season 2 of Physical, the dark comedy set in the sunny fitness scene of 1980s Southern California. Aerobics teacher Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) is transforming from frustrated housewife to independent businesswoman after successfully launching her first workout video. “It has really opened up the show. It’s not just about Sheila’s inner demons. It’s about the external battle she has around her,” Byrne says. The first season focused heavily on Sheila’s eating disorder and poor self-image, the result of childhood trauma. Now, she’s working with her onetime nemesis, Greta (Dierdre Friel) to build an empire. A new rival: health/weight loss guru Vinnie Green. “There’s a competitive edge in the way they come together, but they quickly realize they’re twin spirits in a way in terms of what they are presenting to the outside world and what they have going on inside,...

Last year, Apple TV+ debuted the first season of the Rose Byrne-starring drama, “Physical,” about San Diego mother Sheila Rubin (Byrne) and her desire to build an aerobics empire in the 1980s. The series had many of ’80s-set show staples, including a colorful wardrobe. Alongside that, it was a personal story for series creator Annie Weisman, who felt that San Diego and the ’80s were often portrayed as idyllic places which she wanted to subvert. The first season received mixed reviews from critics, with several pointing out that Sheila’s voice-over narration, coupled with her character’s eating disorder, were anxiety-inducing and indulging in disordered eating stereotypes.
Season 2 feels like a course correction with a desire to embrace the “autonomy” Weisman found interesting about women and aerobics in the 1980s. Sheila is working to tailor herself into a lifestyle brand, but everyone else in her orbit is working on themselves,...
