Robert Redford is ready to give directing another shot (no pun intended) with a film that revolves around the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Variety reports that James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn have signed on to star in the film.
The Conspirator tells the story of alleged conspirator Mary Surratt (Penn), the lone woman in the group charged with conspiring to kill Lincoln. Surratt’s attorney, Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), reluctantly defends her and eventually grows to believe she’s innocent.
The film will be the first financed by the American Film Co. headed by Joe Ricketts. The company was formed with the goal of creating historically accurate American stories. To help achieve this goal, Lincoln assassination experts Thomas Turner and Us Army regimental historian Col. Fred Borch will be advisers on the project.

Back when the first mention of Robert Redford's The Conspirator movie was mentioned, casting James McAvoy was just an idea that the director had in his mind. Today Variety is reporting that the Wanted star is signed in the drama where he'll play a Civil War hero who comes to defend the woman accused of conspiring to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
Redford has also cast Robin Wright Penn in the part of Mary Surratt, the defendant in the trial. Shooting is slated to begin next month from a screenplay by James Solomon.
The film is being bankrolled by American Film Company, a company that was founded by stock market biz man Joe Ricketts to finance movies that tell lesser known events from American history. "Stories from our history are often more compelling than fiction," Ricketts said. "Mary Surratt's trial is a powerful, relevant story."

James McAvoy has signed on for The Conspirator; Robert Redford's true-life historical drama about the events following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Robin Wright Penn will be co-starring.The script is by James Solomon, who also wrote Redford's Lions For Lambs. McAvoy will play Frederick Aiken, the lawyer defending Penn's Mary Surratt in the wake of the assassination. Surratt was the only woman charged among the conspirators, and was the first woman to be executed by the United States Federal Government, in 1865. Her trial was somewhat irregular as she was a civilian convicted by miltary tribunal. There's a school of thought that her major "crime" was to be the mother of the conspirator John Surratt, and that her arrest was designed to flush him out of hiding.Variety reports that this is the first film to come under the banner of entrepreneur Joe Ricketts' American Film Co: formed...
